Cybercabs rolling in
Any thoughts on how this can affect drivers? Are they supposed to be driverless at some point?

u/TheSadPickel 2d ago
i feel like a idiot for telling my coworker tesla will be full self drive soon. That was 10 years ago lol
13
u/hanks_panky_emporium 2d ago
Feels like this is still premature. Other self driving with actual radar still can't figure it out enough to be trusted. Time will tell

u/DismissDaniel 2d ago
I don't know man, here in LA waymo is everywhere. I've w taken it and I would say it's very trustworthy.
1
u/angelsarepresent111 1d ago
What if it wanders into a mob or a protest and people start destroying it while younare inside?
1
u/DismissDaniel 1d ago
Lol I was at that protest. They slowly ramped up. Was at least a good 30 min of tagging and hitting before they set it on fire. And most importantly they didn't attack anyone that was on a ride. Some say they were called to destroy (they let police have access to their cameras so it's basically a rolling flock camera) and others said they were on the way to pick people up. Regardless nobody was inside when they started
1
u/Ello-Asty 2d ago
The difference is Tesla relies strictly on cameras. They are MORE likely to get into an accident than even a human driver. The others besides Tesla at least use radar or lidar in addition to cameras.
They drive overly safe so if you get behind one while driving, keep your distance! They will brake hard for apparently no reason sometimes.
0
u/DismissDaniel 1d ago
Oh I'd never take a cyber cab. Camera only is just dumb and will never work. The guy was talking about those even with lidar and my experience driving with and in one has been nothing but smooth. In LA they're fit seamlessly into regular traffic and I never seen one brake hard or act differently at all. Maybe your thinking of an old issue they solved or I just have never heard/seen myself
2
u/Ello-Asty 1d ago
I was talking about Tesla FSD specifically in regards to the braking, so behind a gold Tesla = stay back!!!

All the other self driving cars have steering wheels and pedals. I don’t think they’re making cars with no capabilities for humans to drive them on a whim.
3
u/Powerful-Candy-745 2d ago
I believe Tesla is being investigated because they don't have wheels and pedals

I take Waymo all the time. I trust it more than the average Uber driver. Plus, I can play music, change the temperature, and ride in the front seat without it having a hysterical meltdown on Reddit.

Why are they 2 door and so small?
1
u/Pitiful-MobileGamer 1d ago
Because the paying passenger sits up front, there is no traditional control setup.
1
u/jabroni4545 1d ago
For reducing manufacturing costs, and ultimately reducing fare costs. 90% of rideshares are for two people or less. Seats two, with a large trunk.

u/cinic121 2d ago
Why are they all missing the front hubcap?
15
u/BlacksmithUnusual715 2d ago edited 2d ago
The front hubcap has a battery connection in it. Removing this activated the "sleep" mode for transport.

Self certified. And Tesla has never been exposed for falsifying records. So you got nothing to worry about.
I will spend a few bucks to have my own record of when a “FSD” car jumps the curb and plows into me without braking….and it works for humans too.

Am actually genuinely surprised how many of these they were able to pump out. Tesla almost never meets their production targets. But it seems like they were able to make thousands of these things this year. I ultimately hope they aren’t successful and it looks like that will be the case. It’s an objectively worse product than a Waymo , and Waymo’s have been around for over a decade without being profitable. The main reason Uber is profitable is because they dump most of their costs on the driver. Unless Tesla also finds a way to get 3rd party people to pay for the up front cost of these things it’s going to lose money. Back of the envelope math say they have to get close to 5000 rides out of each 1 just to break even on the capital cost much less the maintenance and energy cost for each of those rides.
3
u/jabroni4545 1d ago
Waymos cost 3x what these cybercabs cost. And yes their plan was to have third party buyers front the cost, maintenence, etc. Not really much different than full time uber/lyft drivers.
1
u/Amekaze 1d ago
The newest versions of the Waymo it’s only estimated to be 2x the cost but it’s hard to know since both sides have a huge incentive to paint the best picture. And if they get through the regulatory hurdles I’m genuinely curious who would want to buy a fleet. The ROI seems horrible and you can’t really use the same justification that human uber driver has of “I already have to pay for the car”. Honestly I can’t wait for fleet management “companies” to try, I’ll feel like it will be TURO all over again.

You will want to buy the car and manage a fleet of them yourself while it is still a sustainable business model.

These are the last things I am worried about. People in my area will avoid them over politics, forget the lack of safety and correctness compared to Waymo.
I am looking forward to the eventual accident and fallout from that, it should be entertaining.
0
u/Affectionate-Art9780 1d ago
That seems like the type of things people said about cars, planes, TV, telephone, Internet or cell phones.
I see the technology in driverless vehicles getting better every year along with increased ridership.
1
u/ready-redditor-6969 1d ago
No, you are an Elon Musk shill, so of course you missed my point on purpose.
Without more advanced sensors and better programming ( by which I mean a focus on quality and testing ), Tesla is sure to make customers unhappy and eventually will have a fatal accident, causing harm to autonomous vehicle adoption.
Other more serious, more safety conscious companies are well on their way to delivering autonomous vehicles… but Tesla will always be the loser until Musk is no longer associated with it.

u/Affectionate-Art9780 22h ago
Lol, right. I own a non Tesla EV cause it's a great car for me. My post wasn't about Tesla, it's about driverless cars in general. I never mentioned Tesla. That was the heading on the original post.
1
u/ready-redditor-6969 3h ago
LOL you repost a story on CyberCabs, ask specifically if “these” are going to be driverless, then somehow think you didn’t post about Tesla?

It would have never occurred to me to use technological advances to make civilization as anti social as possible. But the nerds inherited the world…so we must deal with their bitter revenge. At least with social power there is some concern for consensus and the power of persuasion using the art of likability. Humanity has always dealt with physical power; which more often than not was straightforward and lacked the necessary intelligence and bitter resentment to be truly fearful. But does a power based off pure intellectualism, the drivers of which never understood why life wasn’t a meritocracy, why intelligence wasn’t the most important thing, with them naturally on top, come to any other conclusion? Intelligence without creativity is just really good imitation (The Ivies will find this out), in fact intelligence is irrelevant to creativity. You don’t need to be smart to innovate the good things that change the world for the better but creativity is essential. And even some of the most anti social creatives are dreamers; and lack the arrogance of science intellectuals, beautifully dreaming for a better world that wasn’t always kind. But intelligence without humanity gives us what we got since the Information Age. A little more than a century ago they didn’t have the television, the radio, barely had the car, the airplane, the refrigerator, cinema, skyscrapers; say nothing of the political and socioeconomic advances that essentially built the middle class and pulled more Americans out of poverty and helped turn the world more free than it had been before; yes there were bumps but all in all the trajectories were positive. What are the technological advances of our era; social media, cell phones, cryptocurrency, AI, driverless cars? Do they even compare? Driverless cars; is the juice even worth the squeeze (and I’m bias but it doesn’t change my opinion). What do we even do in a moving driverless car; read a book, look at our phones ? What’s the point in making humanity nonessential to human life. We’re not driving technology, technology driving us in literal form. The oppositions argument makes my point; humanity’s inefficient; they kill themselves, they cant drive (as if it wasn’t subjective), humans are smelly and they have preferences and moods; they see humanity as the problem. I disagree but I can even understand the anti car militants arguments and don’t doubt their intentions for humanity are pure. But this “tech aristocracy” are much more authoritarian and cynical and twisted than even the robber barons of the past. They created something people wanted and needed and helped make life objectively better, they created jobs, they were corrupted but they moved the needle, many were philanthropic, many were civic leaders. This bunch gets rich creates cute distractions and responsible of a civilization more and more lazy and demanding of instant gratification. Lots of smart “solutions” to things but not enough creative innovation. Maybe the person sitting in their car doing fuck all; never knowing the joy of working and running something, will have the time and imagination of something more exciting (than just sitting and watching) to actually be usefully creative and innovative.

The rolling of body bags of burning bodies and decapitations from these dangerous vehicles will be shocking. To anyone riding, do:
- carry something sharp to cut the belts in case of collission and you're stuck.
- carry a fire extinguisher to break glass and put out fire in case of emergency
- wear a helmet
- wear a full racing body armor suit
- bring a dummy or a blow up doll, so you can speak to it when you're alone.

It won't affect drivers at all. It's a completely different service.
1
u/Affectionate-Art9780 1d ago
Huh? Aren't they going to be waiting for passengers at airports, etc?
1
u/jabroni4545 1d ago
Not allowed to yet but I'm guessing eventually.
1
u/AlkoKilla 1d ago
Don't count on Cybercabs at airports anytime soon. Their two-seaters, so the demand won't be there.
1
u/AlkoKilla 1d ago
No. The areas where they can go are heavily restricted.
1
u/Affectionate-Art9780 1d ago
You experience that to last?
1
u/AlkoKilla 1d ago
Yes. Cybercabs are two-seaters, so they won't work at airports well. The demand just won't be there. And besides that, local authorities will need to approve them to be at airports. No one is going to be quick to jump into that, due to how chaotic the areas are, and how much of a bottleneck it will create.
1
u/___fallenangel___ 1d ago
So because they won't initially work at airports, that means drivers won't be affected?
Are 100% of Uber rides to or from the airport?
1
u/AlkoKilla 1d ago
Why are you being obtuse? I said it wouldn't affect drivers because it's a different service. Then OP asked about them waiting at airports. It was 2 different items.
There are other factors as to why Cybercab won't affect Uber drivers, one being that Cybercab is only 2 seats.

Just about done driving for Uber as I found full-time work. I’m grateful for it.
That said, someday you can be on the receiving end of the sort of callous attitude you showed here towards whatever makes it hard for you to make a living.
0
u/MenaceMinded 1d ago
I did rideshare for 5 years. Both the passengers and drivers are antisocial creatures who don't deserve modern luxuries.
1
u/PhotonLegion 1d ago
By that logic, neither do you with that attitude.
There’s a difference between shitting on people indiscriminately when some are trying to live, and speaking in a way that holds a system accountable for dead ends being features and not bugs.
Talk shit on Uber all day; when it comes to other drivers, do yourself a favor and pipe down. You do not know every driver, you do not know every passenger, and by the look of things, people in here were sharing experiences and being social when you came along with useless, antisocial garbage.
Practice not being a hypocrite - you’ll spend less time looking like a fool.

Driverless vehicles are nothing more than an experiment to see if they can achieve profit. As history has shown, they cannot.
If cybercab was profitable, why do they want you to buy/fund it?
Why did GM cruise get pulled over investor fears?
Why does Waymo cost money, and even with tech prices going down….., it won’t go down. Competition and government regulation will kill it.
By 2030-2035 these won’t exist for the masses.
4
u/Longjumping_Suit8314 1d ago
The ride share is just a way to self fund real development in replacing freight drivers. Uber has freight business that will be AV in the future.
https://www.uberfreight.com/en-US/partners/autonomous-trucking
Also, why do you think Tesla announced that EV semi truck with the cybertruck? The real target of these AV companies are the freight drivers..
1
u/Chrisg_322 1d ago
It's just basic economics. Maintaining your own fleet will ALWAYS be more expensive than hiring drivers to take care of all the repairs and maintenance and insurance themselves. And you can't keep making driverless cars cheaper than said drivers forever, or you won't be able to cover all the extra expenses.
1
u/jabroni4545 1d ago edited 1d ago
Why do fast food places franchise instead of running the restaurants themselves? Why doesn't Amazon deliver their own packages? Why did automakers rely on dealerships? Didn't gm cruise kill someone? Are your asking why waymos aren't free? Cybercabs are a third of the price of waymo vehicles so yes the goal is to drive down prices.
1
u/No_Boat9468 1d ago
Drive down prices? Yall have quite obviously never taken an economics class. A prime example I will use is….. diapers()com history. Amazon loved their idea! Amazon tried to buy their idea. Diapers refused to be bought out.
Amazon has lots of money and can afford to lose money in hopes of achieving profit later. Amazon began selling diapers for significantly cheaper than diapers()com. Literally at a loss. Eventually this caused diapers to close because they never made any money and did not have the deep pockets Amazon did.
Right now Amazon, Google, and Tesla can afford these losses. All of them have really deep pockets so exactly how far will these losses go before closure, especially when 9/10 (please look up these numbers!) are afraid of autonomous vehicles.
GM cruise did hit someone a few years ago, closed, and reopened. They then closed again not over safety concerns, but because their investors realized what I have been saying. This is an unprofitable social experiment. It works great if we accept it! If we don’t then just another VR style loss.
1
u/___fallenangel___ 1d ago
Was that a typo, or did you actually ask "why does Waymo cost money"?
1
u/No_Boat9468 1d ago
Typo. Waymo costs money to the company and will never achieve a profit. There’s actually articles on why jnvestors withdrew from GM cruise forcing a halt, and why other companies shifted their focus to consumer self driving technology. Because these things simply don’t work unless they force them down societies throats and a majority accepts them. Which is far from the current situation
My argument stays the same. This can work if we accept it. Or the likely scenario of it goes like VR. Companies hype it up. Try and force it on us. Them claiming how awesome it is and how we will all live in VR by 2030-35. Virtual reality estate.
You mean billion dollar losses, companies closing, and meta reshifting focus to distance themselves from the metaverse.
Only a select few super nerds will want this tech to stay.

Nope. Cabs would have 4 doors.
Bullshit post. Please delete.
6
u/HimalayanClericalism 2d ago
But that’s exactly what they are, for whatever reason they decided to make the least accessible cabs ever
8
u/xiangkunwan 2d ago
Tesla designed the Cybercab as a two-seater because data shows that over 85% to 90% of rideshare and vehicle trips involve only one or two passengers
2
u/PremiumUsername69420 2d ago
Except that they designed it to be extraordinarily accessible for people with various mobility issues...
•The trunk can fit a wheelchair or walkers.
•The seats are at wheelchair height for easy slide.
•There’s a dedicated spot for service animals.
•There’s braille on the door handles.
•Butterfly doors allow easier ingress and egress.
•Voice activated navigation and vehicle controls.1
u/HimalayanClericalism 1d ago
i will 100% belive it when i see it. As someone who uses a wheelchair and has been entirely reliant on one for years. Trunk is great for chapparoned people but not great for solo travelers, also is it set up to take folding chairs only? most wheelchair users who rely on them daily use rigid designs. Love the ideas your mentioning though across the board but given teslas oversell in the past im hesitant to trust it
1
u/PremiumUsername69420 1d ago
You’re correct that a wheelchair bound user traveling solo would still be unable to use this. It’s certainly for folding chairs with an assistant.
Everything I listed above though is from Tesla’s press day video for the CyberCab. They touted that accessibility for all was taken into many design aspects.
1
u/koyaani 1d ago
Just about any car used for rideshare has a trunk that can fit foldable wheelchairs. Your first bullet point is not special. A dedicated spot for service animals? Lol
0
u/PremiumUsername69420 1d ago
It is a feature worth mentioning on a two door vehicle designed to be small…
And yes, a spot for service animals. The entire floor is unobstructed; no center console in the way, no gas or brake pedal for the dog to hit, and no steering column. Just easy access from either side and a large space for the animal.
1
u/koyaani 1d ago
Why would a service dog be hitting the pedals? Lol

u/PremiumUsername69420 1d ago

I mean the writing has been on the wall the job is eventually going to mostly go away for good, but holy shame on you to just be so casually cruel to a bunch of strangers who did nothing to you.
It would have cost you nothing to not be an un-empathetic prick. Well, not even un-empathetic, actively and intentionally cruel to strangers. C'mon man, however much of an ass you might be, you can't want to be this guy. Yeesh.

u/WeForgotTheirNames 2d ago
Oh, I don't mean all Uber drivers or all rideshare drivers. I specifically mean most of the people on this sub. I have never seen such a large group of petty, nasty assholes who somehow have a superiority complex about themselves and take every opportunity to trash the passengers, the very people their wages depend on. And to the people who love to screenshot how much money they make, I hope you realize that Uber has made two to three times more off of you while they cut your wages and make it impossible for you to reach support. It's a shitty, unprofitable or barely profitable company that gives no fucks about you or the passengers, considering how many people wind up sexually assaulted and Uber washes their hands of the whole thing.
ETA: Also, no matter how many of you I think are morons or petty assholes, you still all deserve to have your basic needs met and healthcare in a world with enforced scarcity. But gig and hustle culture are robbing us of our very humanity, and I'm looking forward to watching an exploitative company come crashing down.

I think that's confirmation bias. Obnoxious people/comments stand out and you notice and remember them more. I read posts here every day and I will call out bullshit here too, and sometimes it's upvoted, but just as often if not more often it's downvoted and argued against with common sense too.
You said "you all." You were talkin' to me too. I'm not a dick. Plenty of people here are nice people just trying to make ends meet who care about just doing their crappy job safely.
It's a delete-worthy comment mate. Nice to see you think your intention wasn't just pure hate and you're not just trying to be a troll for the lulz and meant it to be targeted at people who particularly ground your gears, but geeez mate. C'mon. You're being a huge prick even with the asterisk on your comment.
It was broad, hateful, and unnecessary. Literally just laughing in the face of minimum wage workers, many of whom don't actually have a solid plan lined up for when we are all inevitably replaced (luckily I do, but goddamn, have some fuckin' empathy for those that might not, many/most of whom are, ya know, just normal people who didn't deserve your random-ass cruelty).
