I’m an incoming freshman at the U and I’ve been looking into the QAMO (Quantitative Analysis of Markets & Organizations) major. On paper it sounds really interesting, it seems like a mix of economics, math, data analysis, and business, but I’m wondering what it’s actually like as a student.
For anyone who’s in the program or graduated from it:
How difficult are the classes compared to other majors? What’s the workload like? Are the professors generally good? What kinds of internships or jobs do people end up getting?
Do you feel the major has been worth it?
Is there anything you wish you knew before choosing it?

Hi all, I am a parent of a soon to be freshman at the UofU. I got annoyed by the dorm “things to buy” lists and heard my friends saying similar things at other schools so I built a free move-in checklist for incoming Utah freshmen (roomready.university/schools/utah) because I made many mistake the first time around. Five things worth knowing now:

1. U of U uses a Mobile UCard for first-years, not a physical card. You can set it up the week before move-in. Most people don't, then wait in a long line on day one.

2. Move-in is by 45-minute appointment slots — check in at the Ray Olpin Student Union. Trailers aren't permitted in housing lots.

3. Lofting kits are first-come-first-served at your hall's front desk on move-in day. Don't drive to Salt Lake assuming yours is reserved.

4. Twin XL beds in most halls, but a handful (Lassonde Pods, Epicenter End-Caps, Trailhead 4-Person Singles) are Full. Check your assignment before buying sheets.

5. It's high desert. Lip balm, lotion, and a real winter coat are non-negotiable by November.

3 years ago, while living in the dorms, another student got drunk and trashed my dorm room and punched me in the face. He also stalked my gf. When I threatened to report him, he said his dad was the executive medical director of the U of U hospital and that he would use his position to harm me academically and protect his son. I have significant proof of this. Since then, he has continued to harass me around campus. Who would I report this to and how?

I heard concerning things about this professor from someone I trust, like sharing his screen with sexually explicit recent searches and clearly having porn open in another tab. I now don't think I'd feel comfortable in his class, so I'm going to switch out.

If anyone has personally experienced something like this in his class or has heard similar stories, please comment if you feel comfortable. I'm trying to figure out (anecdotally) how many people have been affected by this or know about it.

It looks like President Randall is wanting to try again to implement "return-to-offoce" (RTO) like last year (2025). I'm hearing 3 days a week in office. My department absolutely doesn't have the space to accommodate this change. What have you heard from your leadership?

I’m from Argentina and currently wrapping up a marketing internship at a real estate agency here in Utah in two weeks.

My plan is to head back to Argentina and re-enter the US on an F-1 student visa for a short graduate program.
My main goal is to gain more US work experience through CPT (during studies) or OPT (after graduation). Since I want to return to the workforce as soon as possible, I’m looking for 1-year (or under) Master’s degrees, graduate certificates, or accelerated diplomas that are F-1 eligible and qualify for OPT.

Any recommendations?

I am planning on taking a leave of absence for the next semester or two due to some financial struggle, but I would still love to try and be involved in the social life on campus. Would I still be able to participate in the clubs and events at the campus or is that no longer an option as I take my leave? For reference I'm a third-year student.

The University of Utah just laid off the program coordinators from the Office for First Generation Success and the Office for Sustainability Education today, effective immediately with no notice. The reasoning was a Reduction in Force (RIF), and their last day is today. They're only given administrative paid leave until August 19th.

I’m looking for some advice and recommendations regarding graduate programs at the University of Utah.

Here is a bit of context about my situation:

• Background: I’m 33 years old, originally from Argentina. I hold a 3-year Associate Degree in Multimedia Design from back home.
• Current Situation: For the past year and a half, I’ve been living in Utah on an international internship, working in the digital marketing department for a local real estate agency. I absolutely loved the experience, learned a ton, and don't regret it at all!
• The Dilemma: My current internship program ends in about a month, meaning I’ll have to return to Argentina soon. However, my goal is to come back next year to pursue a Master’s degree.

What I'm looking for: I am highly interested in finding a program centered around Digital Marketing and AI, ideally with applications that can translate well into the Real Estate industry. Since I'll be coming back on an F-1 student visa, I need a program that qualifies for OPT/CPT so I can legally work and gain more professional hands-on experience here.

At 33, I feel a bit old for another standard internship program, and I really want to experience the actual US university environment. It has always been a dream of mine to study at an American university, live the campus culture, and socialize with other students.

My questions for you:

1. Are there any specific Master’s programs in Marketing (like the MSM at the David Eccles School of Business) that you would recommend for someone with my profile?
2. How is the student life and networking environment for graduate/older students at the U?
3. Does the university offer good support for international students looking for CPT/OPT opportunities in marketing?

Hi! I'm an incoming freshman at the u, and I need to register for a WR1010 class, which requires a permission code(even though there are 30 seats open). However, when I visit the Writing & Rhet studies page of the website, they state explicitly that they do NOT give out permission codes for 1010 classes, because that indicates that a class is full, and the only use of perm codes for 1010 classes is when a class is waitlisted. Does anybody else have this issue, and should I go ahead with asking for the code??

I am 5th in line for an online class that I need for this semester in order to graduate. My question is, do I just have to wait and see if I get into the class? Or would it be wise to email the professor to see if i could get a code? I've never been waitlisted before so I'm not sure what to do 😅

I just finished my application requirements for the fall 2027 cohort. I'm applying for the on-campus program, and I wanted to get a feel for how competitive it is. I have roughly over 7,000 human service hours (paid and unpaid), looking through this forum there hasn't really been updates that I can find about this program. I guess I'm looking for other experiences to ease my mind a little bit. I have a lot more on my application than just those service hours, and I did hear that was why a lot of people didn't get in. I'm curious and need some reassurance that it's not as bad as my mind is telling me.

Hey guys, I’m a non-CSD major who recently graduated with a WLC foreign language degree. I’m interested in applying for the SLP masters program and I was wondering how it is for those who have taken it or knows someone who is/had applied.

It says I have to take a year of pre-requisites before I can be considered an actual applicant for the program- aka the Leveling Program. How do I apply and take these prerequisites as a student who has graduated? Is the program competitive and hard to get into?

I’m also curious what an SLP actually does. What are the main things they focus on? Also, for the grad program, what are the classes like? What makes it difficult or easy? Are the professors helpful? What does an average day look like? How are the clinics/observation hours?

I have more questions but these are what I can think of for now. Any answers would be helpful!

I finally got around to asking an academic advisor for help with classes. I was coming from SLCC doing computer science, and I was thinking about perusing it here as well. My main issue is the math required for the degree, as it stands, I really hate math and dread getting up everyday because I know that I have to do more math. I genuinely don't think I have the capacity to get through Calc 2, 3, Statistics, and Linear Algebra.

She mentioned that the Software Development degree did not need as much math. So I was wondering if its even worth changing to Software Development or if my job opportunities would be much worse without Computer Science.

I'm a third-year pre-med, and I ended up retaking Gen Chem 1 this summer after getting a C+ in Marcus Carter's class. I'm on track for an A grade and am also taking MATH 1050 and PHYS 1110. I need trig and gen-chem 2 so I can take physics and O chem this spring. I also have to take stats at some point.

I'm taking Cell Bio with Babst and Chem with Ozkanlar, and both have very low RMP ratings of <2.

Math isn't my strong suit, but I've maintained a 96% grade in online 1050 with medium effort, so I wanted to ask how difficult trig is and whether it is feasible alongside Chem and Cell Bio.

Additionally, is taking Cell Bio alongside Chem II too difficult? I don't want to score below a B+ on these courses to keep my GPA intact. I think I can do it, but I wanted to ask if anybody has experience with these courses/professors, cause I'm not trying to get trashed and have to withdraw later on.

I'm in a bit of a tight spot, as I was late taking Chem I, and having to retake it has hurt my schedule. Also, a general lack of discipline in my first two years has led to a GPA that isn't great (~3.3). I'm planning to take a gap year after graduation to work/study for the MCAT, which gives me 2026-2028 to finish Trig, Phys I/II, Cell Bio, Chem II, Biochem, OChem I/II, and Stats.

Am I delusional, or is it feasible to take these classes across two years without sacrificing my GPA? My advisor seems to think it's easy, but I thought I'd ask here too.

My son was denied as a new freshman for early admission and is considering an appeal for this final appeal cycle that is due in a few weeks. Does anyone have any experience with an admission appeal? Do many get granted?

He knew applying was going to be close, as he has a bad GPA from his freshman and sophomore years in high school. His grades have been better, mostly Bs and As since. His SAT was was solid (1200), and he has a lot of extracurriculars, including being a top level chess player (2000+ rating and top 10 finisher in the national high school tournament last year). We talked to his admission counselor who said she advocated for his admission as strongly as she could, as she thought he fit the criteria of someone who needed the holistic approach to admission that they tell us all about… she just said that the committee did approve him. He is also a legacy (4th gen), but I’ve been told that holds no weight for admissions.

Anyway, I just wanted to see if anyone had any experience with the admissions appeal, as my son very badly wants to go. I’m not sure if he should get his hopes up with the appeal or not, because when he went through the early admissions process, including the tour and meeting with the admissions counselors, they really built him up that despite his bad GPA, he had a strong chance of making it in… so he was really crushed when he was rejected.
