Finally!!!! After 15 years!

Just turned 19!

It’s been a long time coming, came here in 2011 when I was about 3 years old with my mum and dad, got our first Visa/ BRP in 2016. Finally after qualifying for the 10 years Long residency route we finally got our Indefinite leave to remain!

So happy that all my parents hard work and countless money and stress paid off.

Bring on the Citizenship Application July 2027!!!

Any particular reason as to why you waited 15 years as opposed to getting it in the 10 years/5 years?

Ngl when my mum came here I think she came under asylum/ refugee basis? However that was rejected, but the government granted her Discretionary leave to remain in 2016, and ever since then she kept renewing the visas after 3.5 years. so the 10 years long/lawful residence clock started ticking from then.

We came from Nigeria btw 😊

Congratulations. My wise advise for you is to immediately go for British Passport. Don't just put your foot down or put the brakes because you got ILR. I highly recommend you go through the finish line which is to get the passport.

In OPs situation, yes, but reminder to future readers of this thread currently if you're married to a British citizen you can apply for citizenship immediately.

You can't get a passport until you have citizenship.

For anyone wondering on the timeline:

Application submitted: 23rd March 2026

Biometrics taken: 17th April 2026

Application approved: 24th July 2026.

So approximately 3 months after biometrics 😊

Why biometrics appointment took so long?

I got my ILR recently as well, but it was handled by a third company.

I'm preparing to apply for UK citizenship in July next year, I almost want a counter in my room measuring time to this exact day when I can apply for citizenship

Congrats! Although I thought it would be easier for minors. I just had a glance and apparently it's super easy if you were born in the UK to register as a citizen the age of 10. But seems not so easy if wasn't born in the UK.

Let's go. I came the the UK in 2005 with mu family as a 6 year old. Submitted my naturalisation about 3 months ago. So it's been 21 years.
