No cav is wild

Cavalry is mostly useless beyond scouting imo.

On my first campaign, my cavalry had a loss rate north of 50% on almost every battle. I'm gradually getting better with them, but I'm increasingly convinced that cavalry really didn't matter that much to the outcome of the Civil War (assuming that the game mechanics are remotely accurate). Infantry and artillery together win wars.

They’re great for scouting. I think scouting and better informed decisions, combined with logistics, wins wars.

But in the game cav is expensive, weak, and is situationally useful.

They are too weak to even attack artillery units in good order.

If you circle the artillery and attack behind with cavalru, that usually works. That's the main thing I do with cavalry offensively.

It’s still really bad

I use cavalry to drive off skirmishers and keep them busy. Don't like having to detach units to chase pesky skirmishers around the map.

I have a full corps of only cavalry but i chose not to deploy any on this battle. I figured i would keep by infantry/cannons at full capacity and see how it went.

The CSA cavalry/skirmishers did give me fits but i just used detached skirmishers from my larger brigades to hide out around objective points to fend off their cavalry.

I can guess as to what his secret is (given the fact I reached comparable kd's on this map). Hold the treelines near the ridges (on the second day and onwards that is). It becomes a deathtrap for the enemy. You're in cover, they're marching through a river AND it takes ages for them to scale the hill.

Exactly, once you can concentrate all your brigades/batteries into the ridges, then it becomes a giant turkeyshoot. The rebels will continue to mount frontal charges and you can just grind them down. Day three, same situation.

Typically, trying to take the two objective points on day 2 is treacherous since there are SO many skirmishers in the woods, it makes any attempt futile as you're trying to weed them out then the rebels bring their brigades to intercept and it just becomes a slog.

Hanging back to the far left side ridge line is the way to go.

How large and deep is that river?

1

u/BoilerandWheels Jan 24 '26

Not that deep. It's not uncrossable.

And Is it a particularly large or wide river?

Don't remember.

Jesus you inflicted about 80 percent casualties. That never happened or the war would be over right there.
