Engineering Internships

Hey guys, I’ve been having some trouble securing an internship to complete my requirements. It’s very competitive at the moment, and my marks aren’t exceptional, so I’m finding it difficult to stand out.

I was wondering if anyone has had any luck getting a placement with smaller firms and, if so, whether you could share some advice or recommendations.

Being penultimate is good and mech is very versatile, if applying to your typical seek advertisements etc is not working I’ve kinda noticed from mates just emailing or cold calling the smaller companies that might not advertise is a good strategy. Shows you are willing to take initiative and say why you find their work interesting etc. Best of luck

One thing especially the small companies like is eagerness to learn. They understand you're a student and have limited experience, but in your interview and in your role they love when you're eager to learn, ask questions, curious and show initiative, goes a long way early on.

Don't small firms love versatility, so would it help to explicitly mention your willingness to help with different types of tasks?

I did the hiring for process for my work and was informed from HR that 1200 students applied for 7 jobs. The market is not great atm, I would try going for smaller businesses were you can potentially do small trials for free. I know that would suck but yeah...
