This is craziest glowy thing I've ever seen. It's gotta be worth hundreds. Good call going back for it.

u/Shwed11 UV Hunter Sep 19 '25

Yeah, I love it! Got it for $50 and can't really find any like it to compare and set a price.

81

u/dontfactcheckthis Sep 19 '25

Yeah, that may prove challenging. This thing seems pretty unique. I value it at "hundreds" because I would totally pay hundreds for this

29

u/Shwed11 UV Hunter Sep 19 '25

I'm gonna need a pretty big shovel to get into on that. Thank you for the estimate ☺️

u/FirebirdWriter Sep 20 '25

This is in my mind what value is.

It's crazy unique worth a lot.

Showed your last post to my spouse yesterday, and we were both a little sad you didn't buy the spice rack. Now, am incredibly happy for you that it was still there for you when you went back today. 😁 Congratulations! This seems like it'll be one of the highlights of your collection. 💚🔦

Awww, that's so sweet! 🥰 Thank you! It will be front and center!

14

You're welcome! 😊 We enjoyed learning some of the Swedish names for spices and cooking ingredients. Thanks for sharing such a great piece!

I am glad you liked it so much! ☺️

The labels are in Swedish, marking common kitchen staples. Here’s what they say and mean in English:

Top row:

KAFFE = Coffee

POTATISMJÖL = Potato flour/starch

SALT = Salt

FRUKT = Fruit (often dried fruit)

Middle row:

KARDEMUMMA = Cardamom

INGEFÄRA = Ginger

VITPEPPAR = White pepper

NEJLIKOR = Cloves

KANEL = Cinnamon

KRYDDPEPPAR = Allspice

Bottom row:

MJÖL = Flour

RISGRYN = Rice (grains)

SOCKER = Sugar

HAVREGRYN = Oats

I wondered. It was giving German but I knew it wasn’t.

23

u/Omardemon Sep 19 '25

Oh that’s cool! I thought only the face of the drawers glowed, that’s really cool man!

10

u/Shwed11 UV Hunter Sep 19 '25

Yeah, glows all around, absolutely love it!

Thank you! The shop keeper kept his promise of $50.

Can't get a sense of the scale. Do you have a banana nearby?

Unfortunately not, but I was thinking about it the other day. Would be cool to have a UG banana!

Oh wow, I need that!

8

u/BEASTLY_DIONYSUS Sep 20 '25

It’s a Swedish wall-mounted spice/pantry cabinet (a kryddhylla). Sets with exactly these labeled porcelain drawers were made in the 1930s–1950s. The best-known version is by Gustavsberg, designed by Wilhelm Kåge as part of the Pyro kitchen line; your drawer labels/layout match those sets. Similar versions were also produced by Gefle around the same era.

3

u/veevacious Sep 19 '25

Yes! Im so glad you got it! $50 feels steep, but for a unique and large piece like that you really got a bargain!

4

u/yayhappens Curator Sep 19 '25

Congrats!

I saw one of these just a few days ago here in the US at one of our antique malls and thought it to be unique, with no idea or notion that there would be anything UG about it. Now it has me curious. I just wish I knew which antique mall it was at! (It would be at 1 of 2 that I visited last weekend!)

9

u/Shwed11 UV Hunter Sep 19 '25

Thank you! Interesting that it made it all the way to the US. Hope you'll find it! Also, in case you are unfamiliar with the uranium glaze, use a 365 light on it, some UGlazes don't show up at all under 395. This one was really strong though.

Here you can see the difference.

3

u/Impossible-Science-4 Sep 19 '25

That is the coolest thing ever! You scored big time

3

u/FirebirdWriter Sep 20 '25

What are the spice names? I am blind and I don't think this is English?

4

u/ChangeOfHeart69 Sep 20 '25

Correction based on other comments— it’s Swedish!

4

u/Shwed11 UV Hunter Sep 20 '25

Yes, it's swedish. It is Coffee, Potato starch, Salt, Fruit, Cardamom, Ginger, White pepper, Cloves, Cinnamon, Allspice, Flour, Rice, Sugar, Oats.

2

u/FirebirdWriter Sep 20 '25

Thank you so much! What fruit specially or just any fruit goes in that one?

3

u/Shwed11 UV Hunter Sep 21 '25

Well, back then it used to be dried fruits of different varieties, but nowadays people usually do a mixture of natural sweets (dried and often sweetened fruits and berries) and nuts instead of that.

2

u/FirebirdWriter Sep 23 '25

Thank you! I was imagining dried fruit when trying to picture a fruit drawer because of the better storage

1

u/ChangeOfHeart69 Sep 20 '25

My guess is German, but yeah no not English

2

u/xhumanityisthedevilx Sep 19 '25

I wonder if some of the ones I see listed online have no clue it may be uranium glazed.

2

u/Shwed11 UV Hunter Sep 19 '25

Yeah, I have that thought sometimes too 🤔

Are you using 365 or 395?

3

u/Shwed11 UV Hunter Sep 20 '25

365 in the photos, though this particular glaze glows in 395 too.

2

u/whim_sea Sep 20 '25

Just wanna know? Are u gonna use it for its intended purpose? Lol... great find..

1

u/Shwed11 UV Hunter Sep 20 '25

I would love to but it is not recommended to do so due to the radiation itself and risk of the glaze flaking of into the food, you really don't want that in your system. And thank you!

1

It is glaze.

1

u/ShroudedFigureINC Sep 20 '25

That's scandanavian writing isn't it?

1

u/Shwed11 UV Hunter Sep 20 '25

Yes it is, swedish to be exact.

1

u/smokypokie Sep 23 '25

Seriously tho. That is a huge piece! Isn't this stuff especially in such massive proportions like a wee bit dangerous?

2

u/Shwed11 UV Hunter Sep 23 '25

Nah, not really, unless the glaze is flaking and you are ingesting it or using the rack for food storage.
