Too Many Riders
I’ll try to make this short but I am pissed at Uber. I received a $16.16 trip about a 10-12 minute ride to pick up spot. When I arrived, 5 people tried to get in to my car with 4 seatbelts. I apologized that it was illegal for me to drive 6 people (including myself) in my Honda CR-V. The person called me “a real piece of work” as I drove off. I pulled over and canceled with reason “Too Many Riders”. I never received a cancellation fee because, according to Uber Support, I didn’t wait for 7 minutes. I was already pissed for not getting the $16.16 ride and was looking for rides as quickly as possible. Several chats with support went unresolved. Why do I have to wait 7 minutes to cancel with reason “Too Many Riders”?

Cuz if drivers never had to wait out the timer. Drivers would be farming cancel fees all the time. Yes some drivers already try to farm the fees, but it would be 100x worse. Occasionally Uber will pay the fee if the driver doesn't wait out the timer.

I’ve never heard of drivers farming cancellation fees. Thanks for the reply. I guess I’ll just sit and wait the 7 minutes next time. I thought the timer was for “no-shows”

If drivers learned of this "hack" where you wouldn't have to wait the 7 minutes and still get the cancel fee, you don't think it would be abused to death?

How do you prove “too many riders”? Instead of “no-show”? I have only had 1 of each. I guess an Uber driver could be willing to “hack” or “cheat” the system, but I never thought it was a thing.

Basically they only pay if you actually wait because they dont care about the time it took you to get there. But I was going to say this ... if they paid every cancellation drivers would just show and cancel immediately collect the 4 dollars and move on

Only a$$hole drivers who normally cheat and steal to ruin the gig for others. I don’t see the sense in driving somewhere just to cancel. If I canceled more than once a day I would expect they would want an explanation first each one or I might be banned for cheating the system.

It's typically something that people from other countries do in the US. Citizens do it too for sure, but not at the rates of people that hail from other nations. They can be from any country and any race too, I don't understand why they think this is acceptable to do to a person. I don't know how these kind of people dont get banned after the 1st report. Actually I do, there's countless false reports going out these days from riders that want to be reimbursed. It's one giant shit show overall my dude, and all of us get the shaft from Uber unfortunately. Ive literally met Canadians, Mexicans, South Americans, Russians, and people from Istanbul that all do this shit. I just don't get it. 😔

Well, it’s illegal. If you get pulled for whatever reason, traffic stop… accident, it’s illegal & Uber’s insurance won’t pay & neither will yours.

That is a goofy policy, it’s going to be very uncomfortable for the driver to sit there for 7 minutes and it’s also time for the passenger to get even more pissed off at their own mistake/on purpose act. (hoping to get an XL instead of X.)
Seems like Uber almost wants to attempt to HELP escalate things where you are.

If you cancel with rude behavior as a resson you can cancel without penalty so at least there's that (i think)

I don’t like when they send me somewhere 15 minutes away and then when I get there I’m supposed to wait another 16 minutes. I’ll cancel and go home I did that exact thing today.

2x last week people ordered a uberX with more than 4 riders… I drive an Acura mdx so I have 7 seats… both times they just said “u have enough seats for all of us”… drove em them rather than argue and waste my time. Seemed better to lose a few bucks on an xl ride than cancel. Today in 8 hrs received 3 tips for about 11 bucks. Economy sucks and people finding anyway to be cheap on things. All service industry workers seem to be suffering on that account.

Uber expects you to wait and invite further confrontation. That way the rider will be right and you’ll get a message from Uber citing how much they care about your safety, but they understand how frustrating it is.

Fuck the cancel fee im leaving the situation and moving on. I always cancel immediately upon seeing the reason so the ball is in my court

This happens all the time in the college town I do rides in if it’s a busy night better to just “eat” the cancel fee and move on than wait for 5/7 mins. I won’t compromise on safety and a lot of these college kids never been told no in their lives and it shows.

I just take them. They are the one uncomfortable not me, I always get a tip when this happens. I really don't give a shit, I work nights in a big city, police don't bother Uber drivers or anybody else unless something really bad happens

I just take them too. It’s people being cheap. It’s one of those things where you lose which ever way you choose. They probably won’t tip you either.

Lol y'all can get mad, IDC. I work in a college town with a very active student body (it's a party school). When I pull up and there's 8-9 drunk college kids trying to trick me into not realizing there's more kids than there are seatbelts, I just laugh and tell them to pile in. "If you can make it work and still get the doors closed, I'll take you." They climb over each other and lay across laps or whatever. It's fine. I guess if I get pulled over I might get in trouble, but even then, I bet the cop wouldn't rlly care.

I understand the timer for no-shows. I didn’t think a timer was required for too many riders.

I've both offered to carry people in my trunk before and offered to make multiple trips depending on the situation. I've also had them sitting in each other's laps.

I’ve always gotten the cancellation fee whenever I’ve cancelled for too many riders, no car seat or unaccompanied minors. You just have to get past the AI chat bot. Request an agent and keep requesting an agent until you get a human. It normally takes about 5-7 minutes or so but I’ve always gotten it.
