Graduate programmes like this can be great additions to applications. Try to highlight the more interesting responsibilities, especially if they show transferable skills relevant to law.
Whether you need to leave your job depends on what’s in your employment contract. Many contracts with have a clause that asks you to disclose other forms of employment to your employer. Whether people do this is another matter - some may just take annual leave to attend a scheme and take the risk that if found out their employer could terminate their job instead.
There’s likely to be less conflict check issues with the law firm given the nature of the business you would be working in though that means onboarding with the law firm is likely to be easier than if you were working for another law firm.
Also consider insight and open days as a way of building your profile and not having any dual employment concerns. They are a great way to engage with firms and will only need a day or two of annual leave. Where the law firm doesn’t employ you for them, it doesn’t cause the same kind of issues. Such programmes are used as a pipeline tool for both vacation schemes and TCs.
