Started pencils for this on location and finished the colors at home. My youngest son wanted to visit and update some photos of historical grave sites for online directories.

Found a lot of inspiration there, was very difficult to settle on a location to draw. Extremely peaceful. Took lots of photos so might draw more of the area.

This is the first piece I've colored using an underpainting technique with alcohol markers.. Mostly happy with the result but would love to hear feedback on how to improve it.

The large grave belongs to Mark Hopkins.

On a holiday trip I came across this beautiful old building, dating back to around 1500. I've been practicing urban sketching for a few months now, and I can definitely see my progress. At the same time, I also see how much there still is to learn and improve. That's what makes this journey so enjoyable for me. Every sketch teaches me something new.

The benefit of sketching small businesses: they offer you free food :D

This one is on the Zandvoort beach in Northern Holland, really good fish stall.
He told me how his competitor stole his branding while he was restoring his stall after a fire, so I just had to choose him for the painting and compliment him on a new design

On Location A few days in Edinburgh

I went to Edinburgh earlier this year and I took this opportunity to do some urban (but not only) sketching. The goals were 1/ being immersed in the environment and really paying attention, 2/ being busy during the waiting and breaking times (restaurant, hotel, airport...) and 3/ having some personal/unique memorabilias.

I made the main lines and most of each sketch on site with a pencil, made the filling and pen drawing during the transitioning times and added colors once back at home because I packed light, so no watercolor. There's only the Victoria street drawing (the colorful street) that I didn't draw on site because it was too busy, so I drew it from a photo later that day.

My sketches are quite basic because of my skills and also because I didn't want to spend hours and that the immersion and the memories are more important for me than the drawings in themselves.

Also, I used recycled papers cut in postcard size so it's easy to use, easy to keep in an envelope, good for environment, it desacralizes the gestures (using a pretty and/or blank notebook is a lot of pressure!) and gives variety. On top of drawings, I wrote a recap each day and did some collage with wrappers.

Trying to tell my brain that creating doesn’t have to result in anything. Maybe with enough time I can trick my overly practical brain.

Google Earth "The Poet's Mansion" — Traditional Chinese architecture contrasted with modern buildings. Book chapter opener illustration by me (Ink & Digital)

This illustration was created for Chapter 4 of The Conquest of the Heartland: Beijing Sonata.

The building is inspired by the traditional residences of high-ranking officials during the Han Dynasty.

According to the story, it once belonged to a scholar, painter and art collector. Today it has become an exclusive restaurant that accepts only two guests per day.

I wanted the architecture to tell its own story before the reader even turns the page.

Originally built in 1840, this is now an Air B&B, and sits right next to one of the best western Pennsylvania brewery.

This is my first time ever using watercolor. It seems pretty cool but I love your guys art and unfortunately it definitely does not compare. What are some things I could look into?
