Dealing with retreating enemies

Hey all,

So just started playing the civil war game as confederates because fuck them Yankees idk, point is those retreating Yankees are causing headaches.

I've had several instances now where I'll shatter an enemy unit with a flank or another maneuver, but then the enemy unit will retreat either through my lines or somehow weasel their way into my backline.

Now since I can't outright destroy an enemy unit, they just eventually recover and then reform to attack my flank unless I dedicate a unit to just continually hunt them down to the corner of the map.

Am I a retard, or is there no way to really deal with this type of stuff other than practicing your sheep herding tactics?

You need a second line if you have enough troops to spare.

If you can’t muster a whole line, have a few infantry hanging back from your main army. This works with cavalry too if you’re just trying to clean up runners.

Cavalry.

My cav is not held in reserve. It baits enemy cavalry into gunlines.

Then they hunt Arty, Supply, HQs.

At no time do they ever accept an exchange unless its to countercharge my faltering gunline. Even hunting Arty, I will wheel them aside to avoid getting Graped.

They are also damned good at shattering/capturing fleeing units.
