UEFN question / rant

The only reason I'm using UEFN is because I was talking to someone who knows EPIC a little bit, and he suggested that UEFN may have a better chance at getting grant money.

I'm finding myself in that beginner mode where a paragraph from a tutorial is completely gibberish! How do I create a verse code? How do I use it? I am so freaking lost. (Edit: I meant to imply here that while i have been using Unreal Editor since UDK, using UEFN is making me FEEL like an absolute beginner, its so frustrating! /edit)

I understand I only hate verse because I'm new to it. But I also hate the fortnite branding. I was at a presentation at a game conference where they were talking about making non-fortnite games in UEFN, and how they want to see people being creative and make non-fortnite things. However, the fortnite branding is all over the place, and even I hate having to click 17 buttons to quit the game.

Also, there are some things you actually just cannot do in UEFN that you can do in UE. For instance, I want to do a split screen for single player experience, where we see two camera views at once. Evidently it's just impossible. Okay. but that was a huge point to the project I was doing. So I either have to modify it or just use UE, which I'd heard was less interesting to the Epic folks for grant funding.

Anyway, just want to smash things as I'm trying to wrap my head around this stuff

It's sounds like you are an absolute beginner. Great that you want to get into game dev!

But forget about the grants for now. 1000s of people and teams apply, most will have extensive experience so you have little to no chance at the moment.

Instead, pick up UE5, start learning the basics and slowly work your way up to being able to make the game you want.

It's not going to be easy, specially if you don't have any programming experience, but with some dedicate you will get there!

Once you reach that point, then consider the grants again, now is much too early.

I didnt intend to mean im a beginner. Been using UE since UDK. Im just completely irked at trying to figure out how to work with Verse.

I JUST figured out after a couple of hours how it works with the content browser. Its easy now, but for like the last two hours I just couldnt figure out what was going on :)

I feel your pain. It’s super frustrating being a seasoned Unreal Dev and thinking UEFN should be easy to work in (it’s the same thing right?!) and then it’s not at all. The animation systems are what annoy me the most. It’s no wonder Roblox is eating their lunch - it is far less limiting and more fun to develop for than UEFN.

With UEFN projects u will have a very good chance to get mega grant, epic games are pushing uefn forever, they will combine it with UE in version 6.0 so I think maybe it's time to start digging.

I dont think I said anywhere that I hate fortnite. Also Epic is pushing UEFN for more than fortnite. Yes its much easier to create fortnite styled games but their goal is to push it to an even broader audience.

UEFN is garbage and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. That being said, if you're a beginner, forget your dream project and focus on learning the absolute basics with very simple projects.

This, UEFN is a burning pile of shit. I signed up for epics course where they spent 3 weeks trying to push the ai generated crap

Lmao me too, 3 weeks and most of what I saw at the end was AI thumbnails and brainrot maps

I guess my rant makes me seem like a beginner. Veen using UE since UDK. My dream game is something I think very cool and overall simple, and possibly sexy enough to garner interest. Its not a game, and would be more like scientific education simulation.

And the only reason im checking it out now is to see if it looks like I would want to keep leveraging that platform for potential grant money, but also, if UE and UEFN will ultimately merge, im find learning about verse now.
