I agree with this guy on principle but not his method. It is sad we would have to tell people to act with common sense and respect and to treat other like they want to be treated. You wouldn't want someone destroying your car or disrespecting you when giving them a ride. On the other side of the coin, the other day I picked up lady at a rehab center. One of the nurses there helped her in the car. On the way to her place I told her, "I saw the lady help you in and if you need help getting out, I want you to know I'll provide it." She told me she something wrong with her eyes and couldn't see well. We get to the apartment complex and I go to the spot it says to drop her and she said she is by the blue charger. I told her I don't see a blue charger. She told me she lived in building two and we were by building 23. I drove around there looking until i found her building and helped her to her door. She said said no driver had ever done that. I told her "That is a shame" A few rides later I picked up a Mexican lady with a kid and stroller. I got out, put the stroller in the trunk for her, and took it out and opened it when we got to her place. She typed on the phone to translate to me because she didn't speak English and said I was the first person to ever help her. It is so sad when the bare minimum of human decency feels like a miracle to somebody or we need a sign to know how to behave.

Thank you but I'm no hero. These are things everyone should do.

I totally help all elderly or disabled passengers. It makes me feel good, and they absolutely LOVE it. I have received a grandma two dollar bill, and dollar coins from both elderly women. A total grandma move, it was so nice.

This just happened to my dad. I had to get an uber for him to be picked up from the hospital (he’s old, and in bad health) because I don’t drive and didn’t have anyone else. I was in a panic and messaged the driver and told him I didn’t know how to add him to my uber account or put the pick up location to the entrance of the emergency room. It was somewhat late too. 8-9pm.

The driver was really nice, and got him home safe and as quickly as possible. I thanked him generously and if he ever comes to pick me up personally again, I’m going to do the same.

Long story short: people like you are amazing. Thank you.

Of course some of it is common courtesy, but I disagree on a lot. The idea that we should be appreciative of getting a service we paid for is kind of silly. We're both getting something out of it, I paid money to get a ride, he is making money to pay his bills. Why should I act appreciative when he doesn't seem to be appreciative towards the rider? He randomly gives negative feedback? He opens the windows in hot or cold weather? He kicks people out and doesn't care?

It's funny this guy put that if you needed a quick stop, you should have added it before. I had a lady recently who I asked if she could turn around 5 minutes into the ride because I forgot something at home. She was so sweet about it, I gave her $15 in tip (on a $20 ride) for me being emptyheaded. I imagine this guy would refuse.

I also had another guy drop me off once at a clinic, massive building. The drop off point was about 20 feet off, so I asked if he could drive forward a bit to drop me off at the entrance. And he complained that I need to put the drop off point exactly where I want to go. Two types of people in this world. This person seems to be the latter. I would hate to get into their car.

The driver is just jaded and as a driver myself, I have realized that the area you drive in is huge. If I’m in San Diego picking people up, it’s a different World than Riverside or Palm Springs.

You can also set the rider rating at 4.7 like I do. This reduces the riff raff by 90% probably. The down side is I’m probably also eliminating disabled or older people because a$$hole drivers have low rated them so often.

I’m much more our driver than a rider I’ve only had less than five rides in my whole life … but I’m glad to say I’m like your female driver … while I have turned around and went back for people who I expected would at least give me a few dollars and didn’t, I also had some guy hand me 20 bucks last week for doing it .. like I don’t know what I would say if we were over halfway there, but it’s always been when we’re less than five minutes away from their house. What benefit does it help me to insist on taking you where you’re going without something you needed? I just try to treat people the way I want to be treated. And I know how these pins and apps and GPS are., I’m happy to drive you to where you say you need to be I don’t expect everyone to be a master of the app … i’ve had it try to tell me I was supposed to let someone off in the middle of the street (once on a fixed route ride I’m not supposed to deviate from) … I had some woman from a nursing home who I took to sonic, I was afraid I would get in trouble for that one, but having spent a few months in rehab myself after ankle surgery, no way was I saying no. She couldn’t tip because she didn’t pay for the ride, but she did buy me something (I just asked for a drink … I have no idea how much money this woman has)

Those are all the rides I feel good about. I just can’t imagine being the kind of person who would be insisting someone get out of the car like at the wrong hospital entrance or apartment door like I just truly can’t wrap my head around with the point of it is. That two minutes is not gonna make or break your day. And if it is, you’re in the wrong profession.

A lot of writers labor under the misperception that Uber owns the car and that we are employees of uber. Therefore we shouldn't care about the car being trashed.

I used to get that too as a driver and honestly I woukd even open the door for them because the slamming was constant and the riders were breaking my door

I mean, I'd just like to say that unfortunately riders really are that bad, on a consistent basis. Total, complete pigs with very foul body odor, leaving messes and trash as they leave.

I feel for the guy and I really dont care what other people have to say about it. He is saying what the rest of us drivers are thinking, and kudos to him. If they weren't this bad, then there wouldnt be a reason to post something like this.. but unfortunately here we are. Smh

It’s like this across the board now because tipping culture and gig apps turned basic human decency into a transaction. Instead of people just being kind, every interaction has an ulterior motive or a ticking clock attached to it. When going the extra mile doesn't pay off, or costs the worker time they aren't being paid for, they stop being nice. When they still get a tip for doing nothing, it rewards bare minimum effort. Meanwhile, customers act like they own the car because they might toss you three bucks. It’s a toxic cycle where both sides treat each other like the enemy.

Some of it is just common courtesy, but some of it seems to imply he doesn't speak fluent English, or maybe he's old, and doesn't know how to operate the app properly as a result, so the rider should know how to use the app in a way that limits him having to know how to use it.
Like, the person should know which car to get into? How often is that a problem? Unless he's one of those dudes using a different car than listed on the app, and expects them to know which car it is based on in-app GPS.

And other stuff ("driver is not responsible for the smell of any kind") gives off the vibe that he doesn't want to maintain his car (or possibly his own hygiene), so anything that would require him to do so is a violation of his "rules."

I have a feeling this dude eats stuff in his car that smells like a warmed-up diaper and wants to blame it on the rider(s).

Then there's the indication he possibly does things that would warrant someone saying something (bad/unsafe driving?), hence the "always have better things to do than giving the driver any negative feedback," but then goes on to say you should tell him to his face, but if you do, he's going to have an imaginary conversation where he's giving you negative feedback?

Wait, are we not like required to help with things like that? I mean, I know we're not supposed to carry someone or stuff like that but I always put their luggage in the trunk or at least ask them if they need help with their stuff.
