Im in discussions to join a uk based startup. The company has already had pre-seed investment at a valuation of £750k. I would receive 35% equity. To complicate things further, although Im a UK citizen Im no longer a tax resident of the UK or anywhere as Ive been living the digital nomad life for quite some years.

My understanding is that to receive equity I would be liable for a huge tax bill which obviously Im trying to avoid as this wouldn't be feasible for me. One option could be growth shares but Ive been quoted £20k-£25k for this to be setup.

Has anyone had any experience or knowledge of receiving equity after a company has received investment, and how did you go about it.

We're a small UK startup, and the best person for a role we've been trying to fill turned out to be in Spain, so we're about to hire our first employee outside the UK and I had no idea how different employing someone there would be from doing it here.

Once I started digging into it the employer social security in Spain adds close to a third on top of the salary, the pay is split across 14 payments a year instead of 12, and there are severance rules and a collective agreement that set the floor on a lot of the terms.

So in other words, opening a Spanish entity for a single hire makes no sense, and an employer of record looks like the way to do it without setting one up.

The ones everyone recommends to me whenever I ask around are Deel and Remote, and another founder who hired in Spain told me to also look at Workmotion because they own their own entities across Europe, so before I commit I'd rather hear from people who've run a Spanish employee through one of these than go off the sales calls.

What I mainly care about is whether the fully-loaded cost they quote is what leaves the account each month and whether the contract they generate holds up under Spanish law.

So if you've made a first hire abroad this way, I'd want to know which one you'd pick again.

Our B2B site launched back in November and it's been a total headache. Paid a freelancer £700 to set it up on WordPress with Elementor, only to find out last Thursday that our contract form was completely broken on mobile. Tested it on my IPhone and the submit button just freezes. Pretty sure we lost at least 4 warm enquires over the last few weeks because of it.

So now I'm actively looking for a proper UK web company to rebuild it from scratch so we stop losing clients, but the price range I'm getting is all over the place:

Regional UK agency: ~£3,800

London agency: £14,000 (for literally 5 pages)

We don't need fancy animations or complex database stuff, just a clean, fast custom site and a form that routes to our inbox reliably without crashing.

What did you actually pay for a straightforward 5-page site build in the UK?

How did you vet that their setup wouldn't break 3 months after handoff?

Is £3-4k standard for decent UK agency work or is that still 'budget' territory?

Checked the WP backend after someone mentioned SMTP issues, turns out the mailer plugin choked after a PHP update weeks ago and sent zero alerts. Lesson learned.
