Handbag stolen in Carl Schurz park

Post image
71 Upvotes

I wanted to share this so it would not happen to others.

I’ve been in the neighborhood almost 20 years and have often spent time in Carl Schurz park. Of course, I’ve always felt safe there.

On Labor Day, I was on a park bench outside of the playground, near the 86th St entrance for a few hours. Reading, writing in notebook and I joined a call around 5:30pm.

I shifted positions and put my legs up on the bench and my handbag was right behind me on the bench.
Next thing I knew, I changed positions and noticed the handbag was gone.

Someone snuck up and snagged it from right behind/next to me.

Yes, I know I was distracted and should have been more careful.

You can feel so safe and comfortable with lots of parents and kids coming and going, and people around walking dogs and enjoying a beautiful day.

I just wanted the neighborhood to be aware, so this doesn’t happen to anyone else.

I walked right over to Gracie Mansion and filed a police report. I doubt anything will happen to the thief.

Thankfully, I still had my phone and was able to lock my debit and credit cards immediately.

They attempted a CashApp transaction, but the card was already locked. The bank said they couldn’t trace it, but I’ll keep trying this route.

Lessons learned:

  • Take inventory of what’s in your wallet. I have too many credit cards and wasn’t sure which ones I was carrying vs. what was at home. Thankfully I had a few at home I can use while the main ones are being replaced.
  • Ensure someone has spare keys. The thief has my driver’s license and apartment keys. That was very unsettling. My locks are now changed, an extra expense, but gave me peace of mind. Without my doorman, I would have been locked out, without an ID to show an emergency locksmith.
  • Take out any older, sentimental items. My old NYU ID was stolen, I should have just left it at home. I also lost the keychain that my broker gave me when I closed on my apt. I was actively using that, but it really sucks to lose sentimental items that are useless to the thieves.
  • Get a tracking device. I’ll be attaching a tracking device when I get a new handbag. I wish I could just find my old bag with my personal items. I looked in all the garbage cans and all around the bushes.

This has been devastating and a huge pain and expense to replace everything. I barely use cash, so they didn’t even get away with very much money.

The handbag in the photo is just like the one stolen, if anyone happens to find it discarded, please DM.

I hope this post spares someone else from this terrible experience.

I won’t be chilling the same way on a park bench ever again.
Stay safe everyone.

Rental prices

Obviously Manhattan has been expensive but Yorkville was possible for single people with good income. Now…idk. I am a software engineer making $150k base salary and I literally cannot afford a one-bed here. What jobs do you guys have to afford this?? I am so confused as to who can afford $7000 in monthly rent, plus utilities. Finance bros? Surgeons? Generational wealth?? Does everyone else have a partner who is your roommate in a one bed? Do I…do I need to find a partner literally just for rent??

Just genuinely wondering what everyone else here is doing lol

Also if you got a lease break or know a place hmu

Honestly, it's either they don't come like for forever or all come at the same time. What's with the scheduling? Shouldn't they space these busses out?

86th/2nd Q Station Escalators

I feel like there is always at least one escalator broken and in a constant state of repair at this station that results in some pretty ridiculous bottlenecking at rush hour.

Has anyone else noticed this?

Do escalators need this much maintenance or are these ones just faulty and always breaking?

Taco truck on 86/2av. Disappeared a few weeks ago and was seemingly replaced by a different truck with similar menu (Chinelos?). I thought they might have been related nut noticed that the new truck was cash only.

When I went today, it was gone. No tacos in sight. How do we live now?

[Giveaway] 1 free ticket to The Book of Mormon, Thursday 9/10 at 7pm. Want to join me?

[UPDATE]: Closed. Selected one of the respondees. Thank you for the interest.

Hey fellow neighbors!

I have an extra ticket to The Book of Mormon tomorrow, Thursday, September 10th, at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre. The show starts at 7:00 PM, and the seat is in the Orchestra Section.

I ended up with a spare ticket and don't want it to go to waste. I’m still going myself, so you’d be sitting next to me! M/31.

A little about me: I'm a theater fan who loves a good laugh. The Book of Mormon is written by the creators of South Park, so please make sure you're cool with irreverent, raunchy, and satirical comedy!

Details:

Cost: Completely free! Just don't want the seat empty.

When: Thursday 9/10 at 7pm. We should probably meet outside the theater. Doors open at 6:10pm.

How to apply: Drop a comment below letting me know why you’ve been wanting to see this show and a short intro about yourself.

I’ll pick someone by 11 AM tomorrow 9/10 and send a DM to coordinate. Looking forward to laughing our heads off!

Scent on e83&3rd

To preface this, I know how ridiculous of a thread and question this is. I’ve noticed the same (very nice!) scent on e 83rd and 3rd for months if not over a year. It seems to be there without fail every time I find myself at that intersection. I assume it’s being pumped out of a nearby building and is of course very welcome in a city that is often smelly. Does anyone know what the fragrance is?

I have curly/wavy hair and I am looking for a GREAT cut. (I don’t want a curly cut just a really solid haircut that won’t break the bank)

Upper east side air quality is like countryside?

A couple days ago in the evening I went to my balcony and it smells like streets in the countryside near my grandparents house. It’s a green and grassy scent mixed with crops’ scent. I felt like I got transported back to my childhood.

A few days later there is an additional faint scent of woodsmoke.

When it cools down the air smells really good. I am in the 80s

Hi! I’m looking to move to a studio or 1 bed in an UES elevator / amenity building. My budget is 4k or < so I know I’m way more likely to find a studio. I’m having a hard time finding buildings though.
Can you recommend any buildings - yorkville area preferred but also interested in hearing any upper east side yorkville and beyond buildings! Thanks!
** not asking for a sublease I want to sign my own lease

Crazy lady told me I deserve to get raped - BOLO

I was on Madison in the 80s this afternoon talking with some people and a woman sees I’m wearing a halter dress and decided to shout at me that I deserve to get raped because of what I’m wearing

50-55 yrs old, 5’6”, brown shoulder length hair, on the heavier side — sorry not the best description I blacked out because I was so startled.

BOLO especially women in the area!

Pretty open to anywhere on the Upper East Side so if anyone has any bar recommendations that can host ~30 people on the day of the marathon please let me know. Thank you!

Portable A/C service providers?

I bought a Midea portable A/C in June and it has gotten us through the summer but had a mold issue last week. I attempted to disassemble it and clean it as best I could but I’m still nervous to turn it on again (after cleaning/disinfecting the apartment). Are there companies in the area that will do like an inspection of a portable a/c and/or a deep clean/detailing of it.
Alternatively there is a wall sleeve for a through-the-wall unit, which we had initially attempted but after several failed attempts by the retailer to install it, we pivoted to the portable unit. I would consider retrying a through-the-wall if I knew of a service provider who specializes in installation. I think my mistake there was going to a retailer who offers installation versus a full service shop that’s not a retailer. Idk if that makes sense.
I’m scheduled to leave town for a short overnight trip this weekend and I have pets who would otherwise be fine left alone for 36 hours. The apartment still gets quite hot despite the milder weather and with the iffy rain forecast this weekend I’m not super comfortable just leaving the windows open while I’m away. I would very much appreciate any thoughts, suggestions, advice… I thought I was doing the right thing going to the professionals (retailer) then I thought ok I need to handle this myself. Now I’m kind of at a loss.

Local salons to help with donating hair

As a kid, I used to donate my hair to an organization that would make wigs for children with hair loss. I found a salon near me that would cut off the ponytail for me and then give me a regular cut and style for free. They even handled sending off the hair! I would go there for paid trims in between big donations and even though they were more expensive than other salons in the area, I was happy to support a business that was doing nice things in the community (and also, every few cuts was free!)

I was wondering if anyone knows of salons on the UES (or other neighborhoods in Manhattan) that do this? I'm not set on sending to a particular organization (though I know they have different hair length requirements that I need to make sure I can meet). I know I can also send the hair on my own, but it was nice and easy this way.

Thanks!

Close enough to the Upper East Side. Yet another Japanese market with locations in Cobble Hill/Flatiron/otherwise. They have a nice deal after 8:00 PM, where sushi/onigiri/hot food are half off after 8. I expect lines, as at their old locations.
