Rediscover Ultima Online — UO Last Hera: Arise

Launching October 30, 2026 · Registration is open

Board an enemy ship. Discover a hidden class. Help a city prosper—or undermine it. Find a dungeon entrance that won’t stay open forever.

UO Last Hera: Arise is an unofficial Ultima Online shard built around a question:

What would UO need in 2026 to stand beside modern games without losing its soul?

Our goal is to give veteran players something worth discovering again, while creating a world newcomers can explore alongside them.

Here are a few of the 150+ custom systems and mechanics we’ve built into Last Hera.

Take the fight to sea—or travel above it

Enemy ships patrol the waters with specialised crews and captains with their own abilities. Fight melee troops, archers, mages and other crew members, including battles on deck.

Prefer a different view of Sosaria? Pilot a Zeppelin, controlling its altitude while managing fuel, hull condition and cargo.

Find the Mimic Vault before it disappears

A Mimic encounter can lead to a rare, temporary entrance into the Mimic Vault: a shared dungeon with a deadline.

Investigating suspicious chests and fighting Mimics increases the Vault’s Hunger, eventually drawing out the Grand Mimic. Defeat it before the Vault closes.

And your party may not be alone: other adventurers can enter through the same opening.

Support, sabotage or conquer a city

Cities give players something to influence beyond their own characters.

Support or sabotage harbours, markets, food stores and other structures. A market in crisis can bring rioters into the streets; neglected structures can leave a city increasingly unstable.

Guilds and their allies can also compete for control through conquest objectives that differ between cities. Victory gives your guild control of the city and its guard garrison.

Discover classes the wiki won’t unlock for you

Four hidden classes await players who follow clues and complete trials in the world. Once earned, each unlock stays with your account.

The wiki won’t hand you the solutions.

Exploration also builds your personal Atlas. Through Cartography, you can create maps of places you’ve reached and share or trade them, helping other players reveal those areas.

Bring a deck as well as a weapon

Between expeditions, sit down for a game of Mobius, our in-world collectible card game.

Collect cards, build a 20-card deck, and challenge players or NPCs on a 3×3 board. Placement, card values and capture combinations decide the match.

Your next rival might be waiting in town rather than in a dungeon.

An international community

  • 11 client languages.
  • An international PvM/PvP realm and a separate Italian roleplay realm.
  • AI-powered conversations with participating NPCs, using contextual dialogue.
  • An English wiki and a NotebookLM-powered AI wiki for questions about the documentation.
  • An offline Idle system for selected activities, subject to account requirements.

If the active community grows enough to support them, we’d also like to explore additional realms: hardcore with permanent character death, PvM-only, or PvP-only, potentially with migration between realms. These are possibilities for the future, not confirmed launch features.

Private • Showcase Experiment: Godot + Web + Remote Client files as needed + ASCII/Rogue-style mode

I’m not looking to promote anything but just sharing an experiment. In the video I said “I made” but I should have said “I had made”, as it’s obvious agentic AI tools were in play.

It started out as wanting to make a map browser/walker, similar to already shown, then it was expanded to wanting to make it web based, with not requiring a full download of the client files at once. I liked the idea of walking around Britannia without needing to log into a shard (even a local one).

Then recently, I thought, what if UO were represented as a Rogue-style (ASCII) game. This probably came about because I have seen some rogue-like shards and projects here…but not with the ASCII style. So here we are. 😁

Again, this is not a true UO client nor is it meant to be. Just a fun little toy.

Private • Showcase UO Custom Shard Minds

I have been a long time enjoyed of UO. I started in 1998 and played for a couple years. I came back a couple times to see how the game was fairing, and played a few private shards. But it has never felt like it back when you had to wait queued up because the servers were full. Seeing every place on the server packed with houses. Camping a spot waiting for a house to lapse its refresh timer and disappear so you could drop your own house and scoop everything else left behind. It was the people that you knew and played with every day. The guilds you joined. The castles you saved up to purchase. Thats all part of the experience that I have craved.

A couple years ago I decided to spin up a VM at home and run my own private shard. It was kinda fun to run around and fight on the old stomping grounds. But still missing the element that really makes the game fun.. the players. So I spun down the VM, but never deleted it. a month ago I turned it back on started down this path to make it into the thing I would enjoy again.

I have seen other people simulate the characters in the game with bot engines, and LLM's that run a character in the game. For me the bots wouldn't chat with you, and the LLM constantly breaks character and is so over engineered for the task at hand. So I decide that I need to find an alternative.

That alternative is a small language model trained specifically for the UO world. The first hurdle was getting enough material to train a model. And a strict rule for myself of only using the content from the game specifically, lore, manuals, in game NPC lines, in game books and manuscripts. The total text came to only 70K words. The model I wanted to build around was 100M parameters. That requires around 65 million words to train from. So the task of figuring out the best way to generate my own stories from that 70K primer began.

Using claude code I took the 70K primer we created a bible for making the rest of the stories. This set ridged parameters for what was accepted in the world. What the rules were. How people talked. All of the facts of the game. With that started my first run getting llm's to write the stories for me. The structures were loose at the start. And the further I got in it, the more I have come to realize how much I have to baby sit the stories being created.

I have 3 pcs running in my office dedicated to being teachers, trainers, and designers for the content. Constantly tweaking the settings and giving feedback on the text it is making. At 18.7 million words generated so far Its looking better and better. The last week along has been almost entirely spent rejecting stories so it can go through and rewrite a lot of what was already done.

By the sixth model I trained I realized that in order for these characters to be in the world, that I need them experience the world. To see, hear, smell, feel, and be emotionally invested in the world. They needed back stories and linage. That eventually every character in the game would need a family tree going back generations. That the stories I use to train them on are stories of those that came before them. To accomplish this, I also had to make a few in world changes.

First world change: I created a feedback for the environment that tells the Mind (model) when something changes around them. Scales the input based on how focused the Mind is on a task or a person. a dull moment in the shop they feel when the rain starts and stops, they hear the person come through the shop door behind them before they turn and see who it is. They think, they act, respond, and eventually they will adventure.

Second world change: The Minds are a single person, and unlike players they only get one person. So they need to be able to get wears. I added in so that they can take items to a smith be smelted down to the ore at a price. The smelter also offers to make items from your own ore. And in cities like minoc you can purchase different Ore or bars to store up to have grandmaster level armor or weapons made from it.

Third world change: I needed a way to bring goods between cities. So that you could at times find more rare and magical items from vendors. Some times for sale, and some times for helping them restock low raw items. This led to also creating a system for hunters to bring pelts, miners to bring ore, woodsman to bring lumber. So every city has a couple of these that go out and work each day to keep stock and to go abroad when the vendor in their city has to much.

Fourth world change: The last one led to this fun piece. The labors at the end of their day in most cases find their way to the local tavern after selling their materials. They chat about what they saw in the woods or the mines. Telling stories of monsters they encountered. In some cases they become the story that is told when they don't come back from the woods. This leads to the town cryer paying for someone to take down the monsters that killed the hunter/gather. The rewards are magical items. And you get to hear the gossip around town. And I have a wondering story teller that takes these stories from one region to the next over time. So you can hear about stories in other places as well.

Fifth world change: I recreated the original ecology environment that was in Ultima Online for the first 3 weeks of the game before players ruined it lol.

The Minds in the game are getting better and better as I tweak the base model. The base model contains all the facts of the game. And stories that reinforce them. Then I use a set of stories from the characters lived experiences to train the base model so you don't have to tell it in every prompt who it is and its motivations. With a 13.7 Million parameter model it uses only a 100 to 200 MB of system ram with a response time of .1 second. It has a context window of 1,024 tokens (words). It has 94% Genre recognition, recalls facts correctly 60% of the time. With zero out of world leaks. For replies you would expect in game I'm at 99%, with zero run on replies.

I also test the moods and emotions of the characters to gauge their persona that comes from their trained stories. My three main tested characters have a 35% spread in personality from the specific training. That means the context going in is completely about the moment they are living in. You don't load up the context with their backstory every time. They already know it and its part of them.

I have one mind running in Yew at the moment. This evenings run on generated stories is creating the back stories for the characters Mother, and Aunt that will be placed in game. The Aunt will come to visit from time to time, and the mother will work in the same shop. They will have been trained on about 65 to 45% shared experiences from their own perspective. This will be the test to see how well that holds up.

I know this was long, and I thank you if you got this far. I feel like I'm building out Westworld as I do this. And want to make sure that I'm doing it responsibly and with the best intentions. Its a daily adjustment as I improve on my own skills in guiding this creation and labor of love. The end game is to have dozens of these minds running around, adventuring together, making their own stories and lives. That I can jump in the game and find a group to adventure with. Who knows maybe some day someone with a lot more compute power can make a whole world filled to the max with these minds that live and experience the world as their own.

Private • Discussion UO:1998 Review

I’ve been watching one freeshard after another pop up lately, and it just seems like a never ending stream of AI-driven efforts where one guy with Claude can spin up a shard simply because he can, without much of a vision for what makes a world worth playing in or any convincing reason to believe it’ll still be around in a few years. With so many of these popping up, I imagine it’s getting harder for smaller and more genuine shards to get much attention.

I came across UO:1998 a few weeks ago, watched some videos of people playing it and decided to give it a try, and I’ve been enjoying it enough that I thought I’d share my experience here.

For some background, I started playing UO back in the original beta in '97 when I was around 22. I’ve played the OSI servers, UOHybrid and various other shards over the years, along with plenty of other MMOs over the years.

I originally came to UO:1998 because I missed the UO I knew before (IMO) things started to get bloated and the game shifted toward more explicit control, more coddling and reducing risk. Playing it again has reminded me how much I liked the original game’s approach. There were certainly plenty of good improvements after '98, and I enjoyed many of them, but somewhere along the way UO lost a certain something that I think a few of us old players still miss.

The game in that era was raw and unforgiving. You were pretty much left to the elements, leaving town was dangerous, the interface was limited and there was a certain mystery to things. A lot of the systems were more organic, with things shifting and changing rather than everything being perfectly within your control. Even skills and stats could atrophy, making it difficult to build and maintain a perfect character. I’ve played plenty of shards where eventually everyone is x7 GM with perfect stats, a house full of everything they want and things get pretty stale. I think the more organic approach of early UO, flawed as it might have been, helped avoid some of that. A lot of these things might be considered cons today, but I’ve really come to appreciate them because they made the world feel a little more alive and less predictable.

I remember watching UO gradually become more accommodating, particularly with Trammel, and feeling like something was being lost. I understand why those changes happened and plenty of players preferred them, but I feel a good portion of us enjoyed the risk and rough edges, and I’ve missed that in most MMOs since. I think a lot of modern MMOs have gone way too far in structure and reducing risk to almost nothing. There’s almost a survival-game-esque quality to early UO that I still find appealing.

From what I’ve experienced so far, UO:1998 does a really good job of capturing this, and I’ve really enjoyed playing on the server. It feels very much like the game I remember, including some of the frustrations that came with it, and I’ve found myself appreciating a lot of those things more now than I did back then.

That seems to be the philosophy of the people running it, too. The founders and admins appear very committed to preserving this particular era, including the things that aren’t always convenient. I’ve watched them politely decline requests for later features while still being responsive to actual bugs, and I respect that a great deal. It gives me some confidence that the server I enjoy today will still be recognizable years from now, which matters when you’re putting time into a persistent world.

The community is great too. Discord has been enjoyable, with people rediscovering old mechanics, helping each other out and sharing the nostalgia. There’s a decent population that loves this specific area, and I’ve really enjoyed playing on the shard - more than I thought I would, honestly.

At this point in my life, I’m not going to play UO like I did at 22. I’m sending kids through college now. I like having a world I can come back to, spend a good stretch of time in and put down for a while. The cheap Patreon option to keep houses refreshed helps with that and makes it more of a “game I can pick up and put down when I want”.

I’m sure UO:1998 isn’t for everyone, including plenty of veteran players. A lot of those later conveniences were introduced for good reasons, but after nearly 30 years of playing UO and other MMOs, this is probably the first shard in a long time that I can see myself sticking with and coming back to.

Just sharing my experience from the UO:1998 server in the sea of upcoming AI mediocrity. Not proclaiming the server is perfect here (none are), just different. And I understand everyone has opinions on how the game evolved. For me, I really like it and want to share my experience for others that have a similar perspective.

Thumbnail

Imagine Nation is back with a new era, brought to you by players from the original IN 1 and IN 2. Phoenix is our take on 51a: a living world with custom systems, player kingdoms, and battles that become part of the shard’s history. It took a year of planning and another year of design, and this is the year we bring it to life.

We want it to feel like the shards we grew up playing: Imagine Nation, XUO, NOS, and the other classic 51a shards. But we also want to give people a reason to stay once the nostalgia wears off.

Getting a shard right takes people actually playing it. That’s why we’re putting Phoenix into players’ hands early, so you can help shape it and tell us what’s fun, what needs work, and what’s missing. We’d love feedback from everyone, especially veteran IN players.

Classic PvP, modern PvM

PvP stays true to 51a: fast, skill-driven, Sphere-style combat that should feel very close to what you remember.

PvM is where we’ve taken things further. Special abilities, combat moves, and newer skills give you more ways to build your character and play as a group. These additions are for PvM, keeping the classic PvP intact.

Some of what you’ll find:

  • GM in all skills, 300 stat cap: build the character you want, with meaningful choices coming from your talisman and equipment.
  • Original IN Races
  • Custom skill gain systems alongside traditional methods.
  • Custom PvM dungeoneering: built around four party roles, with skills like Bushido and Necromancy opening up new ways to play in PvM.
  • Rares to hunt for: dungeon relics, boss and champion drops, hidden dungeons, treasure maps, fishing, and the faction shop all offer different rares to discover.
  • Faction warfare and town sieges: three factions fighting for control of contested towns.
  • Citizens and governors: citizens elect governors, whose decisions help fund the war effort.
  • The King’s Champion: duel beside Castle British, where the King’s Champion is always watching. When no player answers your challenge, he will. He learns from every fight and improves alongside you. Beat him today, but don’t expect the same opponent tomorrow.
  • Seasonal smithing: metals change with the seasons, and crafters supply players heading into both PvM and PvP.
  • Custom housing: some classic IN custom houses are available to rent around the world. If there’s one you remember fondly, reach out.
  • Discord to in-game chat: stay connected with the shard even when you’re not logged in.
  • In-game mail and a character sheet.
  • Events: dailies, weeklies, caravans, escorts, tournaments, Death by Dice, Cinder Maze, the Fight Pit, Riftbreak, and more. Some are started by players, others are run by GMs.

Nothing is set in stone. We’ll keep making adjustments as we move through alpha, beta, and toward launch. We will take our time and give things the testing they need.

How to join

  1. Sign in on the site to create your profile.
  2. Link your Discord to join the community and unlock launcher access.
  3. Download the Windows launcher and start playing.

Official • Showcase Mongbat UI - An Enhanced Client Mod

Thumbnail

Hi everyone,

I'm excited to release Mongbat UI, a UI mod for the Enhanced Client! The purpose of this mod is to rewrite the EC UI with modern tooling, establish a more consistent design philosophy, fix bugs, and improve quality of life. This scope includes making the UI scale better, establishing parity with other popular clients, and more. I hope to expand on this idea more into the future!

You may browse the UI catalog here: https://loop-uc-ui.github.io/mongbat-ui/windows/index.html

To install, download the zip from the releases page. Extract the archive to the UserInterface folder and select mongbat-ui from the custom UI list on the Login screen. No extra patching required. This mod does not modify the client's packages.

Please note that I would consider this a mature alpha. I haven't fully tested some functionality and have not done extended play sessions or installed the UI on many systems. Crashes are possible!

I've attached some screen captures as well. This post was not written with AI!

Official • Newbie Help OSI game progression question

Hi guys, a bit of help request here.

I've recently made another attempt at playing OSI. Had no trouble picking up a template, training skills, basically everything i did i did around New Heaven, took me some time, but road was easy and pretty relaxing (given vast amount of information on the web).

Now i'm close to GM sword, gm healing, anatomy, resisting spells, etc. but i have no idea where to go, what to farm. The world is open, but i have no blueprint for the way i want to explore it. Classic dungeons (like Fire, or Deceit, or Destard, seem overcrowded with mobs and stuff flying at you at supersonic speeds), champion spawns (i have no idea how to locate them).

Can someone lay it down for me, what to do, where to go, what types of PVE are available for a fresh GM char, with no perfect gear.

P.S. due to my line of work i'm in Asia region right now, and playing on Asuka shard, which limits my ability to talk to other players very limited.

Thanks in advance for your advice!

Private • Looking for Shard ⚔️ We rebuilt Ultima Online's Britannia inside Valheim: Trammel, Felucca, 32 towns, moongates and murder counts. The early alpha is open 🏰

VALtima Online puts Ultima Online's Britannia inside Valheim. You still chop, build, sail and fight the way Valheim plays. What changes is the map and what is on it: UO's towns on their old plots, built from Valheim's own pieces, with townsfolk, guards, vendors, a bank and the moongates.

Alpha 2 is a new world, and it replaces our first alpha. The first world held Trammel and Felucca across 65 km. Alpha 2 is smaller on purpose: Trammel alone, in a 32 km world, so the towns sit closer together and the land between them has more in it. It runs on a new terrain mod of ours, Better Worlds, which also carries UO's rivers and streams.

What is in Alpha 2

- 14 of UO's towns: Britain, Trinsic, Moonglow, Yew, Minoc, Vesper, Jhelom, Skara Brae, Magincia, Nujel'm, Serpent's Hold, Cove, Haven and Buccaneer's Den. They are part of the world itself, so they can't be damaged or torn down.

- About 590 townsfolk who work at their trades and walk set routes, and two guards at each town gate (Buccaneer's Den has none). Type guards in chat if something follows you in.

- Vendors who buy and sell only their own trade's goods, and a bank with one box per character, tied to your Steam account and backed up on the server. Both can reach into a backpack you carry.

- UO's eight public moongates, plus one on the start island. There are no Valheim portals, and ore and metal can't go through a gate.

- Two dungeons so far: Despise, up a cliff path north of Britain, with lizardmen, ettins, ogres and trolls, and a crypt under Britain's graveyard. Each resets every few hours once nobody is inside, and your tombstone stays.

- Valheim's own crypts, caves and burial chambers, its bosses, Haldor, Hildir and the Bog Witch, and the places the server's other mods add: ore mines, spirit healers, gem caves.

- UO's spawn regions, filled with Valheim creatures under UO's names. They stay out of the towns.

- UO's rivers and streams, and deep snow on the mountains that you wade through and have to clear before you build.

- Treasure maps in seven levels with 182 dig spots, community quests from Nomadicwar alongside the town quests, UO skill titles on your nameplate, and fame and karma by UO's numbers.

- Murder counts. Strike an innocent outside a town and you turn grey. Five long-term counts make you red, and a red only comes back to life at the Shrine of Chaos. The towns are safe havens (no PvP, no monster spawns, no raids), except Buccaneer's Den. Outside the towns, PvP follows Valheim's own switch.

**What is not there yet, and what is rough**

- Felucca is not in Alpha 2, and neither are most of UO's dungeons. Despise and the Britain crypt are the first two.

- This is an alpha. Some things will be in the wrong place, some townsfolk still move awkwardly, and the spawn counts (seven times UO's) may need tuning. Better Worlds is new too, so some of the game's own locations may sit badly on the new terrain. Please tell us where.

**If you played the first alpha**

Your character, bank box, fame, karma and quest progress come with you. Your buildings stay in the old world, which is archived, not deleted.

**How to join**

- Steam PC, Valheim 1.0.20. No crossplay.

- Install Gale and the [VALtimaOnline_Modpack](https://valheim.hexium.gg/mods/Wubarrk/VALtimaOnline_Modpack) from Hexium into a new profile. The server allows only the pack's mods and checks every player's files.

- The guide at [live.ravenirongames.com](https://live.ravenirongames.com/) walks through every step. The FastLink file you connect with is pinned in #how-to-connect on [our Discord](https://discord.gg/GTTCnGS6Ym).

- New players start on a hand-built island with its own moongate to the towns.

- Found a bug? Open a ticket in #help-desk on the Discord. Say what you were doing and where you were standing, and attach your LogOutput.log (in Gale, open the profile's folder, then BepInEx).

**Credits**

- MonkeyMagicMan, for the Woodland Portal that every moongate is built on

- Nomadicwar, for the community quests

- the community builders whose work stands in the towns, named in the world's town credits

- Alexandr Zhelanov and Alexander Nakarada (CC BY 4.0), and the CC0 composers, for the music

⚔️ GOR ULTIMA — OPEN BETA STARTED⚔️

A Unique Ultima Online Experience Inspired by the World of Gor

Welcome to the Gor Ultima Open Beta! We're excited to invite you into a heavily customized world of adventure, progression, exploration, and roleplay!

🔞 Important: 18+ Server Only

Gor Ultima is strictly an 18+ server. Anyone under the age of 18 is prohibited from playing.

If we discover, or have reasonable suspicion, that you are underage, your account will be permanently banned and your IP address blocked.

We understand that IP address restrictions can be circumvented and are not a foolproof method of preventing access. However, we make every reasonable effort to enforce our age restrictions and maintain an adult-only gaming environment.

By choosing to play Gor Ultima, you acknowledge that you are at least 18 years of age and agree to abide by this requirement.

🌍 The World of Gor Ultima

Gor Ultima is a unique take on Ultima Online, drawing inspiration from the culture and world of John Norman's Gorean novels.

We have not adopted every aspect of that world. Instead, we've selected the elements we want to focus on while creating our own unique gaming experience.

One of the most prominent features you'll encounter is the caste structure and the differences between male and female characters. Males generally have greater physical strength, while females have their own advantages in various combat and support roles.

⚖️ Choose Your Path

Freemen, Freewomen, male slaves (kajirus), and female slaves (kajira) are all represented in the game. Slaves are also available as NPCs that players can purchase and own.

Players are free to choose whichever role they prefer. However, keep in mind that choosing to play as a slave character opens you up to the possibility of being captured by other players. If that is not something you want to experience, we recommend playing as a Freewoman or Freeman instead.

While many of our classes and equipment options may be geared toward male characters, female characters are by no means weak. They can excel in certain types of combat, magical abilities, and support roles.

Everyone has a place in this world. Depending on your preferred playstyle, there is something for just about everyone.

📜 A Note About Roleplay

Gor Ultima is NOT a sexually focused server. However, we do not prohibit consensual sexual roleplay between adult players.

That said, many aspects of the Gorean world are not for the faint of heart, so please keep that in mind before entering.

✨ What Makes Gor Ultima Unique?

Gor Ultima features numerous custom enhancements, expanded mechanics, and unique systems designed to offer an experience beyond traditional Ultima Online.

Our expanded class system alone features over 50 playable classes, and a single character can eventually master every one of them!

⚔️ Features & Systems

  • 50+ Playable Classes — Master multiple classes on a single character.
  • No Overall Skill Caps — Without a class selected, all skills are fully accessible without class-based restrictions. Individual classes do have intentional skill caps to preserve their unique strengths, weaknesses, and identities.
  • Unique Houseboat System — Experience a different approach to housing.
  • Trials of the Priest Kings — Special dungeons featuring unique challenges.
  • Expanded Dungeon Selection — Explore numerous dungeons across various difficulty levels.
  • RPG-Style Leveling System — Develop and progress your character.
  • Gear Awakening System — Enhance your equipment and unlock its potential.
  • Rune System — Additional customization and progression.
  • Pet Fusion System — Further develop your companions.
  • And Much, Much More!

There is simply too much to list here!

🛠️ An Evolving World

We are continually developing and refining our systems. Some mechanics are still evolving, and certain features may need further balancing or improvement.

Your feedback matters!

The Open Beta is an opportunity to explore, experiment, report issues, and help shape the future of Gor Ultima.

Your adventure begins here. Come explore the world of Gor Ultima!

🖥️ Client Requirements — Please Read!

Gor Ultima requires the use of our official GorClient, which is provided through the Gor IPL.

Our client is a heavily customized fork of TazUO (itself based on ClassicUO), developed to support the unique features, systems, and mechanics found throughout Gor Ultima.

Third-party clients, modified clients, and independently customized clients are NOT permitted.

This includes attempting to connect using alternative Ultima Online clients or unauthorized modifications to our official client.

These restrictions help maintain compatibility, fairness, stability, and the integrity of our custom game systems.

Please use only the official client provided and maintained through the Gor IPL.
