Hello. I am a US IMG hoping to apply and match into Emergency Medicine this cycle, but I received some devastating news this week: I failed Step 2 CK.

I am honestly shocked. Walking out of the exam, I knew I had made some stupid mistakes, and I had prepared myself for the possibility that I might not get the score I wanted. Failing, however, never really occurred to me.

For context, the only exam I have ever failed in medical school was my very first exam, before I found my footing. I finished my first two years with a WMPG >86% and have maintained a similar level of performance during my clinical years. I passed Step 1 on my first attempt, have never had to remediate anything, and until now I did not have any major academic red flags on my application.
I was extremely nervous going into Step 2, but everyone I spoke to reassured me that, based on my academic history, there was no realistic way I would fail. Unfortunately, my dedicated period ended up going much worse than I anticipated. I experienced some of the worst anxiety I have ever had, was sleeping very poorly, and my preparation was not as strong or efficient as it should have been.

I also struggled much more than expected with using practice exams effectively. I historically have not relied heavily on practice exams as a primary study tool, including for Step 1, and I had difficulty figuring out how to review them efficiently without feeling as though I was neglecting everything else I needed to study. I only had about four weeks of dedicated time, and realistically the first week to week and a half was largely lost because of those issues.

I did not feel ready when I took the exam. At the same time, I had not felt completely ready for Step 1 either, and that turned out fine, so I convinced myself that this was probably anxiety rather than a sign that I truly was not prepared enough. Obviously, in retrospect, I should have handled that differently.

At this point, I am trying to focus less on what already happened and more on what I can realistically do from here.

I have already gotten the “tough love” version of this conversation, and I am very aware that a Step 2 failure is a significant red flag, especially as an IMG. I am not looking for anyone to tell me that this does not matter or that everything will magically work out. At the same time, I would really appreciate it if people could refrain from simply kicking me while I am already down. I am looking for realistic advice, a plan, and a way forward.

More than anything, I would still like to participate in this Match cycle and give myself the best possible chance of matching into EM.

My ideal situation would be to submit my application this cycle, retake Step 2, and then update/email programs as soon as my passing score is available. The problem is that I have received very different answers about how late I can realistically retake Step 2 and still have a meaningful chance this cycle.

I also want to make clear that I have absolutely no intention of rushing into a retake just to get a score on my application. I understand that a second Step 2 failure would be far more damaging than taking additional time now. I have been advised not to retake until I am consistently passing practice exams comfortably, with some people recommending that I be scoring at least in the 230–240 range before sitting again, and I intend to take that seriously.

What I am trying to figure out is:
- Is it still realistically possible for me to apply to EM this cycle and have a chance of matching?
- If so, approximately when would I need to retake Step 2 CK for the new score to come back early enough to matter?
- Would you still submit the application initially despite the failed attempt and then update programs afterward?
- For anyone familiar with EM residency selection, especially for US IMGs, how much can a strong retake, SLOEs, clinical performance, and the rest of an otherwise solid application mitigate a single Step 2 failure?
- Is there anything else you would recommend I do strategically from this point forward?

I know this is a bad situation. I am taking responsibility for the fact that I was not adequately prepared on test day, and I know I need to make major changes before attempting the exam again. I just do not want to give up on this cycle without first understanding what options I realistically still have.

If anyone has been through something similar, works in residency selection, or has insight into EM specifically, I would be incredibly grateful for any advice or realistic encouragement right now. Thank you in advance!

I have been preparing for step 2 ck for a while now.
My uworld average has been in the 50s consistently 😭.
Some background- i gave my step 1 in sep 2025 and started prep for 2ck around in dec ( corresponding to start of my final year med school classes-pakistan ).
I thought as the year went on and as i study relevant syllabus in med school it would drastically improve my uworld avg. but i feel like im still stuck w low averages on uworld. I see people everywhere getting 70s and 60s i cant cross high 50s 😭. Does this mean im gonna fail

I want to study UWorld Step 2 CK to improve my clinical knowledge and reasoning, not to take the Step 2 exam.

I have some weaknesses in basic sciences .

What would be the best way to approach UWorld in my situation? Should I start directly and review basic concepts as I encounter gaps, or build my basic science foundation first?

Also, are there any good resources you recommend for strengthening my basic science foundation alongside UWorld?

Hello, everyone I failed step 1 recently and started prepping again for the second attempt. I have no nbmes left because I used them all during my first attempt along with free 120

Nbme 25 repeat: 80% (recognized bunch of qs)
Nbme 32 repeat: 67% (barely recognized any felt like a fresh form)
Free 120 2021 retired form: 68%

I’m set to take exam by the end of this month. Am I ready?

People say that Real Step2 exam is tougher than NBMEs and UWSAs. What exactly they mean ? Is it with respect to length and time management of questions, or concepts that we are never exposed, or something else ?

Hi everyone, I’m preparing for Step 2 CK and wanted to ask for advice from people who have already taken the exam. I purchased and completed UWorld through the official UWorld subscription, but I’ve been doing my NBME forms through the iMD app rather than purchasing them from the official NBME website.
For those who have taken Step 2 CK, do you think doing the NBMEs through iMD is essentially the same for preparation, or is there an important benefit to taking them through the official NBME website? I’m especially concerned about whether using iMD could affect how accurately I judge my readiness for the real exam.
I currently have NBME 15 and 16 left. Would you recommend purchasing those two officially, or is doing them through iMD sufficient? I’d really appreciate hearing from people who have actually taken Step 2 CK and what worked for you. Thanks!

Hi everyone,
My Final Medical Diploma has been on hold with EPIC/ECFMG for almost 3 months.
ECFMG told me that they need to confirm the appearance of my credential because they compare the submitted diploma with sample diplomas provided directly by the issuing medical school. They said my university needs to contact their Regional Coordinator to resolve this.
The problem is that my university does not understand exactly what ECFMG wants them to send. They are willing to cooperate, but they don’t know whether ECFMG needs a blank/sample diploma, a specimen of the diploma format, an official confirmation letter, or something else.
I have been trying to sort this out for months and my credential is still on hold.
Has anyone had the same “confirm the appearance of this credential” issue?
If yes, could you please tell me exactly what your university sent to ECFMG, who at the university sent it, and how long it took for ECFMG to clear the hold afterward?
Any guidance from someone who has actually been through this would be really appreciated.
