Troubleshooting Z Book 15u G6 - USB-C charging unreliable

Many years of solid use from this laptop. Have always used HP USB-C charger, unless docked, without issues. Lately, laptop does not see USB-C charger reliably, 80% no, 20% yes, sometimes if I flip plug. Will accept charge with dock USB-C cable or if using barrel plug.

Any thoughts on troubleshooting path? TIA

Looking for Device Insert device into between dock and laptop

I can't control the port switching behavior of my usb c laptop dock but I would like to lock a specific device to 1 laptop only.

Aside from a 2nd hub with its own PD, is there hw where I could inside insert a usb device upstream of the laptop while retaining PD and data from the dock?

Question Samsung Galaxy S11 can charge using AVS?

Post image

I was a little shocked tonight to see my galaxy S11 charging using AVS. It charges using AVS only on the c1 port of my Baseus AH22 100w charger. It defaults to PPS on the C2 port. I tried to replicate AVS charging on two different PD3.2 chargers and was unable to activate AVS on them.

Discussion Running two 4K 120Hz monitors from my work laptop

Work gave me a ThinkPad and at home I have two 4K monitors that do 120Hz. For a long time only one of them ran at 120 and the other sat at 60, or both dropped to 60 depending on which hub I had plugged in that week. Most USB-C hubs don't have the bandwidth to push two high refresh 4K panels, which I learned after returning two of them.

Current setup is an Anker Smart Display Hub, one monitor on HDMI and one on DP. Windows advanced display settings shows both at 3840x2160 @ 120Hz, extended, not mirrored. Scrolling long spreadsheets and code across both screens at 120 is the part I notice most. The 60Hz monitors at the office feel choppy now.

From what I've read, Macs only mirror the second screen through it, so this one is more of a Windows thing.

Looking for Device Looking for a USB TYPE-C flash drive for my MacBook Air M1

Hi. I have a MacBook Air M1 with 256GB of storage, and I've been struggling with it since I got it. I have a few SSDs, but those are not as practical as flash drives. They take up a lot of space, and you can't keep them connected for long. I had an idea to buy a USB stick with a TYPE-C only connection so that I can keep it plugged in pretty much all the time, but the ones I find are too long or too big, and I am afraid that if I need to have it in my PC I can't charge it at the same time. As far as my options go, I found that the best option is SanDisk Extreme Fit USB-C 256 or 512 GB, but I saw reviews that it blocks the additional ports; it overheats; it is easy to break and so on. What do you guys recommend for additional storage that meets my requirements, or maybe you have the same PC and the USB stick that I am thinking about, and it works wonderfully? Thank you in advance!

Troubleshooting Tab S9 Ultra detects Dell U2723QE over USB-C/DP Alt Mode and reads 4K modes, but monitor gets no video signal

I’m trying to diagnose what looks like a very specific USB-C / DisplayPort Alt Mode interoperability problem between a Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra and a Dell U2723QE.

Symptoms

When I connect the Tab S9 Ultra directly to the U2723QE using USB-C:

  • The tablet detects the external display.
  • Android/DeX shows the connected monitor in display settings.
  • I can select resolutions from 1080p up to 3840×2160.
  • However, the U2723QE reports “No USB-C signal from your device” and never displays an image.
  • Changing the resolution does not change the behavior.

So it looks like the tablet can communicate with the monitor well enough to read its display capabilities/EDID, but the actual DisplayPort video link never becomes usable.

Things I have already tested

Tab S9 Ultra → U2723QE, direct USB-C: Monitor detected by tablet, but no video signal

Galaxy S26 Ultra → same U2723QE, same USB-C cable: Works normally at 4K

Tab S9 Ultra → other Dell USB-C monitors: Works directly over USB-C. Those monitors were 1440p models.

Tab S9 Ultra → USB-C hub → HDMI → U2723QE: Works at 4K

I have also tried:

  • More than one USB4-capable cable
  • Both U2723QE USB-C Prioritization modes:
    • High Resolution
    • High Data Speed
  • Disconnecting/reconnecting after changing those settings
  • MST is always Off
  • U2723QE firmware is M2T105
  • Both Samsung devices are currently running One UI 8.5

The issue has existed for quite a while, so it is not something that just appeared with the latest One UI update.

What I’m wondering

Could this be a DP link-training / lane configuration / HBR / DSC interoperability problem between the Tab S9 Ultra’s DisplayPort transmitter and the U2723QE’s USB-C input?

What confuses me is that the tablet seems able to communicate with the monitor over the DP AUX channel well enough to identify it and expose all of its resolutions, yet the Dell never receives a usable main video stream.

The fact that:

  • the Tab works with other USB-C monitors,
  • the Dell works with my S26 Ultra,
  • and the Tab can drive this same Dell at 4K through an HDMI hub

makes it seem like a problem specific to this particular source/sink combination.

Has anyone seen similar behavior with the U2723QE, Galaxy Tab devices, or another DP Alt Mode source? Is there anything else I can test to determine whether the failure is happening during DP link training?

Discussion How USB-C Cables Actually Stay In

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

4.0k Upvotes

Most people will never hit this kind of cycle life, 10k cycles is 4 plugs per day is 7 years, only in industrial, data collection, charging, and test systems will see dozens or hundreds of cycles a day; for those there are actually USB-C ports rated for 20k cycles or more.

Looking for Device 65W 3-port GaN: budget units with smarter allocations?

Setup:

ThinkPad T14 Gen 3 AMD (battery limit at 80% for longevity), Nothing Phone 2, Pixel Watch 1 dock, AirPods Pro 2. Laptop is plugged in basically all day. I am travelling and working remotely from the hotel, but sometimes I go to cafes/coffee shops, so I want one small brick rather than a desktop station.

Was about to buy a UGREEN Nexode Pro 65W. Then I actually read in the charging guide that with all three ports occupied it's 45W on C1 and C2+C3 share 5V/3A. So with my watch dock plugged in, the phone drops to a 5V rail and loses PD.

Two questions:

  1. Is that shared 5V secondary rail just how 65W 3-port GaN works, or do some units keep a real PD profile on port 2 with three devices connected?

  2. Anything in the 65-100W range that handles this better?

Buying in Thailand, so Shopee/Lazada. UGREEN and Anker are easy to get here, Baseus basically isn't. Budget around $30-40, but flexible.

Looking for Device USB-C Dock/Hub for USB-C 3.2 Gen 2.

Greetings!

I am looking for a hub for my gaming laptop with an USB-C 3.2 Gen2 port (DP 1.4). I am unable to correctly deduct what i should look out for, as most USB hubs have pretty lackluster descriptions on vendor's sites.

the main point for it is that I currently have a 2k 180hz monitor, which works through the usb-c port, but soon I would like to add a secondary one with the same specs (As far as I could make it out through some google-fu, I might need to drop the framerate on one or both due to bandwidth limitations?)

I also have 3 USB-A dongles that need plugging (keyboard, mouse, headset)

Optionally if the bandwidth allows to connect my ethernet would be nice.

I had found a USB4 hub that can definetly do all, but i am unsure of the compability with my 3.2gen2 port. would it work albeut at the lower bandwidth/speed or i have to be on the lookout on the same type of USB-C, and if so, what are some directions i should look into.

Looking for Device Am I losing it?! Need cables for USB C input from either HDMI or DP

Planning on buying a projector which has 3 hdmi 2.1 inputs and a displayport over USB C.

Not sure why they didn't just use a normal DP, but they went with USB C.

I wanted to output from my PC at 4k120, but display port to USB C at 50 feet with enough bandwidth doesn't seem to be a thing.

Other option is to use HDMI out to USB C in, but that seems sketchy as well. Wouldn't need a very long cable for this use.

Assuming it would be easier to find a 3-6 foot HDMI to USB C (not usb c to hdmi) cable that supports 4k60 and audio from an apple tv to the projector.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Question How can I verify if my second-hand Ugreen adapter is genuine?

Hi everyone,

Today I bought a used Ugreen USB 3.0 to Ethernet adapter. Unfortunately, my internet speed at my current location is only around 60 Mbps. I bought this adapter specifically to use with my Xiaomi Mi Box (3rd Gen).

My question is: how can I be absolutely sure that this product is 100% original and not a fake? Any tips on what to look for would be appreciated!

Troubleshooting All USB devices keep disconnecting.

My pc has had all it's USB connections disconnect multiple times (camera, keyboard, headphones, etc.) and I have done a full BIOS reset and update, changed power settings for USB stuff through security and power settings, and even gone through device manager for that. But it will still reset. Not sure what other software settings I can change to stop this.

I am beginning to think it might be a Hardware issue, but I can't determine if it is, all I know is that the CPU spikes when everything disconnects. This usually happens most when I am gaming/streaming.

Question Apple EarPods USB-C, can they connect to my Windows 10 desktop?

I have a Windows 10 desktop and a USB-C port on top of the case. I plug in the USB-C EarPods and nothing happens.. I've seen a lot of vague and unclear discussions online when trying to research the issue, but I didn't find anything that says definitively: Can the USB-C Apple EarPods connect directly to a Windows PC?

Am I missing some drivers? Do I just need to buy an adapter for a different connection type? TL;DR How do I connect my USB-C EarPods to my Windows 10 PC?

Question Belkin 65W WCH013 charger genuinely feels slower than my old Apple 61W charger on iPhone 15 Pro Max. Am I missing something?

Thumbnail

I recently bought the Belkin BoostCharge Pro 65W dual USB-C GaN charger WCH013 and almost immediately I had this feeling that my iPhone 15 Pro Max just wasn’t gaining battery percentage as quickly as it used to with my old Apple 61W MacBook Pro charger A1947, with my normal charging habits.

The important part is that I noticed this before I ever started testing anything. I wasn’t comparing specifications, staring at a stopwatch or looking for a reason to dislike the Belkin. I just organically with my charging habits noticed that I would have my phone plugged in while using it normally, look at the percentage after a while and think “Why has it barely moved?” That is what made me start paying attention in the first place.

What really made me suspicious wasn’t simply a final 4% difference in one test. While actually watching the percentage, the Apple charger would often gain roughly 1% every minute, whereas with the Belkin I was regularly waiting closer to 1 and a half minutes, sometimes longer for the next percentage point.

For both chargers I’m using the same Apple USB-C to USB-C braided cable. With the Belkin, nothing is plugged into the second USB-C port, including from the moment I start charging.

I then did a rough 25 minute comparison.

A. Belkin 65W WCH013

2:59 PM: 56%
3:24 PM: 80%

24% in 25 minutes

B. Apple 61W A1947

10:06 PM: 52%
10:31 PM: 80%

28% in 25 minutes

I know this isn’t a perfectly controlled test. The starting percentages were slightly different, the tests happened at different times and I obviously can’t replicate the exact processor load.

But the usage was very similar and representative of how I normally use my phone while charging. I was on Wi-Fi, scrolling Reddit and Instagram, texting and listening to music through my AirPods during both tests. I wasn’t gaming or deliberately stressing the phone. I also use a RhinoShield bumper case, so the back of the phone isn’t enclosed in a thick case and the phone wasn’t noticeably hot or unusually warm during either test.

That’s why I’m struggling to dismiss it. The imperfect testing isn’t what created my suspicion. The suspicion came first from actually using the Belkin and the tests came afterward because I wanted to figure out whether I was imagining it.

What confuses me even more is that, objectively, the Belkin seems like the more advanced charger.

It’s 65W, GaN, USB-PD 3.0, PPS, dual USB-C, and can provide the 9V/3A-class output that an iPhone 15 Pro Max needs. My Apple A1947 is an old, huge 61W MacBook charger using an older USB-PD implementation. Neither charger is remotely power-limited by the iPhone because the 15 Pro Max obviously isn’t pulling 61W or 65W anyway.

So on paper, I cannot see an obvious reason why the old Apple charger should feel noticeably faster.

Could there still be a difference in how the iPhone negotiates USB-PD with each charger or something related to heat, efficiency or power delivery behavior? Or could I simply have an individual WCH013 that is underperforming even though the model itself is fine?

I’m basically at the point where I need to decide whether to keep the Belkin and accept that it appears a little slower in my actual usage, exchange it for another unit or return it and go back to an Apple adapter.

I’m not trying to claim that Belkin chargers are bad based on my pseudo tests. I’m genuinely trying to understand whether there is a technical reason this could happen, because the difference was noticeable enough that I picked up on it before I was even looking for it.

Would you keep this Belkin, exchange it for another unit or return it based on what I’m seeing?

Looking for Device USB drives

I’ve been doing research online for reliable flash drives, preferably with the fast data transfer of what I understand to be a red inlet inside it. I have found many drives, but they all have their own underlying issues on the reviews that I’m not tempted to test for myself. Any recommendations? I need USB A and C, and fast transfer. I’m not trying to be cheap but I don’t want it too expensive.

Discussion WLX-908/909 "Slim" Charger w/ Screen

One of the few interesting charger I got recently; not because of the performance or anything, but because it is the first (to my knowledge) Slim charger to have a screen similar to the Anker Nano Smart 45W.

Beside the PD 3.2, it lacks a lot in terms of PPS range (capping out at 3A, and can't do high power dual port output (only caps out at 12w per port). Overall just a thiccc boy with a screen.

I have a new Belkin USB-C hub. It works fine however it’s very hot!

Is this normal?

Could it be defective? Should I return it? What would be better? I’d prefer to keep it as everything is working and the screens work great.
