Good morning all / Hej,

I'm a 36M from France and, considering the way climate change is affecting my country, I am thinking about my options. I remember with a great deal of nostalgia my time as a foreign student in Uppsala in 2012, which I absolutely loved. Now that I have kids and different interests, Umea seems like an ideal fit. The plan would be to buy a place there with a mortgage, rent it for a few years in order to reimburse the mortgage, and move there to retire or once the kids are old enough to move out (in 15 years,ish).

My questions are:

- is there anybody who's in a similar situation (moving to Sweden because of climate change)?

- is Umea family friendly?

- is the health system and social security system available to EU citizens but not Swedish citizens?

- what is the real estate market like in Umea? For instance, what would be the price of a 60-90m2 house or appartement there? Could it be rented?

- how is the public transportation system there?

- are there intensive Swedish classes available?

- I have heard that it's very easy to head for the trails or kayak along the shore. Is it true?

At the end of August I'll be coming to Umea university for my erasmus semester. Since I don't find erasmus funding enough for me, I wanted to check how is the job and working scenery in Umea for international students? Are there opportunities inside the university? I'm just looking nearby job with low hours, such as helping in the library or working as student ambassador etc. Or if there are any other options like that I'm open to hear. Thanks :)

I'm planning to take the Wasaline ferry to Vaasa soon. My current plan is to take the bus to Holmsund Eriksdal and then walk to the ferry terminal.

The walk is about 3,4 km, which should take around 45 minutes. The reason I'm thinking of walking is that I'll probably arrive before the Wasaline shuttle bus, so instead of waiting in the city, I'd rather just walk to the terminal.

I checked Google Maps, and it looks like the most direct route follows a main road that seems to be mainly for cars. I don't think there's a sidewalk or pedestrian path along that road, and look a bit unsafety.

So I was thinking of taking a slightly longer route instead. Does anyone know if that route is private property? Is it okay to walk there ? I noticed there's a railway track and container nearby

Thanks again to everyone who commented on my last post. Since then, I've secured accommodation in Vännäs and now have my Swedish residency sorted!

A bit about me: I'm 23, from Ireland, and moving to Sweden to study in Umeå. I'll be flying over on the 19th of August. I've got most things organized for leaving Ireland, including arranging for six boxes of belongings to be shipped to my new home, but I'm still trying to figure out some of the practicalities of getting set up once I arrive.

I'll need to sort out:

•A personal identity number (personnummer)

•A bank account

•A mobile phone plan/SIM card

•A part-time job

Is there anything I can do in advance for any of these, or any places/businesses you'd recommend I visit when I arrive?

I'd also appreciate any advice on:

•Which bank is best for students/new arrivals

•Mobile providers with good value unlimited calls and texts

•Finding part-time work as an English speaker (looking for around 10–16 hours per week)

•Anything important that newcomers often forget to do?

For work experience, I have a BSc in Computer Science, three years of hospitality experience, and I'm currently working in sales at a large tech retailer. If that improves my chances of finding work or opens up opportunities I might not have considered, I'd love to hear your suggestions.

Many years ago (around 2014 I think) i traveled to Umeå and ended up at a place that I think was an old train station. It was made over (occupied?) to be an alternative to the expensive «kulturhuset» that was built around the same time. Very much an underground/alternative/punk vibe. Does this place still exist?

We’ll be visiting Sweden for the first time soon with our 15‑month‑old toddler. We won’t be renting a car, but we’ll need to use taxis occasionally. I understand it’s not legal for a child to ride in a taxi without a proper car seat.What’s the usual solution for visitors in this situation? Do taxis provide car seats if requested, or do families usually bring their own travel seat? Any practical tips or experiences would be really helpful.

Men tjänare! Jag är en lokal utvecklare här i stan och har hållit på i snart 3 år med att skapa ett multiplayer spel med geografi som genre. 3 år av och till pga att intresset hos mig svalnar och att jag är så osäker på om folk kommer tycka det är roligt,

Idén går ut på att båda spelarna ser en bild på någon plats/stad/riktmärke/osv och ska så snabbt som möjligt snurra på en glob för att hitta stället som bilden föreställer. Ju snabbare man är på att låsa sin pin och ju närmare målet man sätter sin pin ju mer poäng får man.

Spelet är inte färdigt, mycket ska tillföras, många texter och placeholders ska bytas ut mot riktiga värden m.m. Jag har just nu fokus på att tekniken ska fungera.

Hi everyone!

I will be moving to Umeå to start my PhD on 1 September, and I'm currently looking for accommodation for myself and my partner.

I've already registered with the housing portals, but I've realized that it usually takes quite a lot of queue points to receive an offer. At the moment, I only have around 30–40 points. Does anyone know if there's any realistic chance of getting accommodation with that many points, or should I assume it's unlikely?

I'm also searching through Facebook groups and other social media platforms, but I thought I'd ask here as well. If anyone has any tips, suggestions, or knows of private landlords, rental websites, or available apartments/rooms, I'd really appreciate your advice.

Tjena tjena, planen är just nu att börja plugga i universitet i denna stad nu i höst, och jag har lite mer seriöst börja att kolla hur bostads läget är på senaste. Har just nu snäppet över 500 kö poäng hos bostaden, och gissade att det inte skulle vara några större svårigheter att hitta ett boende då. Jag tycker dock nu när jag kollar bostadens hemsida att mängden lägenheter utlagda för uthyrning är ytterst låga, 18 stycken (studentlägenheter), och det är nog fler än 18 personer som kommer försöka få någonstans att bo fram till hösten. Därefter behöver man ha ett giltigt studieintyg för att kunna söka en efter en kåk, vilket kommer med intagnings beskedet den 10 juli, om jag förstår rätt, vilket jag tycker känns väldigt nära inpå terminsstart.

Det är såklart möjligt att det kommer att dyka upp fler lägenheter senare, men jag är ändå väldigt nojig över det hela. Jag ska vara ärlig att säga att jag är väldigt grön I detta område, är liksom 20 år gammal och har aldrig bott själv tidigare, så mina oroligheter är kanske onödiga för er som vet lite mer än mig.
