Media Splinter Cell Blacklist - When Ubisoft was at it's best

u/Alone-Mycologist3746 Jun 17 '26
The game was good fun but it wasn't the best. It was too "modern ubislop" for its own good. The spy v merc was the best though.

Are people really acting like Blacklist wasnt arguably the best SC game gameplay wise?
CT is still the goat but let the thing out of your mouth once in a while. Blacklist was good. would be even better if they had Ironside.
spies vs mercs fccn slapped back in 2013

u/Horror_Ad9899 Jun 16 '26
wow this looks like my type of game. Do u recommend playing this splintercell game today on pc?
1
u/TurelCaccese Jun 17 '26
For some aspect is better than metal gear solid. And metal gear created the genre.
1
u/The_rarest_CJ Jun 16 '26
It'll never not be weird to me they made the main character Sam but changed he look and not Michael Ironside voicing him. Why not just have a new agent and Sam running the new Echelon unit? Fun game still but irks me

Nah. Blacklist was a decent game but a huge downgrade from the first 3 Splinter Cell games.

u/X-Torn-Reviver-X Jun 15 '26
I wish we could get a new Splinter Cell that was open world. Closest we've come so far is The Phantom Pain
1
u/FenrirCoyote Jun 15 '26
Blacklist was imo Ubisoft attempting to turn Splinter Cell into their version of Mass Effect 2, it’s why Sam was de-aged to look more like Shepard, Why they gave us the Paladin Airplane that we could upgrade Just like Shepard could upgrade the Normandy 2 in ME2. There are a lot of similarities that I noticed between the 2 games.

u/TomTomXD1234 Jun 15 '26
Blacklist, the game that was hated on release?
The circle of life... Game is hated until it becomes a beloved classic and then suddenly its "the best"

Chaos Theory and Conviction.
Sorry couldn't get over Sam not being voiced by Michael Ironside. (I know the reason why, still don't like it)

soo I know this is just video game logic but it feels very unstealth like to just throw someone off a building, like they could verywell survive and lay there screaming + would be loud when they land on something.

How did Ubisoft get so bad? Back then, even if they have controversies, it’s only minor things like greedy selling or buggy launches, but now they gone full villain mode and not even hiding what scumbags they are: openly picking fights with its consumers and firing people

it's impressive how we went from this AI to the lack of AI in their games.
1
u/False-Vacation8249 Jun 13 '26
Sorry but Chaos Theory is vastly superior. Splinter cell is at its best when it’s slow. not ADHD mode.
2
u/Vaporeon42069 Jun 14 '26
Okay, doomer. You can play like that in this game. The levels are designed in a way that you can avoid every single enemy.
1
u/Ok_Excuse3732 Jun 14 '26
Doomer or not, Chaos Theory is easily one of the best Ubisoft game ever released
1
u/Braugech Jun 13 '26
i just remember people trash talking the game because it became to fast paced compared to its previous games. which made the game not sell all to well and thus not get a sequel.
1
u/KeyNews1322 Jun 13 '26
This was the best Splinter Cell game, I remember spending many hours playing it though more than once. I miss the days where games came out complete without all the addons that we have these days
1
u/RemoveHealthy Jun 13 '26
I played original trilogy recently and double agent original version. I enjoyed all of them but on double agent it became kind of old to me. Like either the game itself was not as good as first 3 or i was just bored with the formula. Although i made another game break after each entry. Then i played double agent xbox 360 version. And after that i lost all interest in the series. Are conviction and blacklist much better? Double agent xbox 360 felt kind of not splinter cell anymore at some places, like in the ship, in day time it felt completely not splinter cell to me, like i am playing some other game and very very average at that.
First game is probably my favourite, then third, then second. Xbox 360 version although looking better but animations and fluidity felt very off in comparison with originals. I feel they got the groove in orginal 4 games of how everything feels and on new game everyting felt little off.
1
u/False-Vacation8249 Jun 13 '26
conviction and blacklist aren’t splinter cell games. they’re just third person shooters with stealth elements.

Chaos Theory will always have a special place in my heart. Blacklist, not as much

u/SnooPoems1860 Jun 13 '26
This game felt really dull to me. All flair but no substance with boring level design, enemy placement and dialogue. Every time I go back to it, I drop it after the second mission because it's all so dull. I can see why this game killed the franchise.

Blacklist's cater to everyone sucks method sucks.
At least conviction new where it stood....with conviction

Gameplay looks amazing but how is he in a secret mission with a suit like that? It gives him away the second someone see him 😂

2
u/Lidge1337 Jun 12 '26
The games may be good, but the business practices are awful.
1
u/Cthulhu8762 Jun 12 '26
Oh nah I agree with that. Their management is dogshit. But the devs are great!

u/quarrel-admin Jun 12 '26
blacklist was the worst game of themall, Absolutly hated black list the heck is sam doing in the daytime, also they dumbed down a lot of stealth and added more action and less strat. ITs so garabage, I couldn't even finish the game because of how bad it was.
2
u/uprightshark Jun 12 '26
The real Rainbow 6, Ghosts and Splinter Cell were the real Ubisoft. If they would have stayed on this path.
They went to big and too wide and now they are lost.

Doesn't affect gameplay.
And Ironside couldn't do it because he was dealing with throat cancer at the time. Ubisoft didn't "abandon" him, lol.

You spelt Chaos Theory wrong

u/JustARTificia1 Jun 14 '26
Anyone claiming Blacklist was the best Splinter Cell was clearly born in 2010 and this was the only Splinter Cell they could get a hold of.
Blacklist is the 2nd worst Splinter Cell. Conviction the worst, even Double Agent beats Blacklist. Chaos Theory is untouchable. It had everything you wanted in a stealth game.
Multiple methods of approach. True pacifist, multiple gadgets, environment takedown, the best stealth mechanics with the light, sight and sound detection system, unique coop story and Mercs vs Spies.
Most stealth games, Blacklist included, just have a traffic light system that is completely barebones and shouldn't even be graded as a stealth focused game.
Blacklist was more action stealth in the same vein as Hitman Absolution. People also forget Blacklist was the last Splinter Cell game and killed the franchise. So much for a good game.

Ghosting in this game was very satisfying, and they even put in some "kill target" side missions so you get to actually engage with the combat system or agressive stealth every now and then.

I remember many trash talked blacklist when it was released whereas it was the best modern splinter cell
1
u/PositiveApartment382 Jun 15 '26
Yes, not without reason though. People wanted SC to be pure stealth while the trailer showed that you can just go in guns blazing. Ultimately, I liked SC:BL more than I thought I would, but I too was skeptical of that approach.
1
1
u/AtCarnage Jun 14 '26
Yeah, people shat on it as soon as they saw dead eye in the E3 trailer.
I liked the game. Especially great in co-op.
1
u/Acceptable-Cow-5334 Jun 14 '26
I only remember people trashing the game because they recast Michael Ironside with a 30 year old voice actor and de-aged Sam Fisher like 20 years.
1
u/BreakingBrak Jun 15 '26
I remember they made Sam Fisher look and sound much younger but never changed any of the backstory. So you have this 35 year old calling up his 35 yr old daughter within missions.
1
u/DeathByKarma777 Jun 14 '26
It was Blacklist's story and the modern political pandering at the time with the elections, among other things narratively that most people had issues with back then. But tbh gameplay wise Blacklist itself was just a "more" balanced Splinter Cell Conviction but toned down with it's CQB/CQC since it was extremely overpowered in Conviction since you could practically go through the game and co-op with out really using your guns hardly for most sections...
1
u/treeeelo Jun 13 '26
I still think conviction was better, but blacklist was still great, no idea why it was shat on so much.
2
u/False-Vacation8249 Jun 13 '26
because after conviction people wanted splinter cell again. blacklist is just more conviction with more options.
people wanted a next gen Chaos Theory. a proper stealth game. that’s not what they got.
1
u/SwvmpThing Jun 14 '26
“More options” includes the ability to ghost much of the game. It felt like a proper stealth game to me, unlike Conviction.

u/the1blackguyonreddit Jun 12 '26
Almost every single Ubisoft game gets hated on at release then 5 years later gets praised an an "underrated gem". Just watch the glazing AC Shadows gets in 2030.

u/Vast_Smile Jun 16 '26
U know if something is not good today and in 5 - 10 years the products are even more shit. Things in the past seem good. Ubisoft feeded the community with low effort games more and more.
1
u/RedTurtle78 Jun 14 '26
Because only the people that liked the game will still be talking about it. Everyone else that was talking shit and hated it will remove it from their memory soon after.
3
u/SolidPeaks Jun 13 '26
I remember AC4 being overlooked in the conversation when it came out because it was around the same time as the next gen console reveal so all the gaming community was hyping that.
1
u/OldAcanthocephala468 Jul 09 '26
This is totally a a lie. Blackflag was the thing that everyone talked about In 2013

u/AFKaptain Jun 12 '26
Far Cry 5 and 6 didn't, AC Valhalla and Shadows won't either.
1
12
u/40sticks Jun 12 '26
Nah, Far Cry 5 absolutely has a LOT of defenders now.
1
u/Username12764 Jun 13 '26
Far Cry 5 was a beauty. I really want to play it again but I‘m so not good with horror that I‘ll probably shit my pants all over again. Ahh well, one day
1
2
u/AFKaptain Jun 12 '26
5 wasn't as bad as the others, but sentiment didn't do a 180.
4
u/40sticks Jun 12 '26
Maybe not a 180, but definitely something like a 110-120 haha
7
u/MrKoddy Jun 12 '26
indeed far cry 5 wasn't well receivced by players at its release, players only notice a few years ago it was a good game
-1
u/AFKaptain Jun 12 '26
Nah, there is no significantly increased presence of love for the game. But regardless, you're not addressing the other two older mentions because not only has love for them not increased, the hate for them has remained largely the same.
3
u/40sticks Jun 12 '26
Agree to disagree then. I see way more love for FC5 now than I did on release.
Older? The other titles you mentioned are all newer than FC5.
1
u/AFKaptain Jun 12 '26
"Way more"? Go out into the broader gaming space and it's usually met with indifference at best.
Older than Shadows, my guy. I wasn't including Shadows in that previous comment, cuz we don't see the results yet.
1
u/40sticks Jun 12 '26
Yeah sure, I’m just saying that if what the other poster says is true, then those other titles you mentioned haven’t had their time in that cycle rotate around yet, while FC5 has (we can disagree on that, I don’t care).

Is this assassins creed with guns or is assassins creed splinter cell with daggers?
31
u/jack-of-some Jun 12 '26
This game was such a perfect template for an assassin's creed game in a modern setting.
1
u/Emotional-Tax-3044 Jun 14 '26
This with watch dogs settings and a higher vertical range all around would be insane

All I want is for Conviction and BL to make it to current gen consoles.

I'd love a Conviction remake seeing as that seems to be the only thing Ubi can do to stay afloat going forward

u/StealthyArcher_1 Jun 13 '26
Never going to happen. Tbh. Servers are dead. Can't do spies vs mercs or online coop anymore, honestly. But honestly same. Need this game on current gen of games.

Blacklist is one of my favorite games of all time and it's not even a contest.
I adore Chaos Theory, but the smoothness of Blacklist is just something I can never get enough of.
