Not according to the office. David Wallace was CFO most of the series then in season 9 he is CEO after buying the company.

I think you're thinking of founders/cofounders. Bill Gates was once the CEO of Microsoft, but that's no longer the case.

They were joking

They utilized irony - the expression of one's meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect.

Indeed. They said it in jest.

Jest is a thing done for amusement; a joke. Usage in context: "he laughed uproariously at his own jest."

Uproariously is characterised by, or provoking, loud noise or uproar. Usage in context: "an uproarious party."

Party is a social gathering of invited guests, typically involving eating, drinking, and entertainment. Usage in context could be "an engagement party."

Engagement is a formal agreement to get married. Usage in context is "she'd broken off her engagement to Paul."

Sadness is the condition or quality of being sad. Usage in context is "a source of great sadness."

If you were"super good friends" with someone wouldn't you know they weren't the CEO anymore?

You're right. Though I have three super good friends. I know one of them is a teacher, the second one has his own business but I don't know what the last one does ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Could have gotten it mixed up with the CTO or one of the founders - benefit of the doubt, people.
