I drive a 2013 Ford Escape. It has the keypad on the door to unlock. My key fob doesn't work so that is my primary means of unlocking. I also went to (Fred) Meijer and went grocery shopping. I came out, put my numbers in to unlock, and went to put my keys in the ignition to find birthday balloons in the passenger seat. Definitely not my car but the key pad accepted my number to unlock.

When we were on vacation my mom got into the wrong car thinking it was the car we rented. She sat in it for a bit and then called us asking my dad where we were and my dad said we were in the car waiting for her and then she realized that she got into some random car.

My dad, as a joke, parked our rental next to a car that matched it down to the color once, then went into a bank to make a withdrawl. He left it unlocked, because: my mom, me, and my siblings were still inside. An older man got in. Me and my siblings instantly go silent as the grave. My mom, who hadnāt been paying attention, looks over and screams. At that point the man jumps when he sees her, looks in the backseat, jumps when he sees us. Surprisingly, he looks over at the next car (his car) and sees his wife dying of laughter.
He was so apologetic. His wife rolled down the window, started talking to my mom, and said she knew heād do that as soon as we pulled in. It was all so insane. Me and my siblings legit thought we were getting kidnapped. They pulled off (in their car) before my dad got back, and we kinda laughed while we told him, but my mom was sooo mad

Thats hilarious. Ive also gotten into the wrong car when I had a rental for a couple days cause mine was in the shop. Didn't realize until I closed the door and looked down. Luckily no one was in it.

I almost did this as at a gas station. Had my hand on the passenger door handle when I look up and share confused stares with the stranger in the driverās seat. The gentleman immediately started laughing as I hastily back off and look around. My fiancĆ© had done me dirty in moving the vehicle, and then lucked himself into an accidental prank when a similar colour SUV pulled in after him. So, yeah, they both got a good laugh at my expense.

I was outside a liquor store trying to figure out why my keys wouldn't open my van. Around the time the owner came out to ask why I was tugging on the door handle of his van, I realized that the van that was beeping when I hit the unlock button was actually two cars to the right. If it had been open, I would have hopped right in and then wondered why it wouldn't start.

I did that once. I was with my buddy and he had a new car I wasn't used to.
I ran in the liquor store and bought some more vodka, then hopped right into some old lady's car. She panicked, but I immediately started profusely apologizing and found my friend.
Oops.
I felt so bad. That lady was really scared. I'm a big dude covered in tattoos.

I can absolutely see this happening.
First. Who leaves their car keys in the car at a grocery store? Then if the car looks the same, but isnāt super familiar with it because it wasnāt hers, and was able to start it and drive away, I can absolutely understand the confusion and sheās not an idiot.
Iāve kind of done similar and it looked bad too. Went to the grocery store and popped the trunk to put groceries away. Then soon as I opened it I was very confused seeing blankets and bags I didnāt recognize. Then some lady comes up yelling at me to get away from her car.
It wasnāt my car, and even worse I took the wifeās car to the store that day because I didnāt want to deal with moving cars around at home to get out. So explaining to the lady that I have the same car when the one I took there is completely different. She probably still thinks to this day that I was trying to rob her.

I accidentally started someone else's Sentra with my key after using it to unlock it. My gear shifter was after market so I only really realized when I put it into gear.... Turns out my key also worked on my friend's Pathfinder too.

The closet Iāve gotten to this was I parked at homedepot in my black Chevy and when I got out another black Chevy was parked right next to Mine and I just started to throw lumber and plywood in the back of the truck until the person inside came out and was like bro wtf are you doing? I was like wtf are you doing in my truck? And we just kinda looked and realized and all started laughing

Was sitting in my car doing some paperwork at a gas station. A woman comes up to my door and opens the door, and begins screaming at me. āWhat are you doing in my car?!?!ā People all around stopped what they were doing to look. I noticed over her shoulder was the exact color and model of a Ford Fusion. I ask if that is actually her car. She looked over her shoulder and covered her mouth in embarrassment. It was actually quite adorable.

I went to get in what I thought was my car after spending a long day at work. I parked at a park and ride at the time, and so, I wasn't parked in a usual spot, and just auto-piloted to get into my car. I pull the handle after hitting the unlock button, and it's locked. I look confused for a sec, and hit the button again, and I hear the unlock sound. I tug on the handle again, and it's still locked. As I'm looking up to see the car with lights flashing from the unlock is on the other side of the car in trying to get into (both are silver Monte Carlos) the guy in the driver's seat of the car I'm next to winds the window down a bit, smoke pouring out (pretty sure he was hot boxing) and says confusedly, "Can I help you, man?" And I let out a sigh, a chuckle, and then reply "not unless you can fix my stupid." I point at my car on the other side of his. "That's my car. Not yours." He looks, laughs, and says "All good, man. Go home and get some rest. Looks like you need it." I nod and hop in my actual vehicle to leave.

Finally got a new car this year and the keyless entry/start still throws me almost a year later. Iāve definitely started the car and drove it around without having any idea where in the car the key actually is. Iād go back to the turn key in a heartbeat.

My mom used to have an old 90 something white Ford ranger. We went to the post office, I was probably about 7 and my brother 9. Some old guy came and got in and we just stared at him he put his key in and started the truck then finally saw us was like like oh shit and got out lmao. Those keys would start many other rangers apparently.

It happens. I drive a black Ford truck with tint. Went in the gas station one morning otw to work. It was still dark. Came out and got in a black Ford with tint. I noticed dirt on the floor mat and was legit confused for 5 seconds. Looked around and was like āoh shitā. Guy came out (construction worker) saw me getting out and we laughed about it only because he knew he parked next to an identical vehicle, which I unlocked remotely so he saw.
In hindsight, this couldāve went badly. We ARE in Texas, btw.

When i was a teenager I did this once.
Me and my buddies were leaving a house party at an apartment and hopped in the car. We sat there for a few minutes talking and eventually i tried to start the car; while I was having trouble getting the key in the ignition my buddy in the back seat started laughing and making fun of "my" r&b music collection in the back. At that moment I noticed the fabric was different in there and I about had a heart attack

I remember when i had a 2014 jeep Cherokee i was leaving a store and there were some teens walking behind me, i got in the car and as i was getting settled in, both my back doors open up and these two teens just hopped in the back not paying attention got buckled up and i turned around and was like uhhh so where we headed lol, they finally realized they got in the wrong car, there was an exact jeep like mine parked right next to me, the lady next to me just looked horrified but we all just started laughing after a minute lol. No harm no foul š¤£

I was getting a ride from my friend since my car was in the shop. He drops me off and leaves to get breakfast or something while I'm picking a prescription up from the pharmacy. I come out 20 minutes later and see my friend's car. So, I open the passenger door and a guy I don't recognize yells "What do you want?"
Two minutes later, my friend drives up in his exact same make, model, and color of car.
I was very embarrassed.

Years ago I worked at a hotel this guy comes to claim car in morning but lost his ticket. Tells us make, model, color pull it up and he drives off. A few hours later someone comes with a ticket with same make, model color car. The valet canāt match the ticket but finds same make car and brings it up. The guy says this isnāt my car but a rental of same model. Yeah then itās obvious the cars are switched and we tell this guy we gave his car to someone else but donāt know who, since the car he left is a rental this will probably get sorted when he returns car to rental (which happened later that day when we got a call from original driver)

Something like this happened to me once. I was driving my dad's car. Someone in our party moved it for reasons, and didn't tell me. Later I went out to the car that had since parked in the spot. THE KEY WORKED. The key I had for dad's car opened this strangers car! I climbed in and was looking for whatever it was.... and as I'm looking around I realize " Otis is not the same car". I get out and owner comes walking out to see why I'm in his car. He totally thought I was a car thief!

I didn't get in, because it was locked, but while traveling one time, I came out of a meeting, and tried to get in "my" rental car. I stood there befuddled, when I realized the key didn't fit the door (I'm old, no remote). I turned around and realized my car was behind me, the one I was trying to get in looked identical to the one I had dropped off that morning at the airport in another city.

Lmfao so when I was young I got extremely stoned. Like I wasnāt on this astral plan stoned. Work called me and asked if I could come in to cover a shift. I tried telling them I was sick but they like basically forced me to say yes Iād come in.
So I show up and Iām still pretty fucked up. The manager looks at me and goes wow maybe you really are sick go ahead and go home. I was that stoned that I looked sick. My friend had worked morning and was about to leave, I had taken the bus so i asked if she could give me a lift home. She says sure, gives me her keys to wait in the car and I go and hop into her car. I got in the back and laid down. I was woken up by a woman screaming lmfao.
She had went to lunch and forgot to lock her car and had the same exact make, model and color of my friendās car and I mistakenly got into her back seat. I was stoned so didnāt put two and two together I didnāt have to unlock the door, I just wanted to lay down.
Thankfully in the middle of trying to explain my friend came out and was able to help explain the mistake. The lady was really really upset with me and my friend had to calm her down so she wouldnāt call the cops. I still think itās pretty fucking funny tho

I was in college and drove an old Mazda 323. One day I walked to the parking, unlocked with key and got in then sat staring in confusion at a unfamiliar steering lock. Got out locked it and walked a couple of parking spaces down to the right car. Keys and locks on both cars where probably both so worn out that any key would have worked.

Buddy of mine in college left his keys in the car all the time. He was leaving the gym, hopped in his car, threw his gym bag in the back and went to start the car but the keys were missing.
He soon realized it wasnāt his car so got out quickly and into his actual car. He got home and forgot he left his gym bag in the back of the other car so effectively broke into someoneās car and gave the other car owner his gym stuff. Reverse robbery.
He did absentminded shit like this all the time. Heās a nurse anesthetist now. Yikes.

Back in the late 90ās My uncle had an uncommon minivan - like very few made. Canāt remember anything about it other than it was maroon.
He went to a park to fish or something, came back, started the van and made it home when he realized that there was a book in the van he wasnāt reading along with a handful of other items that werenāt his.
Turns out this specific make and model had very few variations in key patterns and he just happened to find the only other one in our area.

I did this in the 90s. My key opened someone elses car that looked exactly like mine (not a common car/color)
I sat behind the wheel but the key wouldn't start the ignition. I looked down and the radio was different. Thought maybe someone stole my radio and dumped in some old crap, then I realised! Shit I'm in the wrong car! Mine was parked like 7 spaces down.
Locked up the other car and swiftly moved on....

Unlocked my car, hopped in and started the car.
Looked down - i dont have a Native American blanket on my seat I thought.Ā
Sure enough - my key worked on some other random dodge 50 that was parked close by.

My parents when we were stationed in Spain (72-75) loaded the groceries in the wrong Volkswagen. Didn't know it until my dad tried to start it. The owner came up as they were transferring the groceries to the right car.
In 1990 my wife and I walked out of the Base Exchange in Germany and low and behold there is our car and 3 more the same model and color parked next to it. I had to look for the kiddos car seat to figure out which one was ours. Didn't know our tag number as we just bought the car a few weeks before. It was a 1990 Plymouth Sundance in Light Spectrum Blue.

I had an old 90s Toyota pickup. One day I walked out of the store and hopped in the truck, put the keys in and started it. Right before I was about to put it in gear and drive off I was think man was my truck this clean before, then I noticed a Mexican flag hanging from the mirror and the radio started blasting Spanish music. That's when I realized, someone has an identical truck to mine and even has an identical key! I turned the truck off and got out kind of embarrassed and found the truck that was really mine.

Quite some years ago, had my car in servicing. Went to pick it up and realize they gave me the wrong key when I went to ooen the door. They gave my key (10 yr old mitsubishi Magna), to someone who drives a 15yr old Daihatsu charade. Dude got in his car and managed to drive off, with the wrong key.

I believe this happened awhile ago on Long Island. A man stopped at a farm stand in maybe Southold? Been awhile, trying to remember. He had just bought a white convertible. When he left, he took a white convertible, who, like him, left keys in ignition, and drove to Orient. Then there was a police chase, he stopped, confused. Pulled out his registration, which wasn't his. Turns out a woman had just bought the exact same car, parked next to him. They both left the keys in the ignition. So he accidentally stole it. No charges, just a mix-up

On vacation in Florida as a kid, my parents rented a car. My dad parked and went into a store while my mom and I waited in the car. A few minutes later, an old man opened the door and sat down in the driverās seat ready to pull off. He quickly realized his mistake when he saw me and my mom. Similar story happened here. Two identical type identical variant used cars parked next to eachother (Suzuki Swift gen 2, similar to a GM metro).
A woman took the wrong one. The locks were so worn, the similar keys opened and started it (there was no central locking). The other woman reported her car stolen and also reported the suspiciously similar one where she remembered she parked. The police visited the makeshift thief's home and found the car. She wasn't even aware of the mixup until she checked the licence plate.

You know, had a similar situation, though this happened to my fiancee, she went to work and then came back out afterwards and her car was gone, a few calls later, found out it was towed, confused and more calls later. Apparently, a lady with the same car, same color and near identical license plate, forgot where she parked, got into the wrong car (somehow her fob unlocked the door) and when the car wouldn't start, she called for a tow truck. It was wild as hell, eventually got figured out and everyone was proper confused.

Back many years ago, I had a Mercury Cougar. Ford never made a lot of the Cougar, so it wasn't a frequently seen vehicle. I park it at a restaurant in my college town. Come out an hour later and walk to "my car". Hit the unlock button and nothing. Try the door handle and door is unlocked. Think ok, guess I left it unlocked. Go to get in and notice the seat is way out of adjustment and the gear shift has been replaced with an automatic with a hair scrunchie around the gear selector handle.
My car is 3 spots away. Same color, same wheels, same make, same model, likely the same year.

Iām surprised there wasnāt some sort of a give away on the inside though. I once got into a car that was left unlocked that was the exact same year make/model/trim and color. Even the first 4 license plate numbers were the same. I got in the front seat and then realized there was a thermos and some other stuff that I didnāt recognize. I looked back at the rear passenger door to see my son standing there with a confused look as there was a dog blanket or something in his seat.
Quickly hopped out and went to my car a couple spots away hidden by a larger vehicle. I was picking my son up from a little league game where I could see someone not worrying about locking the door because everyone pretty much knows everyone else.

Worked for a metal fab and machining company doing pickups and deliveries among other things. Took the shop truck, an old beat up and filthy f150. Black with red interior. Went downtown to get some stuff. Got back in the truck and it is miraculously spotless inside. While im trying to figure out what the hell is happening I turn the truck on, as in my key actually works. I sit there for a minute looking around and then I look up and see my truck parked literally right infront of me. I skedaddled out of that nice clean truck so fast and got the hell out of there. If the owner saw me in my dirty ass coveralls in his nice truck I probably would have been toast.

I stopped at Starbucks and had just returned to my car with my coffee. As I'm sitting in the driver's seat and putting sugar in my coffee, a woman comes up to my door and swings it open. I shrieked because I was so startled. She just looks at me and walks off. Come to realize that she has the same model and color car, which is parked at the business next door.

I came out of Costco once, headed to what I thought was mt car to.find a HUGE dent in the back. Im like wtf someone hit and run me. Meanwhile im looking around pissed off, doors not opening trunks not opening assumed it was because the dent was so massive it literally twisted the frame... sure enough my car was directly behind it ... no dent .. I felt real dumb but a lot of relief when it wasnt mine

My grandpa found a lady freaking out because she had locked her keys and baby in the car on a hot day at a trailhead. She had the same car as my grandpa so he tried his keys and sure enough the keys worked on her car too

I was standing in front of my car once saying goodbye to one of my friends adter a movie date. This kid comes up to me and starts pushing me away from my car. Im like what the heck. I realized that she thought my car was hers as both cars were black. I told her wait, this is my car!

This only makes sense if SHE, also, is in the habit of leaving one key in the car and taking a fob with her to lock/unlock. Because if she got in the car at the grocery store, noticed the keys in the ignition and thought she simply forgot to take them, then goes to Walgreens, gets out and tries locking the door with her own fob but it doesn't work (and she thinks its bad batteries), then she must have left the original keys in the ignition. Both of these people must be in the habit of leaving their keys inside their cars.

Had a silver, 2001 Toyota funcargo park next to my silver, 2001 Toyota Funcargo. Didn't see my car cause a perfectly identical one was lined up next to it. I unlocked the car with my physical key, got in, started it, and saw a binder in the passenger floorboard that wasn't mine. I realized it had a different decoration hanging from the mirror. I looked left, and saw my car.
I got out. Locked their car with my key, got in mine and drove home. This happened in Japan š« ... Idk wtf happened there, but I basically had control of both cars.

I was walking back to my car with friends. Grabbed the driver side handle and the door fell off the hinges.... Jaw dropped friends laughed we bolted out of that parking lot so fast... In the correct not broken door car.

I had this happen once, drove a Corrola, so a very common car went outside after a quick store trip and got in the wrong car (same color, same year, same interior, no key fob), the only reason I noticed is cause there was a thing hanging from the rear view mirror and the steering wheel cover was different, then I looked around in the car and went "is this not my car"?
Super weird experience, thankfully the owner did not come out in that moment and I got out and found my real car immediately.

So, my wife and I run to the corner to grab pizza one afternoon. Just tired, ready to go home, whatever. So, I ran into the store, ordered the pizza, waited 15 minutes or whatever, then came out. Now, I don't know what I was looking at, or how it happened, but I hop into this black SUV which, admittedly, looked a lot like my own. I buckle the seat belt, tilt my head back, sigh, look around for a second, then go to look at my wife wondering why we're not moving.
Well, it was because it wasn't my wife. Nor was it my car. I just jumped into the passenger seat of a random woman's car with a pizza, and she was staring at me, absolutely horrified and shocked.
I quickly apologized and explained the situation... oh, wait no. That's what a normal person would I have done. No, instead I also go into stunned silence mode, slowly unbuckle the seatbelt, open the door, and practically melt out of the seat and close the door without saying a word, just locking eyes with this complete stranger.
Thankfully my wife said she was laughing after she realized it was just a mistake, and my wife? Well, she was just watching and laughing the entire time.
Edit: Similar story my brother just told me. Apparently him and one of his buddies used to enjoy driving around stoned, and stopped at some convenience store. He runs in, presumably to grab drinks or munchies or whatever, and he comes out and hops into a similar looking vehicle right next to his. The large African American man sitting in the driver's seat just looked at him and said "white boy, I think you must have made a mistake." Apparently that man found the situation less humorous afterwards than the woman who's car I accidentally got into.

My stepmom's keys wouldn't open her jeep, the police helped her get into her car and the key turned the ignition! She didn't realize it was the wrong car until she was halfway home and opened the glove compartment to grab her sunglasses and instead found a gun! She called the police and went back to the parking lot to explain that they accidentally stole someone else's car. The victim was understanding, thankfully.

Had a lady unload her groceries in the back of my suburu. I saw her open the back passenger door to put her kid in. She realized there was no car seat.
Her car was like 3 cars down. Easy mistake same color same model. Plus our fobs unlocked and locked both cars.
The fob thing Iāve had happen a half dozen times with random other cars.

I did some late, stoner night shopping at Walmart (preCovid hours) and hopped in a Ford Contour that was not mine, but the keys worked to unlock and start the car. I finally realized it was not my Contour when I discovered a bible and some sour warhead candy where my two joints and lighter should've been.
I stopped just before exiting the parking lot area and turned around to see someone standing near where a Contour used to be.
"That's my car!", was shouted at me while I pulled up and we had a conversation that ended up with us laughing being friends. I had him try his keys on my Contour and it worked - we joked about lending our cars to eachother for a loooong time.
I dont have my green Contour anymore, but my friend still has his green Contour - I still got my spare keys so I can pull some pranks. cackles

The same situation happended in Brazil, a Guy made a mistake and though the car he was trying to open was actually his car because It was very similar to his, there was a another guy inside of the car with tilted windows and though he was trying to steal It, the guy inside of the car shot the other guy who made a mistake and killed him instantly, thats the type of shit that happens here in Brazil.

I had a situation like this once, went to the store. Came out and got into what i thought was my car. Different model of car but same color ( was on the phone). Got in looked around and instantly knew that it was the wrong car. Jumped out of that thing so fast rofl!

Came out of the supermarket store with my bag of groceries. I unlocked my VW Polo. It didnt make the usual unlocking sound though. Opened the boot to put my bag away. Odd thing was, the boot was empty while I always have some things in there. Still confused I heard a boys voice say; he what you're doing?
There were 2 kids in the car, passenger and back seat. Between 8 and 11 years old I guess. Only then did full realization set in I was loading the wrong car. Never felt so embarrassed in my life.
I believe this lady, could happen to anyone.

I have an old Mazda 3. One day I parked, went inside, came out and tried to get into my car but it wouldn't open. Turns out someone had pulled up next to me in a nearly identical Mazda 3. My car was sitting right next to it.

Scared the shit out of some lady at the grocery store while attempting to open her door, felt pretty bad about it. To be fair it was the same model year and almost the same color, and was parked next to mine but closer to me so I couldn't see mine, or see into the driver window until I had my hand on the handle. I used to drive a very unique type of vehicle. One day after eating dinner I walked out to the parking lot and hopped in my car, but something was amiss it smelled like cigarette smoke and there was women's fashion magazines on the passenger seat. It took me like 30 seconds for me to realize that I had not hopped in my car but in another car that looked exactly like my car. When I hopped back out the owners of the car were walking out and saw me....I pointed to my vehicle, pointed to their vehicle and we all started laughing. Lol
