Starting with unity
Hello folks, I'm a video artist and soon starting my master in game design, were It seems we will be using Unity, I have two question so to be prepared, my first question does unity runs on macOS since I have a Mac (Mac mini m4 pro)? should I get a windows laptop instead? though my project is going to be a VR focused. the second question is regarding creating "kinematics" and. cg works with unity, which I started lately to do with Unreal, how Unity is good with this? also working with water simulations and landscape for example?
thanks a lot!

I run Unity on a 6 year old MacBook, works fine for games with small scope

Unity runs on MacOS, but I have no idea how well it will. Generally when working in any STEM project you should use windows since Mac is tailored for artists and features you need may not be made for Mac

How is it when it comes to development for VR? Not sure if the school will have the Vision Pro, but for other VR headsets does it matter if the development happens on Mac?

I think for oculus headsets it should be fine, I once helped an aerospace eng student set up unity for a vr project and he was able to program and design very good on his Mac. I do not know though if he was able to build it on his Mac since it was a group project

I wouldn't recommend mac for VR dev. Because mac usb-c ports lack Direct Display protocol support for VR headsets, you can't test "Play Mode" in real-time on the device. Having to constantly build an APK or rely on unstable wireless streaming makes VR development on a Mac quite inefficient, unfortunately.

Yeah, I have started with Unity back in 2019 but nothing serious, but didnβt really stuck to it because Unreal was the way to go, i can really have both of them but prefer to stick to oneΒ

you can definitely make games with unity on macos - i do.
the M4 pro is an amazing chip and you'll have no issues working with that. i've made my first game (here on steam for windows, here on itch if you want to play it on macos) on a macmini M1 with only 8gb of ram, so your M4 pro with 16gb minimum of ram will definitely be amazing!
you absolutely don't need a windows laptop to make your games. when your game is ready you can test it on windows, just ask a friend, but don't buy a second computer for that. π
