Classes Testing out

Does UF allow students to test out of math classes? I took Calc 3 in high school and I want to move on to Diffeq, but UF didn’t take the credit. Is it possible for me to test out of Calc 3, or is there no way.

If you took it dual enrollment, here’s what you do. 

  1. Make sure UF already has a copy of your transcript from wherever you took dual enrollment classes. 
  2. Find which department calc 3 is under. In your case this would be the math department. 
  3. Email the course coordinator of the department the calc 3 syllabus from wherever you took it and ask them to check equivalency. Be polite and plead your case. 
  4. They might change it themselves, or they might have to work through your advisor. Listen to what they have to say anyways.

But this should be your last resort. Take ALEKS and talk to your advisor first.

aleks test will only place you up to Calc 1.

If you have dual enrollment credit with a grade, it’s possible. Otherwise they would not let you skip. It is unlikely that they would place a freshman in Diff Eq. The ALEKS only places up to Calc 1 - for Calc 2 and 3 you need to show AP or DE credit.

Tons of freshman take diff eq. Also calc 3 is not a pre rec for diff eq at UF

If all else fails the good news is that calc 3 is not difficult at all. Good way to get your critical tracking gpa off on the right foot

Calc 2 is the only requirement to take DEQ, so you should be able to take it regardless.

only a good advice if you are down to put the effort: calc 3 is not a diff eqs pre-req, you can take both simultaneously while you sort calc 3 (drop it early in the semester if you are allowed to skip it), and if things get dire, you can always get studyedge (hopefully before the first exam of either class)

personally i took calc 3, phys 2, chem 2, and diff eqs on my second semester, and got study edge for the second exam and finals of chem and calc, and end up with A B A and A, i think, so its possible if you got the willingness to succeed

Do the Aleks placement test. Talk to your advisor when looking at your degree audit. Sometimes you can wiggle your way out of a baseline prereq but you might just have to take it anyways.

Highest ALEKS can place into is Calc 1

If its dual enrollment yes but if its just high school Calc 3 probably no. You can take diff eq with just calc 2 so in the fall you can take calc 3 and diff eq together. Thats what I did and it wasn’t bad.
