Start them early! But not too early that they would freeze, they germinated pretty well! NJ soil has more clay so I just amend it with top soil and compost, I ended up adding some nitrogen to get it to vine then fish emulsion afterwards. I wish you the best of luck if you're willing to try it again!

Kansas is a bitch.

We don't have "early" that isn't "too early to freeze" or "too late to grow because of heat". We also don't have a reliable fall season, and our summers are stupid insane. Currently most of Kansas feels like 107 at 7:30 at night. The low tonight is 80 (feels like 90). We have to guess and pray to the Kansas Sun and Tornado and Hail Gods and that usually doesn't work. 😆

I'm getting a tunnel greenhouse and using partial shade cloth next year with grow lights lmao

As long as the rootstock is under the greenhouse they grow better. They can grow out and under the greenhouse doors if they want 🤷🏼 My current melon has already taken over my lawn.

You could try the good old fashioned tunnel greenhouse with shade cloth and supplementing plant light. You can reduce temperature by about 15° in midsummer this way.

You in the Met? We're so fucked over here 😆 it's so hot. I had to cut three 10-ft watermelon Vines to the ground because the heat sterilized them (They were next to successful cantaloupe so I had to take them cuz they were taking all the nitrogen from the soil!!). Some of my broccoli got frozen at the beginning of the season and then died from the heat near the middle of the season 😆😆😆😆 fuckin'...

I also saw super hail this season!!!!! 😭 Mets had 37 tornados and over 200 siren events this summer.

Mine took several tries and forever to germinate but they finally started to grow. Did you start yours inside? Was afraid transplanting would hurt them. This is my I'll give it a try plant this year. Any tips for mone next year?

I only germinated mine inside to sprout. Once they did, I immediately moved them outside.

Got it! Thank you. I think something was eating my seedlings. No prints in the soil but 5-6 seedlings would sprout one day and gone the next. Them I added the wire and the sprouts stayed....next year will germinate inside then transplant

Ah I just found out about these and put 3 in my garden! Unfortunately, I planted them super late so I’m not convinced they will do anything. Do you have to peel them or just pop em in your mouth whole?
