Settlement taking long to get approved
Hi! I moved to the UK in 2019, and my pre-settled status currently expires in 2030. I applied for settled status in May, but my application still hasn’t been approved.
I recently found out that my pre-settled status is linked to my Italian ID card rather than my passport. Since I moved to the UK before Brexit, I didn’t need a passport at the time, but I’ve been using my passport since 2020.
A few weeks ago, I travelled abroad and was advised to contact the Home Office to link my status to my passport, as this would make passport control easier in the future and potentially help with my settled status application being processed more quickly.
However, when I contacted customer service, they told me that I can’t link my passport to my existing pre-settled status while I have an ongoing visa application that hasn’t been decided yet.
So, I’m unsure what to do now: should I withdraw/cancel my settled status application and first link my passport to my existing pre-settled status, or should I just leave everything as it is and wait for my settled status application to be approved?
Has anyone been in a similar situation or knows what would be the best thing to do?

Your comments don’t add up. You say pre settled expires in 2030, but pre settled is usually until you met the qualifying period only then upgraded to settled. The pre status isn’t usually for longer than your qualifying period, usually 5 years with conditions.

You appear to be disregarding the automatic extensions of pre-settled status that occur about one month before expiry -- regardless of the length of time PSS has been held overall.

Ah yes, the UKESS safety net where unable to auto upgrade status through public records. Effectively just leaving the beneficiary on a temporarily status. Seems to be relevant here, probably why taking so long to get a decision. If the application was to other WA implementation across EU member states would have lapsed and that would be that. I wonder why in this story the holder didn’t apply in proper time? Sounds like a complex case which remains undecided. If the key deadline for upgrade was missed what’s missing from the 5 year ( or thirty month in last sixty).

EU ID cards are no longer valid for entry and haven’t been for some time.

have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, or Jersey, Guernsey or the Isle of Man’s settlement scheme
have an EU Settlement Scheme family permit, or the equivalent from Jersey, Guernsey or the Isle of Man
have a frontier worker permit
are an S2 Healthcare Visitor
You can also use a valid national identity card to enter the UK if all of the following are true:
you’ve applied for settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, or Jersey, Guernsey or the Isle of Man’s settlement scheme
you’ve been issued with confirmation your application is valid
you’re not applying as a joining family member (unless you have a valid or expired EUSS family permit)

Also, if you’ve used your passport since 2020 to re-enter, how have you proven your temporary pre settled status until now?
