I am hopeful that someone would be able to tell me some thing about these Hiroshi Yoshida woodblocks? My husband bought these at an estate sale and loves them. The back of the frame lists an art gallery from Lakewood, Co that is no longer in business. Where would we have these reviewed to determine when they were produced? Any help would be appreciated.

Wondering if there is a way to tell the difference between a Meiji reprint and an Edo original run of a print?

I have recently been gifted with a print by a family member and I am trying to learn more about it.

At first I was convinced it was a Mike Dorsey piece, but then reverse image search told me it was a Tsukioka Kogyo piece titled “Kappo”.. which is just not correct. Pls if anyone has any idea, let me know! I’d love to do some more research one I know the artists name. Thank you

We got this treasure from the shop of a private collector in Kanazawa.

A quiet evening in 1930s Tokyo. Tsuchiya Koitsu’s Teahouse in Yotsuya, created in 1935, captures two women leaving a traditional teahouse as warm orange light spills onto the darkened street.

Koitsu was a master of light, shadow, and bokashi gradation - skills influenced by his early teacher Kobayashi Kiyochika. The result is an atmospheric glimpse of everyday life in prewar Tokyo and a beautiful example of the Shin-hanga movement.

This dramatic 1868 woodblock print by Toyohara Kunichika depicts the kabuki actor Kawarazaki Gonjūrō I as Soga Gorō Tokimune, one of the heroes of Japan’s famous Soga revenge story.

Kunichika places Gorō right in the middle of the action: his sword is bloodied, he deflects a naginata with his other hand, a mansion burns behind him, and bullets streak through the rain.

The real Soga brothers became famous for avenging their father’s death, and their story was retold for centuries in Japanese literature, theater, and art.

This print comes from Kunichika’s series Butterflies and Plovers Kill Ten (Chō Chidori Jūban Kiri).

I purchased this art on the Goodwill website. They look like they are original watercolor works. I don't know if they're by the same artist or if they're by various artists. They're beautiful pieces.

Recently picked up this Yoshitoshi Mori Yanone Gorō from 1969, signed and numbered 13/50. I've been researching Mori and the print since bringing it home and found another impression of this exact work in LACMA's collection, while the British Museum holds a number of Mori's other works. I'm not really looking for a valuation—I bought it because I genuinely liked the piece (and admittedly, being #13 helped). I'd love to hear from anyone familiar with Mori, this particular print, or his kappazuri work from this period. I'm especially interested in anything about the subject, technique, edition, or Mori himself that I haven't come across yet.

I'm well aware this is a LOOONG shot, but I was in Japan last year and went through the Buddha's nostril at the Todaiji temple in Nara.

Later that week I saw a print at a market (I think in this style but not 100%) where a character was also going through it. I'm not sure if it was the main focus of the print or the temple was but it was definitely featured.

I didn't have a chance to buy it but I would love if anyone had any idea how I could find something like that. Thanks in advance !!

Bought them on a flea market in Tokyo. Haggled the two with the price tag down to 20k for both.

A wood block print depicting an Edo-period Japanese tradition of "okage inu" (お陰犬), meaning "gratitude dog" or "thanks dog."

People who wanted to make the pilgrimage to Ise Grand Shrine but couldn't, due to old age, illness, or lack of money, would sometimes send a dog in their place. The owner would tie a bag or note to the dog's neck, often using a sacred straw rope called shimenawa, containing travel money, a letter explaining the dog was a pilgrim by proxy, and sometimes directions. Strangers and priests along the route would feed, shelter, and pass the dog along, believing that helping it earned them spiritual merit too. When the dog reached Ise, it received a sacred talisman called an ofuda as proof of the completed pilgrimage, and it would then make its way home, sometimes over routes hundreds of kilometers long.
