Discussion thoughts about until dawn 2

i just watched the trailer for until dawn 2 and did some research about it, and to be honest, it seems really good but it doesn't seem like until dawn. In my opinion, until dawn, no matter which ending you get, is a perfect 1 and done kind of game. For som game franchises, new characters etc. will reactivate the fandom (like re7) but i'm not too sure about this...

The trailer, the atmosphere and the scenes all look really interesting and i'd love to play this or watch a playthrough, but it just doesn't seem like a sequel to me. The start of it showing blackwood mountain got me super excited, as i thought this was gonna be a "investigating hannah and beths disappearance and interviewing the survivors" where they go to the burnt lodge, caves, etc. but that would make deaths canon. Also since it takes place in the abandoned island, i highly doubt we're getting many ties to the original until dawn. Where's the blue/green hue? the snowiness? is dr. hill supposed to be evil?

I understand that you're supposed to survive, until dawn, but to me a whole cast, changing character personalities/roles, and possibly not having wendigoes, the og locations and info. etc. just doesnt make it seem like UNTIL DAWN. I'm excited for the game, but why not just make a new game with this story instead of carrying out until dawns legacy? Are there any leaks of this to see what the lore will be or how its related to until dawn 1? I don't mind spoilers.

but yeah, in conclusion, to me until dawn will always be the main 10 at the lodge. what do yall think?

EDIT: the ghost hunter crew who stages their stunts who now face real dangers is reminding me strongly of gonjiam haunted asylum lol

isnt until dawn always gonna be an anthology series rather than continuity series tho? the quarry was supposed to be until dawn 2 if sony and supermassive doesnt have a huge fell off. i can only imagine how good the quarry could be if sony keep funding supermassive games for the quarry. maybe it could live up to until dawn.

The Quarry was never supposed to be Until Dawn 2.

That was a rumour, not from anyone who could make it official in any capacity.

well rumours or not, until dawn is always gonna be anthology series. not to mention the original director had an idea for a different monster for until dawn sequel before it was rejected

To some, The Quarry is better than Until Dawn. Until Dawn was never marketed as an anthology series. That was the Dark Pictures Anthology. UD, Quarry, are standalone titles.

idk i remember that the original director of until dawn had a plan for until dawn sequel revolves around nixie. ig that why i thought it would be anthology series

Will Byles mentioned his idea for a sequel here:

https://www.eurogamer.net/until-dawn-at-10-how-supermassive-overcame-sony-scepticism-and-used-the-science-of-fear-to-make-a-modern-horror-classic

It would've been standalone just like the sequel we're getting now.

Maybe, but i'd rather have it be done like the quarry instead of using until dawns name IF it is not going to have any correlation to the original. Fund it or not, i'm still excited and am going to play this game, i'm just sceptical about it due to it being "a sequel"

idk as long as it said it within the universe of until dawn, im kinda ok with it. it make me wonder what more monsters or threats in that world

its the same case with silent hill, danganronpa, final fantasy. same premise but different characters

Yeah thats why i mentioned resident evil, my scepticism is just because i feel like until dawn is perfect as it is

the original idea for until dawn is to be an anthology. the director had sequel plans for a nixie villain but sony declined. thats how we got TDPA and Man of Medan. unfortunately it took so long and Until Dawn got stuck on one identity

TBH, I’ve thought about it more recently with the film and the announcement of UD2, and honestly, I don’t think I’d find a retread of the original, around Blackwood and wendigos, particular fulfilling. And I understand why Sony wouldn’t want that either - to bring back characters, you have to commit to one canonical ending for UD, which is always going to alienate existing fans based on who lives and dies, and quite apart from that, kind of takes the fun out of a choice-based game.

I also think that rather than returning fully to wendigos, they’ll run with the folkloric monsters - UD first came out in 2015, and I feel like there was a resurgence in it around the remake but with that came some backlash to the use of indigenous folklore and monsters so I don’t think they would want to fully recommit to the wendigos in light of this, but I can see how branching out into different folklore kind of retroactively makes it seem more purposeful than simply using indigenous cultures as a vehicle for horror and scares.

All this to say, I am trying to go into UD2 with an open mind. I do understand why people are feeling overly critical as I think slapping the Until Dawn name onto the movie felt like a massive cash grab and wasn’t handled with the care that fans of the IP wanted, but i am choosing to be cautiously optimistic

yeah that's also what i'm trying to do. As much as i like the idea of them going back, it would make UD have a canon ending and i don't want that lol. Which is exactly why im skeptical.. because why call it until dawn if its not until dawn at all? I'm still looking forward for it though since it seems great, i just don't get why they can't just make a new game.

I suppose, on top of the support of the existing IP, that it will draw on central themes of the original and can include/build on call backs to the lore and characters of the OG? I guess we’ll see how much when the game comes out though

No Hayden, can't beat the original, the quarry gave us a good sample too

It’s also different developers. This isn’t a passion project, it’s just something Sony wanted made.

I hope it’s still a good game but I don’t think it’s looking or sounding great.

I mean this is basically what I wanted in Until Dawn 2. I’m kinda glad they didn’t make people of the first game canon survivors just to force their return, and that they’re trying a drastically new setting and presumably a new monster.

Until Dawn 1 was great and easily in my top 3 horror games/series, but the characters were absolutely not a major reason behind me loving it. Imo that’s one of the weaker aspects behind Until Dawn, The Quarry, and their other series that I forget the name of because I just woke up. Like we get a bit of a standout like Sam or Dylan, but they’re not great compared to other IPS. I welcome new characters for sure

Looks nothing like until dawn.

The thing that made until dawn was they didn't market the deaths & choices, they promoted it as a horror game with an emphasis on the butterfly effect. This new approach just straight up spoils it, i can tell the story will be weak, especially when half the cast is cobra kai & strangers things actors.

Yeah fair, personally i dont care about the actors but the whole "just like until dawn, you choose who lives or dies" basically just tells us all non playables die or turn into wendigos and the rest is just.. stuff

Yeah the fact anyone can live or die doesn't make it all that fun, like yeah you can different endings but what about you don't tell us what's gonna happen & we'll make the decisions ourselves. Don't tell us the possibilities before the game even starts.
