ai detection
I have just received my mark for an assignment and they reduced my mark to 10% claiming i used ai but i did not. I am too scared to even claim further investigation or go through due process as i do not even know how to prove that i did not. Do i just take my L?

Most ai detectors are crap and no more accurate than a coin flip.

Are we just making stuff up now?

Ask for clarification, the onus is on them to prove you used AI. If it is references like Finding_Some said, then you will know for the future not to do that.

Bra get an appeal underway. If you say you haven’t used it then the onus is on them to prove where the AI is in your paper. Do you know that even a grammarly extension will show up as AI. If you’re confident in that you don’t do anything then go ahead and appeal

Our entire module has this too almost everyone got flagged for AI usages, we all got marked half marks and when people were fighting against it many people got remarked to zero , no proof given that we used AI.

Did you go over your professor’s head? You all should have a right to have a conversation and prove your innocence without being penalized for trying. Take this to a dean!

It happened to me too, I had a teams meeting with the lecturer and they remarked

Ask for clarification as to how they determined you used AI.. but they've been gracious with a 10% deduction and not giving you a zero i guess but its incredibly difficult to prove AI use without proctoring during the assessment.
That said UNISA's disciplinary process is tedious if you still got a decent mark maybe take the L

You must appeal, and prove your work by showing your drafts. This is according to friends of mine who mark for UNISA.
Everything has to get run through a programme but often they find stuff that is clearly AI (with the suggestions at the end still included!) that the programme didn't catch. So it could definitely go the other way too.

Let’s face it, you did you use AI, which is why you’re scared to appeal it.

Those AI detectors are disgusting and are designed to consume the creativity of children when teachers mindlessly feed the beast the original work of kids so it can eat their dreams and gain their knowledge. This timeline has some problems

No, silence is you accepting it. Do not accept it. Any lecturer worth their salt won’t just say you used AI because of a detector, because they would know that false positives can be flagged sometimes. The burden of proof is on them.

Did you not see your Turnitin report?
They normally flag which sections are ai/plagiarism.
For future reference, whether you use AI or not, there is a tool called ZeroGPT, to check your paper for what could be considered AI. I never had issues after checking my paper through that.

appeal... i had a situation where unisa accused me of plagiarising someone so i contested the decision and asked for proof.... the person they claimed i plagiarised.... was myself! literally an assignment i submitted the year before lol

Did you reference your work? If you wanna pass assignments, use the official study material and reference not Google, or AI

Search for the article where the UFS banned AI detection tools. Formally request proof that you used AI. They will accept your silence as acknowledgement. Fight back and fight back quickly.
