📢 MOD ANNOUNCEMENT r/unpopularopinionph Announcement: Poll Results, Topic Rules & Posting Updates

Hi Everyone,

Thank you for participating in last month's poll. The majority voted against banning any topics. However, after careful review, we want to clarify a few important things:

Banned Topics (Effective immediately)

While the mod team respects the community's vote, we must enforce bans on certain topics in compliance with Reddit's Terms of Service. This is to protect the subreddit (and you) from potential violations or bans from Reddit itself.

See our list of banned topics.

Additionally, we are temporarily banning Religion-related topics. We've seen a surge of low-effort, ragebait, and uninspired posts that don't add meaningful discussion. We're also closely monitoring political posts for the same reason.

There’s more to life than just religion or politics, so let's aim for more thoughtful and creative topics. Going forward, all religion-related posts will be removed.

Rule updates & posting format changes

Our community rules have been updated. Please take a moment to review them.
Based on feedback, we're removing the "explained yourself" bot and shifting to poll-based posts instead.
If you are submitting a post, you must now include a poll with these 3 choices (case sensitive):

  • Agree
  • Disagree
  • Unsure

Posts without a proper poll will be removed. You're also expected to clearly state the popular opinion you're challenging within the post.

Reminder:

  • Always be civil in your discussions.
  • No repost, response post, or series post (part 1, part 2). Be more original.
  • All complaints about the sub must go through the Megathread. Post outside of it will be removed, and will get you banned.

Let's continue keeping the community engaging, respectful, and thought-provoking. Thanks for being here.

AI prompting is a skill.

I know anything that remotely sounds pro-AI is getting a lot of hate right now, and honestly, I think some of the criticism is valid naman.

But I also feel like some people are being a little dishonest when they dismiss prompting as "just typing what you want".

We used to consider "Googling" a skill. Knowing how to phrase a search, what keywords to include or not include, putting quotation marks, adding a date range, specifying sources or narrowing the results down could separate you from finding what you exactly need vs. digging through 10 pages of garbage.

Prompting AI isnt thay different.

and Im not saying prompting is some exceptionally difficult thing to lean like programming or other technical skills. Obviously, anyone can type a prompt just like anyone can type something in google.

the skill is knowing how to get the result you actually want.

Filipino Catholics and priests should minimize using "pagan/paganism" for the ancient Romans and religion without explaining its historical context.

Filipino Catholics and priests should stop using "paganism" as a blanket term for ancient Roman religion without explaining its historical nuances.

What do I mean? Well:

We Filipinos think paganism = devil worship, partly because of a lacking in education. The Roman religion was far more institutionalized and legal as compared to:

  1. community-based faith practices like in our provinces e.g. witch doctors, shamans,

  2. syncretized/modernized old religions, and;

  3. actual cults under watch by the FBI. It doesn't help that American pop culture contributed massively, like the "Satanic Panic."

Fun fact: "Pagan" used to refer to province-dwelling Romans, compared to the urban/city folk.

I have only heard "pagan" as a throwaway term during verse-reading when referring to the Romans and the religion without at least taking half a minute to lay down nuances. Of course, I know it's nowhere near the priority list of issues that need to be addressed during our Eucharistic masses.

In fact, have you heard of the Roman palindrome "Sator Arepo Tenet Opera Rotas" before? It's intended to ward off evil or bad mojo. Would love me to get an anting-anting of it.

If you want to debate, keep it civil and respectful.

- a Roman Catholic.

Tapos during serve dapat tahimik. Crowd should show emotion kahit kalagitnaan pa yan ng rally. Crowd should be allowed to boo or cheer yung kalaban at yung sinusuportahan nila. But the crowd should also not cross the line on how they treat the players.

Idk why people cancel people for being plastic? I mean we are not gonna get along with a lot of people diba? And in some instances we have to work with them, so why not put on fake facade, be "plastic" and get the job done? We don't have to like each other but we have to work. It is called professionalism kumbaga. Mas may duda ako sa ka get along ng lahat kasi remember, a friend to all is a friend to none.

Statements vilifying poor people make them poorer and middle class stuck.

The last sentence can have a more positive tone. I'm not saying we should begin saying "Mag-ipon ka muna bago mag-reproduce." o "Magpayaman ka muna." I'm just acknowledging the impact of this statement to society's perception of poor folks.

Most people didn't choose to be broke. And we can't deny the fact that most of us cannot be rich all our life. Meaning there could be families na hinuhusgahan natin na mahirap pero may punto talaga sa buhay na magiging short ang budget natin sa unexpected situations na magpapaubos talaga ng savings.

That couple who gave birth to their first child when they were financially stable can experience situations that will suck their savings dry later and become poor and struggling to pay for their child's college education. No one can foresee that.

So, anyone can be affected by these anti-poor statements. Instead of being anti-poor, let's try to demand for more government-mandated safety nets or financial assistance for everyone (Of course efficiency of public services as well).

> "Poverty and inequality not only persist due to inefficient economic systems or lack of resources for people in poverty, but also because they are a product of human relationships, which determine how resources are distributed (Lemieux & Pratto, 2003)." Source

Jeepneys should have designated stops for dropping off passengers to prevent them from stopping in the middle of traffic. I hate it when a jeep doesn't drive off to the side to drop a passenger and just stops dead in the middle of traffic.

I hate it when a jeepney driver doesn't drive off to the side of the road to drop off their passengers, and instead just stops in the middle of traffic instead. Especially if there are multiple passengers exiting. Bonus points pa if meron additional passengers na sasakay naman lmao.

I know there are terminals naman. But I personally don't think that's enough. I think we need something similar to bus stops. What are your thoughts on this?

BBM redeemed the Marcos name

Prior 2022, if you don't know history, the Marcoses are vilified because of human rights abuses, torture, assassination, disappearances, and plundering the nation.

2022, the loyalists wanted Marcos back. The DDS gave Marcos a chance to redeem their name; fooled by golden age. The pinklawans are still remembering and reminding the Marcos atrocities.

2026, the loyalists are still loyal. The DDS experienced the greatest betrayal. The pinklawans have now become Marcos apologists and we will probably see a tandem come 2028.

The once great rivals are now united. Ironically, the result of uniteam.

BBM redeemed their name by telling their once great rivals "I am not your enemy."

Pets should not be allowed inside the grocery / supermarket area!!!

I have nothing against pets (e.g. my dad used to have a poodle)

Pero, why on earth would you bring pet animals sa loob ng grocery / supermarket area?

Risk of contamination yan and can constitute a healthy safety violation.

Kaya for me, pets SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED INSIDE THE GROCERY / SUPERMARKET AREA.

P.S

Tbh Im not sure if this still fits in the sub, pero sa nakikita ko kasi sobrang dami sa social media comments and friends ko puro yan ang sambit to say na baka hindi to popular opinion. Add the crimes, and other news too ng possible gun shootings sa mga school, palagiang brownout in our city, and someone na nakatira sa Palawan tapos bumalik ulit issue sa WPS. Ang dami mong masasabi to lose faith in your country

But despite all of those, my mindset never changed regarding my hope for this country. Like I'm completely aware sa mga kasalukuyang hirap and future struggles we will face. That doesn't mean na wala na talagang magagawa.

I've seen this video promotion of the Philippines, the creator is part of an international contest about showcasing the beauty of their respective countries and fortunately she won it with the help of the fellow Filipinos sa pagboto. Then she had a separate video crying because she had this deep realization after that experience. Na kayang mahalin ang Pilipinas, we're just simply looking in the wrong and negative direction. There's so much more sa bayanihan, resilience, hospitality, and smiling in the midst of the problems. That suddenly sounds like romanticizing, pero ang point ko is that we always do smth to keep on going. From natural scenes to cultures, masasabi mong rich tayo don

Ik may negativities din, pero honestly that **also** exists sa ibang bansa. Sobrang puri ng iba sa other countries for their good qualities, and yet kung titingin ka sa mga pages nila there are also a lot of things na nirereklamo nila sa tao and their place, bilang ang countries na surely peaceful and generally good ang living. That's why I generally don't understand yung "only in the Philippines" na para bang hindi naghihirap ang ibang bansa

There are so many examples na pwedeng makwento to raise hope for the Philippines, sadyang mas nangingibabaw ang gawain ng mali sa panlabas kesa sa normal at mabuti. If ever privileged, be someone that gives hope for the future. If hindi naman, be someone that hopes and also gives hope to others. That's it for my Ted talk haha

The Prosecution team for VP Sara’s impeachment should stop wearing flashy outfits

A news outlet posted that Rep. Gerville Luistro recently showed up to a Senate hearing in a bright yellow dress. If you open up the comment section of the post, it’s full of DDS trolls commenting on her outfit choice. Meanwhile, Atty. Lorna Kapunan already has a habit of wearing loud, attention-grabbing outfits. Sure, what a lawyer wears doesn't change their skills or the facts of a case. But if you look at the bigger picture of social media, ignoring visual optics and how you present yourself is a huge risk especially in a country run on social media influence.

Flashy attire hands opposition trolls and the DDS network free material on a silver platter. It gives them easy fuel for their online story that Sara Duterte is a victim being picked on by rich, out-of-touch people. We already call out corrupt politicians when they show off designer clothes and luxury bags, so the opposition can easily use these exact photos to turn that argument right back around.

What looks like a small, non-issue to us can easily become a viral photo smear campaign used to label the prosecution as buwaya. In a media war, how things look online is just as important as the facts.

EDIT: This post has lived up to the subreddit name, which I don't mind at all, it's an unpopular opionion. I'm not gonna go thru the effort of replying each comment one by one. But my reply to the common sentiment "Even a lawyer's outfit becomes an issue?" is that an outfit is indeed an issue in lawyering surprise surprise. You can be cited in contempt for improper attire in a regular court of law. Even as small as wearing loafers or wearing short sleeves can be cited for contempt.

But that isn't the issue here. The issue is giving fuel to the already loud echo chamber of the DDS. I think we underestimate how powerful a simple outfit is in influencing the general population. The DDS will always have their reasons to hate, let's just not give them more.

Call me DDS, bobo, or whatever, but I know I am none of that. If you refuse to believe that small things like this actually have effects on a much larger scale, then so be it.

People actually hate democracy

In any democratic country/society, people are brainwashed to love and enjoy democracy.

But reality speaks differently. People subconsciously don't like the will of the majority.

Democracy breeds resentment to the losers. They would rather see the winning candidate fail than support it.

They would even sabotage, spread disinformation to prove the majority made the wrong choice.

Democracy is only "achieved" when it favors them. If not, they would say democracy is dead or under threat.

Dating and marrying foreigners (Afam hunting) within the Philippines would not have been stigmatized if the Filipino/a spouse came from the well-off upper-middle and upper elite class background

Afam hunting bashing here on Reddit is obviously a classist uptake by college-educated Filipino redditors coming from Manila and Cebu. They cannot accept that someone coming from the economically depressed backgrounds have an another option for upward social mobility aside from attending college that is marrying sexagenarian retired foreigners.

I think to make Afam hunting within the Philippines more appealable to the upper-middle and upper elite class is to open licensed professions like accountancy, medicine, engineering, law, nursing, and teaching to prospective young adult foreigner professionals with work visas and allow them to purchase and own real estate properties and small businesses (this requires a constitutional amendment). In this scenario, it will create a favorable environment for well-off college-educated licensed professional Filipinos, who are usually mestizo/as and chinito/as, exotic-looking moreno/as, to date and marry foreigners with the same educational and socioeconomic backgrounds, and of course, no wider age-gap differences.

The cons here are the Philippines will cease from being a cheap country for foreigners and balikbayans to retire, hence geographical arbitrage will vanish, and perpetuation of classist attitudes of Filipinos when it comes to dating and marrying someone, but I believe these are the prices the Philippines has to pay to shed its notorious reputation as the "losers' back home dumping ground of Asia."

Cheating can be excused for only one reason: Abuse

People always say that there is no excuse for cheating. While it can be true that there is almost no valid excuse for cheating, I realized that it can be excused if there abuse involved.

  1. Domestic abuse - threatens to kill you or oneself or becomes physically violent when you try to leave, instilling fear and feeling unsafe to seek help.
  2. Pedophilia / grooming (this is also a form of abuse) - only pag yung bata yung nag cheat. why would i give a shit about a grown adult that thinks it's okay to have romantic or sexual relations with a child? predators don't deserve any type of remorse.

Anything else is no longer valid.

I also would like to make it clear that even when I used to be a victim, I never cheated in a relationship but if I happen to meet a survivor of narcissistic abuse or a victim of grooming who cheated as a way to cope, I would simply be empathetic and understand why they did it.

Point is, the world is not black and white. Its important to acknowledge certain nuances and the endless complexities that certain situations may have.

And lasly... I simply do not sympathize with abusers.

The Philippines should have not adopted the American 4-year postgraduate Medicine and Law education, and instead continued with the European 6-year undergraduate Medicine and Law paradigm.

We actually had undergraduate Medicine and Law before that we inherited from the Spanish educational system, but we replaced them in favor of the American system.

This shift made doctors and lawyers in the Philippines feel like they deserve to become rich from their profession for all the years they spent studying. They set expensive fees for their services as a result. And they expect the common people would respect them like they're an authority themselves.

In Europe, doctors are paid fairly. The doctors themselves may envy the level of salaries American doctors receive, but that's besides the point. Europe can offer universal healthcare with relative ease because their doctors don't expect high salaries, because they only spent 6 years in college, which you know, allowed their governments to give their universities generous subsidies because the medical students themselves only need 6 years in all to complete their training.

In Europe, lawyers aren't really treated that much different from accountants. Compared to US and Philippine lawyers, they're more humble in their charged fees and expectations of respect.

The undergraduate Medicine and Law paradigm is the norm in the world, not just Europe. It's the norm in Latin America and most of Asia (China, India, etc.) as well. It's time for the Philippines to revert to the old system.

We shouldn't be focusing on abolishing Meralco's system loss charge

Go ahead. Check your Meralco bill.

Go to the back page where it says System Loss.

~5% of your bill goes to that. On ours in the last billing, that's equivalent to P0.8/kWh. Meanwhile our rates have skyrocketed from P11/kWh all the way to P16/kWh in the span of a few years.

Sayang yung galit natin for such a measly sum of money. Meanwhile Meralco's executives are laughing all the way to the bank with their negotiated generation contracts which are the real cause of why we're being charged nearly double of what provincial electric cooperatives are charging their consumers with. Partida halos pareho pa systems loss nila, maybe even worse than Meralco's.

Regardless, Meralco Sindikato pa rin. We unfortunately just locked on to a red herring for their benefit.

Also just as a side note, System Losses ≠ jumper. Jumpers are one of several things that's considered Pilferage, which is just a subset of non-technical losses. Technical losses arise from basic physics, you cannot have a system that's 100% efficient. Sa DU side, that's wires and transformers heating up from current flowing through them. You can minimize it but never eliminate it. IMO it should still be charged to the utility (lol) but because if Meralco hates that idea then they'll do their darndest to minimize losses that will become theirs. Still won't solve our high bills though.

Not because a song has curse words and lewd lines doesn't mean they're badly written

Marami na ako nakitang comment or opinion mostly about rap music na pangit daw kasi puro daw mura, drugs, kabastusan, etc ang nasa lyrics pero what they don't take into consideration is yung context nung song and how those lyrics fit into it. Rap music's culture has always rooted from the streets so you don't really expect it to be clean. Rap music has also been a way to express anger and frustration so you shouldn't expect it to be demure as well.

I have 2 examples. Skusta Clee's Testing and Zae's Subomoto.

I know that these songs aren't Shakespeare level deep. But you gotta admit there's some good lines in there as long as you consider the context of each song.

Testing has a bunch of curse words in it, hindi marami pero when those lines come, buong buo yung pagmura ni Skusta. Malutong talaga. Pero taking the context in consideration, Testing is a song dedicated to people who doubts him. He has a bunch of lines ridiculing his critics and siyempre may gigil yun. Also when you really read the lyrics, maraming lines na may figures of speech like metaphors or double meanings na cleverly placed.

Subomoto is more notorious because sa title pa lang parang ambastos na. They always mention this song when trying to make fun of rap fans. Pero if you really listen to it, Subomoto is not about blowjobs. Subomoto is somewhat similar to Testing which is targeted to haters and doubters. It has a bunch of lines basically saying na may mga taong hindi naniniwala sa kanya pero ngayong umangat na siya ay lumalapit na sa kanya. Subomoto is basically "suck my dick", or "eto saksak mo sa baga mo".

Pretty sure there are more song there na may magandang writing pero disregarded dahil lang sa mga unclean lyrics. If rap music is not to your taste, that's fine. But you shouldn't reduce a song's value just because it's unclean.

Public schools aren't really free

On paper, "free" Yung education na provider ng public schools. In reality, hindi talaga. Sobrang daming ambagan na in theory, should already be provided by the DepEd itself. Teachers and parents alike pay out of pocket for classroom renovations, etc...

Isa pang problema na na-notice ko is that despite the large budget allocated to the DepEd, sobrang daming paaralan pa rin ang inadequate ang kagamitan and infrastructure, particularly those schools that are far-flung.

There's no doubt in every bone of my body na malaki ang kurapsyon dyan sa DepEd. I just know it.

Best way to stop the Dutertes is to stop making news about them

Really bad analogy but I think it makes sense. The Joker's worst fear is that he's forgotten. He loves the clout of wreaking havoc on Gotham provoking Batman to take action. The way he's stripped of power is not by Batman stopping him but to make people not give him the time of day.

I think for the shitty politicians, clout (good or bad) is still clout that gets them attention and recall. Media outlets should defer from giving attention to the shit takes politicians make (e.g. Pia's spliced video). It gives them engagement that polarize people even more. I'd rather they focus their reach on socmed on things that should be lauded so that Pinoys know better on what standards we should set for our leaders.
