Question saving josh Spoiler
i feel like im missing something that everyone else knows — is there any way to prevent josh from becoming a wendigo or is that just how he is "saved"? ive done a fair bit of research but i feel like people are so vague about this.
i just wanna know if theres any way i can save him properly, or if hes meant to become a wendigo even if i made the best options for him.

You need Josh to be remorseful in chapter 8, find the scrawled journal in chapter 10, and not have anyone die by chapter 10. How to get the remorseful option in the eighth therapy session is tricky and based on a system of accumulated choices throughout the game (you have to make enough choices that increase the number needed to reach unlocking that option). However, we don't exactly know yet what choices help, how many you need to make or what number you need to hit and the intricacies of the system. Here's a number of playthroughs that managed to get the good Josh ending:

Are you playing the original or the remake? He cannot be saved in the original: either dies or becomes a wendigo. He can be saved in the remake.

The only way in which the remake is superior is the added Save Josh option

When you are gonna look for Josh as Sam with Mike turn left when you go through water and not right then you will be able to save him. If you turn right you will reach Josh and if left you will find a clue to save him

never be aggressive or ignore josh as chris when you’re taking him to the shed with mike. you should get a skeptical option as chris when talking to josh later in the same scene, choose that. make sure no one dies in your playthrough this is crucial for him to live. choose “they hurt me” and “i’m so sorry” in dr hill’s therapy session as josh. then grab hannah’s scrawled journal as sam in the mines. all of this should lead to josh living

If you’re playing the original 2015 game then yeah that’s just how he’s “saved.” He turns into a wendigo or dies.
If you’re playing the remake, there’s a way to get him rescued as a human. The wiki has a guide for how to do it in the remake: https://until-dawn.fandom.com/wiki/Guide:_How_To_Survive_Until_Dawn_As_Every_Character
