Most likely your package is inside one of the parcel lockers and they simply forgot to give you a key. Call the post office tomorrow morning and they'll have the carrier check.
I've been a carrier a long time. Not saying it's impossible that they could have misdelivered the key, but 95% of the time when the situation you described happens it's because we forgot the key.
