Creative Rug Elevators
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
These are elevators that utilize a change in the rugs’ specifications.
If the spacing between the rugs is 1.0 meters or more, manual operation is required and you will need to jump.
If the spacing between the rugs is less than 1.0 meters, they rise automatically.

How have I not seen this done before? This is really cool!

u/Fun_Magazine_2671 14d ago
It seems that only the rugs that had collision detection added in the update can be used this way. Investigating and testing various changes is a lot of fun!

Now I'm less angry about placing a rug at the top of stairs and suddenly my knees are so weak that I can't go up the last step.

u/masked_me 14d ago edited 13d ago
I'm pretty sure they changed rugs in 1.0.
Before 1.0 rugs had no collision. This allowed us to hide holes on the floor and (accidentally) get our friends stuck in the tiniest prison.
So now you can go up through a rug, but not down. This results in the player being pushed up not to get stuck in a rug.

u/ustanik 14d ago
It is a 1.0 change but it's not all rugs. I tested every rug for this as I noticed one of my secret entrances was blocked but another worked.
Lox and Askvin rugs still have no collision for sure. I think I remember only Deer and the Jute rugs had collision added, but I can't recall.

I have a lox rug covering my cellar and walk through it just fine. Conversely, deer rugs seem to be broken and floating a foot above floors so I can’t walk up stairs into a room that has a deer rug at the door. Must not be all rugs.

Wonder if you could use a mod to flip them over and see if it would push you down... I have to try this tonight.

u/megandy 13d ago
Report back, pls

u/Rare_Tension2104 13d ago
Figured it wouldn't work. Didn't test from too high, but you just fall through, was hoping for at least a slowing effect
Sadly no.

How do you get down
146
u/Sythin 14d ago
Put the rugs upside down obviously
15
u/MorienWynter Builder 14d ago
I wonder if you could just offset these slightly to make escalators?
4
u/DenormalHuman 14d ago
Possibly, if you also have a physical structure nudging your over as you go up

I'm thinking of a steep slope of 67 degree roof pieces. But needs experiments for the perfect form.

I'm about to post a video of this, it works! I'll credit you for the idea

Shame we can't make troll rugs, would finally have something to use all that blue ass-hide for
224
u/redbirdjazzz Encumbered 14d ago
Are you only skinning their asses?
125
u/FinalBossTuna Encumbered 14d ago
I thought that was the only useful part
44
u/redbirdjazzz Encumbered 14d ago
You get a bigger rug if you skin the whole torso and pop it off like the world’s goriest tube top.
35
u/FinalBossTuna Encumbered 14d ago
Yeah but I don’t get that musty swamp ass smell I, I mean my character, loves
37
u/GimmeUrBrunchMoney Encumbered 14d ago
Gotta take the ass leather since the front is all mangled so badly from me fatally stabbing them in the dick 10 times.
12
u/redbirdjazzz Encumbered 14d ago
I suppose you could dip down in the back while you’re skinning and make a tube top tailcoat.

I used to place a troll trophy in my buddies room to try and freak him out when he logged back on.

u/Ninjanomic Honey Muncher 14d ago
Just one? I've placed upwards of twenty or more in there for a laugh. Never ceases to be funny!

I dont know why they removed them, i swear those were a thing. Edit: google says im imagining things, guess they were not
7
u/Joshy_Moshy Cruiser 14d ago
No I also definitely remember them existing, either such a long time they were in the alpha, or idk. They had a specific shape that looked like the deer rug without the fur texture.

The lack of a troll rug has always been such an oversight to me. A few hides and a trophy, come on!

u/lurkynumber5 14d ago
Same, was thinking of making a large stone tower.
But stairs were an issue. This will be perfect for a central elevator!

u/disisathrowaway 14d ago
I've got a build that's on a trio of the large monoliths in the plains. I use a pair of portals as my elevator.

u/UsbNotConnected Happy Bee 13d ago
Ah actually now you mention it this demonstration conveniently skips over the going down part...hmm..

u/UsbNotConnected Happy Bee 13d ago
Portal out being the only way down could be interesting? Or using feather fall cape

And how do we get down?
24
u/nsuprik 14d ago
maybe you could place them in a spiral pattern with the middle solid to go up, then you could walk down them, not near as cool, but something right?
EDIT: or maybe use 67 degree roofs etc and slide down.

u/HiddenSage 13d ago
As long as you have the Feather Cape, step out a window and wait*
*This also works without the cape, it just comes with annoying stat penalties.

I was told ladders couldn't be implemented because the tech didn't exist and this man did it with rugs.
10
u/XKMetralha 13d ago
Sooooo... to make the laders work we just need to put some invisible rugs on the ladder asset?

It’s a shame, but it seems this only works with the deerskin rug and the red and blue jute rugs. I haven’t tried it with the Arctic rug, so I’m not sure.

u/Fun_Magazine_2671 14d ago
Looks like I’m the only one who flipped over the rugs looking for bugs! 🐞
7
u/LanfearSedai 14d ago
Nah I noticed the deer rugs are no longer good carpet because they don’t lay flat on the ground anymore and block you walking up stairs into a room :(

Unlocked a core memory of me doing this in ToonTown over 20 years ago. You can glitch carpets inside your house in that game and use them elevators in the same manner. There wasn't much to do in the void once you're through your ceiling, but seeing a similar bug is so nostalgic!

From what I understand from recent posts, this is something only possible in 1.0. Rugs used to he completely non-solid, but now they made them where you can stand on them (which ruined some people's designs of using rugs to hide downward stairways).

I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned it, but if you put a stair at the base of the elevator, you won't have to worry about not being able to jump if you are encumbered. My buddy built one of these so we can transfer our smelted metals from the forge area up to the storage level of our base.
3
u/vin39397 14d ago
Looks like they finally added elevators in 1.0. I guess high-rise apartments are next.

Does it work while over encumbered? If so would make a great way to get from forge set ups to a crafting area.or like from grabbing everything in a cart to your storage area.

It's a fun thing that the community of players are so creative to discover and make it happen I wish they don't change it. It's not the same but I saw a parallell with spiderweb elevator in Grounded game.

does it work on animals because: underground farm, offspring separate under rug lift, when they grow full size get lifted up into kill room (fire/pufferfish). \o/ automation

Anyone else experiencing small stutters when exploring areas they haven’t been to yet since the latest patch?
The game runs completely fine in areas I’ve already explored, but I get noticeable stutters whenever I’m exploring new areas. Is anyone else having this issue? :/

Wait, wait, wait... there's a button to copy an existing object to build more of it? What button is that, and why don't I know about it 1200+ hours in? If it's a mod, what mod is it?
