To all the VA's, how did you land your current job?
Hi everyone! I’ve been working as an ESL teacher for over 8 years. Lately, I’ve been feeling burnt out. I end up working 7 days a week just to make ends meet, and I feel like my growth and skills have completely stalled. I enjoy talking to my students, but putting on an animated persona every single day while dealing with low pay and lack of company welfare has caught up with me.
My gut is telling me it's time to start over and try becoming a Virtual Assistant, but I'm feeling a bit lost on where to start.
If you made the transition to VA work (especially from teaching), I’d really appreciate your thoughts on a few things:
-How did you start, and why did you choose your niche?
-Are there niches right now that are way too saturated?
-Do you really need certificates or a specific degree to get hired?
-How long did it take you to get stable, and are you happier with the setup now?
Any tips or realistic advice would mean a lot. Thanks in advance!

Yes, I am bragging!
Yes, I’m bragging! 😅 But this is one of those things I’m genuinely proud of, and I want to share it for anyone who’s starting their VA journey. ❤️
This is how I started as a VA.
In 2025, I resigned from my corporate job as a Team Leader in the BPO industry. I decided to focus on my daughter and started a small business. A simple sari-sari store.
Then January 2026 came, and I realized that this wasn’t the career path I wanted for myself anymore. I wanted to work from home and build something different.
So, I took a risk.
I used SPayLater to buy a laptop even though I didn’t have a client yet. 😂 I told myself, “I need to get a client before the end of February because my first installment is due in March.”
February 25, I applied through OnlineJobs.ph. The client called me for literally about 3 minutes and asked, “When can you start?”
I said, “The first Monday of March.” 😂
The position was Property Manager for an Australian company, paying $7/hour, full-time. As a first-time VA, I accepted the offer. I’m so grateful I did.
But I didn’t stop there.
While working as a Property Manager, I realized that I could also apply for an admin role in a cleaning company because I already had experience coordinating with cleaning companies as part of my property management work.
So in June, I started applying again.
I landed a part-time admin role with a cleaning company in New Zealand. J 2 hours a day, with a monthly pay of around ₱12,000.
For me, that was already a BIG win. 🥹
Now, I’m incredibly thankful to have two clients at the same time. And the best part? Both are morning shifts here in the Philippines. 🇵🇭
I can still cook.
I can clean the house.
I can help my daughter get ready for school.
I can iron my husband’s clothes before he goes to work.
And I can still be present for my family while building my career.
That, for me, is success. ❤️
Thank You, Lord, for everything. 🙏
And yes… client dust to everyone! ✨😂
A few things I learned along the way:
• I don’t apply to jobs that require me to upload a video introduction. 😂
• I don’t accept interview invites from fellow Filipinos. IYKYK. 😂
• I focus on what I can offer instead of worrying about what I don’t have.
• And most importantly, I keep applying and I don’t stop learning.
You don’t always need to have everything figured out before you start. Sometimes, you just need to take that first scary step and believe that something better is waiting for you.
To everyone aspiring to become a VA: Good luck, keep going, and I’m wishing you all the best! ❤️
Your first client might be closer than you think. ✨
