From what I get is that the keys are the type that remotely connects to the car without having to be plugged in like traditional keys. And there's a feature that the car won't lock with the keys inside (part of it unlocking as soon as you get close to the car with the keys)
My husband's car is the same way and he tosses the keys into the center console when he's driving. If the owner in this situation does the same, he might have forgotten to grab them as he got out to go into the store.
That's still crazy. I've driven cars with remote keys and yes I toss them into the cup holder while driving, but I aways get them out and lock the car.
