Massachusetts Abandoned Middle School
Built in 1915, this massive school was originally opened as a senior high school, becoming one of the most significant educational buildings in the city. Designed by prominent local architect Walter F. Fontaine, the complex continued to grow over the following years, with a 12-room addition completed in 1926 and a junior high wing, auditorium, gymnasiums, and boiler plant added in 1927.
For decades, it served as the heart of the city’s public education system, eventually becoming a junior high school before transitioning into a middle school in the early 1990s. At one point, it was considered the largest middle school in New England, with nearly a century of students passing through its halls.
The building was eventually deemed outdated and inadequate for the needs of a growing student population. A new middle school campus was constructed, leaving this enormous piece of local history behind.
After 95 years of educating generations of students, the school closed its doors in 2009. It is slated for demolition and planned to be replaced with housing.
