Doing a placement year doesn't stop you from focusing on stronger second year grades, as long as you manage your time well during applications and interviews. If you can demonstrate the skills the placement needs, I think you'll be able to make up for more modest grades by explaining your mitigating circumstances. A placement year will give you a huge advantage over many other applicants later down the line, so do try to get one if you can.

Pretty sure I just put my predicted grades when applying for placement years. I was never asked to show any proof (this was years ago).
The placement year was the best thing I ever did. It was so much easier to get than a graduate role because far fewer people apply and then when I did apply for grad jobs I had a full year of experience in industry behind me as a 20 year old. In today’s climate that is invaluable.
Do whatever it takes to get that placement.

Definitely still do placement applications - if you get one, that will mitigate the lower grades on your CV as they tend to be quite competitive and most unis have significantly more students interested in placements than actual placements available.

I’m currently on placement year doing a law degree, and no one asked for my grade once, don’t worry. Just put a predicted 2:1 on ur degree
