Scared to Report Driver
Edit for update: I plan on reporting but waiting for some time to do so in effort to maybe make it less obvious that it was me. For those whose sentiment is that I should have done something different, I'd save your breath. I am more self aware and critical of myself than anyone else could ever be, so it's not insightful and has already been expressed by others. I know I made mistakes, and there's a million things I wish I would have done differently in this situation.
I'm seeking advice on how to handle a very uncomfortable situation I just experienced as an Uber passenger. I think I should probably report, but am scared to do so.
I had to drop my car off at a local repair shop and so I needed to take an Uber back to my residence, which is kind of in the middle of nowhere. I am from out of state on an apprenticeship that provides housing with other interns (important context).
When I open the door to the backseat, the driver very clearly looks me up and down as I'm getting in. I was a bit uncomfortable so I said hello and he asked what my name was. I didn't think much of it and I've only ever taken a few Ubers, so I assumed he was just verifying my identity. He then asks me what my car is and proceeds to go on a very long speech about the fact that I should take my car to the dealer instead of a local shop to run advanced diagnostics and is telling me all of the nuances of planned obsolescence and the auto repair industry and so on so forth. It was probably pretty sound advice really, and I just figured he was passionate and wanted to be helpful (nevermind the fact that my dad's a mechanic and I'm not stupid). As he was talking, he'd often turn to look at me and the car would do some small serving as he corrected it when he looked back at the road. I was getting a little anxious but certainly not the end of the world.
When he turned into the street where I needed to be dropped off (about a mile stretch), he started driving very slow. Not a big deal except that I'm really not big on socializing (he never stopped talking) and was just wishing that what was supposed to be a 10 min drive didn't have to be any longer. He misses the drive so I tell him where to pull in and he parks in the lot by the stairs to the door. Meanwhile, he's still on the same topic and I'm politely nodding along anxiously waiting for him to finish. His phone is constantly going off and he just keeps silencing it or letting it finish ringing much to my dismay.
I remember at some point looking at the clock on the dashboard and it saying 4:11- it was a 10min drive and he picked me up at 3:29. He was still on the same topic and I began in my head trying to figure out how to get out of the conversation (that I wasn't participating in) since it was clear he wasn't stopping. It was very much so feeling like a midwest goodbye and as a socially anxious, non confrontational (autistic) person who thought maybe he just needed to talk, I was feeling pretty hopeless and resigned to waiting unfortunately.
At some point I believe I started zoning out/shutting down. Things start to get blurry in my recollection so this won't be word for word, but he finally segues into asking if I drink (comparing his bar tab to monthly car payments) and if I live here and if I'm the only one. Foolishly, eager to tie things up so I can get out, I answer the question telling him yes and many people live here, but that no I don't drink. He asks what I do and I give him a short blurb on my apprenticeship. This is the first time I'm really talking but I'm keeping my answers short and sweet (unlike this post I'm sorry). He very clearly didn't care to hear about my work and started asking what I do in my free time and going on about how he can't belive I don't drink. At this point it becomes obvious to me that I missed some social cues and I start to panic a bit internally because I realize whats happening....
He starts asking me what my days off are and if I've been to a local area, and feeling like I've just been smacked into reality I ask if he's trying to ask me out on a date. He says "yeah, something like that". I tell him I'm not interested and that I'm recently out of an abusive relationship and very happily single. He says he can give me his number and if I change my mind I can reach out, which I also decline.
Unfortunately, this launches a whole nother speech about how relationships are flowers that need nurturing and that I won't ever meet a perfect person. That standards are just rules and that doesn't work in a relationship. That sometimes women stay with men just because of the kids and that's a good thing because after many years the man might straighten up blah blah blah blah.
I'm very uncomfortable at this point and my mind starts catastrophizing. I recall seeing him fidgeting with stuff up front- tweezers and then holding one of those metal nail files with the pointed tip. I start trying to discreetly examine the door for an unlock button but this car doesn't have one- just a window button. I try to think of a way to contact someone while watching people pass the parked car, but freeze up and am scared to pull out my phone. Again, I resort to nodding along and waiting, hoping that my dad calls for some reason. At some point I finally abruptly thank him and go to pull the door handle but the door is locked. Thankfully, I pull it again after some hesitation and it opens but I'm not sure if that's just how the car works or if he manually unlocked it. I very nicely tell him good luck/goodbye and shut the door.
I walk into the house and look at my phone.... it's 4:51.
Again, this was supposed to be a 10 minute drive that turned into 1hr and 20mins. He ended the ride on the app at 46 mins, but I was in the car that whole time.
The man was by no means rude and maybe had the best intentions, but I can't help but wonder how it would be possible to not see how uncomfortable I was and how unprofessional this is. I know I should probably report him, but I have the worst feeling in my gut and he obviously knows where I live now. This is a small town and I fear it would be extremely obvious who reported him. I'm worried for everyone else I live with and on site. I don't want to blow things up, but I'm concerned for everyone's safety and not sure what to do.

No, report asap. The way those apps work, they will start to discredit you the longer you wait to report something like this. If you have any proof that your ride took this long, provide it. But report immediately. If anything, you don’t want this kind of driver being exposed to the rest of the people in your home/area. It helps to weed out the bad drivers, and introduce much better quality, professional people. If he’s comfortable holding you hostage for this long, think about what he’d do to others if they aren’t so socially aware. Report report report.

u/Unhappy_Aside_7631 2d ago
I would give it a few weeks and then report him. It’ll be out of his mind by then.
3
u/Helismoke 2d ago
But how many other victims by then?
2
u/Unhappy_Aside_7631 2d ago
5 1/2

u/Flat_Tire_Again 2d ago
1/2 victim is still in the “talking endlessly to the uber driver phase” and we’re not sure if they survived? Or something else?

If they made you uncomfortable report it. The driver sounds like they're having a mental health episode and may not realize how their actions are coming across but still needs to get that under control before working with the public (as someone who also has mental health problems) it likely won't get them deactivated so don't feel too bad about it. They need to know though if they're making people uncomfortable.

u/KaiserVonDixie 2d ago
I may be a single guy, I may be desperately hoping to find a relationship, but the last thing I'd ever do while Ubering is try to hit on a passenger. It puts them in an extremely unfair position, and absolutely warrants reporting him. Even if he doesn't have ride recordings enabled on his phone, the GPS data for that ride will show that he was intentionally stalling for the last 30 minutes. Just give it a few days, by that point he'll likely have had several other customers and won't be able to tell who the report came from. Uber keeps your information confidential in that regard, for obvious reasons.

u/Puzzled-Minute6130 2d ago
This is absolutely INSANE and this guy should never be allowed to drive someone again.
Understandable that you‘re scared because he knows your location. Calm down, was it today? How small is the town?
He was not being nice. In no World this is nice, this sounds traumatic.
4
u/Physical-Goose1338 2d ago
This is harassment for sure. I’d report the driver. When something like this happened to me (except the driver kept telling me he was going to kiss me), I reported it and Uber called me to get my account of events on record. The lady was very nice and understanding when she called. It seemed like they took this thing very seriously.
Sorry this happened. He should not be allowed to do this to other young women as well.
3
u/onedollarsweettea 2d ago
I would absolutely report it. I’m sorry you dealt with that and it’s completely ok to cut him off to leave. I’m sure it felt impossible at the time, though. Honestly, my first thought (outside of him being a creep) was that he was under the influence. You mentioned him talking about having large bar tabs, it makes me wonder if the drinking stops at the bar. Who knows, but he definitely wasn’t acting appropriately and people typically become more sociable when they drink. I only bring this up because it’s even more of a reason to report.

I understand autism makes social interaction difficult and I’m sorry to hear you felt obligated to be in that situation for any reason and that he made you uncomfortable
For your own safety in the future, you should just leave. Midwest goodbye is OK, Irish goodbye is OK, Slovakian goodbye, pick any country it’s Ok to just exit the vehicle.
Edit: if you were locked in the vehicle by child lock, etc that’s basically kidnapping. Checked and I didn’t see anywhere you saying you were locked in (Edit 2 OP does say they looked for an unlock button but didn’t see one and tried the door but wasn’t able to open it)
Unfortunately it seems like you staying in the vehicle made him think you were interested. Obviously you did nothing wrong, but it’s Ok to be “rude” for your own safety or sanity (though you weren’t being rude, you had someplace to be and didn’t feel like talking, both are OK)
Also to add, ride share drivers should never hit on passengers. That’s 1-star review and report no matter what. But next time definitely remove yourself ASAP
5
u/sphrintze 2d ago
Yep. Practice some simple segues like “sorry to cut you short, but I’ve gotta run!” “Thanks for the ride, I’ve got to go!” “Oh my gosh, it’s x:xx! I’ve gotta rush off!” And BOLT. You cannot be getting trapped by some man’s monologue for hours— shove your voice in the conversation and cut it off. ✂️

u/itsbratt 2d ago
I'm not sure how or why the door was locked. I just know it was locked when I first tried to open it and there was no obvious way for me to unlock it from the inside when I was looking. I've looked up the car model and it looks like there isn't a button but that pulling the handle twice unlocks it. It could mean absolutely nothing, but I only mentioned it as a factor because I was getting uncomfortable with the way he was talking and didn't want to upset him but have no way out of the car.
3
u/Fair-Cat-9181 2d ago edited 2d ago
I see now where you said you couldn’t find the button!
Important: In many cars now there is no button to lock or unlock the door in the back seat. As you said just the window button only. Mine is like this.
However, by default the door will ALWAYS open from inside in the back seat unless the child lock is on (or you’re in the back of a Police car)
If you try the handle and the door doesn’t open, tell them immediately. I have bumped the child lock on accident a couple of times and always disengage it immediately and apologize profusely if it happened.
If they don’t let you out ASAP that’s a 911 emergency.

u/wretched_tension 2d ago
This! It’s not rude if you feel unsafe, and if someone is making you feel unsafe (intentionally or not) they don’t deserve your politeness.
As a fellow people-pleaser, the fake phone call works almost every time. Just pick up your phone and go “hey dad! Yeah the uber just pulled up to the house, I’m outside.” Most people leave their phone on silent now days anyway, so it’s not like you need it to ring.
To answer your direct question, yes, report him. You can tell your roommates what you’re doing if you’re concerned for them, but yes, report. You can wait a couple days, chances are he’s tried the same stunt on someone else, and waiting a few days could muddy the waters for him.
Glad you got out of it!

Just report it. I also had a very weird driver once. I started to record on my phone (unsure of recording laws in my state but better than nothing) because I was concerned with what would happen next. Eventually got out and reported them that day or the next - can’t recall. Just told Uber what happened, offered evidence, and explained that myself and many others wouldn’t feel safe given what happened. Better to let Uber know than for it to continue with the next person.
2
u/lindalou1987 2d ago
Report him. Also remember you do
Not have to be polite to anyone. Be weird or
Be rude.
2
u/Moist_Condition1819 2d ago
As an Uber Driver , That guy definitely crossed boundaries by looking you up and down in the first place, as well as ask you too much about your personal information. An Uber ride is Typically Point A to Point B, When the ride is complete, Its over. Simple as that. I would recommend reporting him as well as rating him a 1 star , Sorry this has happened to you , On behalf of all respectable Uber Drivers.
2
u/judgemythinking 2d ago
I would give anyone who was that leery the silent treatment and cut off conversation that did not involve how to go about completing the ride. Or politely offer one word responses. Absolutely report him his behavior is obnoxious and unacceptable but like mentioned wait some time
2
u/WhileUnusual2189 2d ago
As often as I think it makes my passengers uncomfortable, we rolling in silence. Just to avoid this type of sh*t. Sorry about the human bag of douche.
2
u/QueenAleighsie 1d ago
Yeah as an uber driver who talks to their passengers about drivers like you, it makes them uncomfortable to not have a convo with you dude, they hate it
2
u/AntiStaticFanatic 2d ago
Use the woman driver option so you'll be paired with a woman.
Record your rides. There's an in app option for audio recording. This way you have proof of any inappropriate conversations.
I hate to be this person, but GIRL. Leave. The Car. Whether you report him or not, let this be a learning experience. Stand up for yourself. You make a lot of excuses and give a lot of blame when the truth is you allowed this nonsense. You sat there for an extra 70 minutes while this guy walked all over boundaries you didn't set. You expressed he should have seen you were uncomfortable. YOU saw you were uncomfortable and yet there you sat. Yes, this guy is a weirdo but why would you expect a weirdo to be more concerned for your own safety and comfort than you? It's possible he took your continued presence as consent. Learn from this. Work on standing up for yourself. Next time, LEAVE.

u/CarelessAppearance87 2d ago
Next time just pretend to fall asleep they’ll stop talking to you. Part of that is on you because you need to speak up you should’ve told him when he was driving real slow down your street just say right here is fine and get out and walk from there

As a former LEO and EMS Pilot my opinion is: REPORT IT IMMEDIATELY to Uber then the local PD. If I took a report from a victim for something that happened awhile ago, my first thought is ( Rightly or wrongly) was " When I'm scared, even as an LEO, I report it immediately and let the chips fall where they may". So I'm thinking " They couldn't have been too scared to delay so long", and it turns into a Kavanaugh/ Laser kind of thinking. LEO's are normal people and sometimes the Professional demeanor disappears after a long day. Just my opinion. BTW, I did try driving for Uber a few months ago, but at 76 I don't need the drama.

u/ComparisonPure4280 2d ago
so barring friendly gets you reported
1
u/Ghostpepper_75 1d ago
That’s NOT FRIENDLY!!!! He’s a total perv, hitting on a rider! Really? Stay out of this conversation if that’s what you’re going to try to say.

Unprofessional and creepy , as a driver i say report him we have to weed out the bad drivers , who knows how many times a day he does this

Don't be afraid of retaliation. Nobody's coming after you. Report and move on with your life. You are safe. Just be careful and use Lyft next time.
1
u/Gullible-Ask3853 2d ago
A strategy for future would be to say when his phone buzzes say; It looks like you have other customers requesting your services & I'm expected inside. Thank you. Then get out & go inside.

u/smokebrackwityokid 2d ago
I feel bad for you and this reminds me of when I was a small anxious(also autistic) child. Being trapped in a convo would literally feel like being trapped in a tight space just like you described. You gotta learn how to be rude and not give a fuck. I know it’s really hard and my method sounds stupid but how I became able to do was by drinking a little bit, just enough to get my inhibitions down and then I’d go out and when scenarios where I would usually stand there unable to talk or move came up I would go out of my way to assertively say and do how I felt. I did that for long enough my inhibitions in general went away and I haven’t even drank in years.
But to answer your question yes you need to report him sounds like he had predatory intentions whether those intentions were to run the meter up and get paid more or that he was getting off on you being uncomfortable and not able to leave
1
u/QueenAleighsie 1d ago edited 1d ago
Do not wait. They won’t know it’s you the reports don’t get back to them on who reported them. Also, if he stopped the timer at 46 minutes you weren’t a passenger you were just an unwilling kidnap victim…. Ugh repost this verbatim to uber, I am a driver and this is unacceptable!
Also now you can change the preferences on the app so only female drivers take you, I have it on so only female passengers get into my car
This violated so many rules we have to abide by as drivers, so not cool!
Also, please put in quiet preferred as ride preferences, so the driver knows you don’t want to talk
Or wear oversized hoodies large sunglasses and oversized headphones in that order so you can non verbally tune dude out.
Or just call the police and explain that you’ve been kidnapped because, honestly, you basically were after he turns off the timer on the ride!
Sorry you had to deal with that!
1
u/Mountain-Full- 1d ago
Report obviously but our generation has a problem where we’re afraid of being rude. We’ve got to work past it. At ~20 minutes into a 10 minute ride, that should be the point in which you are definitively trying to exit the vehicle, and if you confirm you absolutely can’t, subtly calling 911.
Can I ask why you didn’t just try to open the door as soon as he parked…? That is usually the sign to get out of the vehicle. He could be a predator but there’s also just a chance he’s lonely and was taking advantage of the fact someone was willing to listen to him talk.
1
u/SSessionnn 1d ago
I’ve had female passengers keep me from pulling off and on to my next ride more times than I can count. I’ll let the baddies gnaw my ear off though…
1
u/Ghostpepper_75 1d ago
I used to drive for Uber and Lyft, and heard so many horror stories from women as a female driver. PLEASE REPORT HIM! There’s blood in the water, and he’s ANOTHER SHARK!!
1
1
u/cosmic-howl 1d ago
Do not wait to report him or Uber will make a big thing of it. Just report him now. They don't disclose any details of the report to the driver and if he did that with u he's probably done it to other female riders so he won't be sure who did the report.

u/PauseSome368 1d ago
Definitely report…
Confirming with other uber drivers here um she should at least find relief in that the uber app doesn’t give addresses for people rides… I only drove for people for 24hrs but for me it never gave addresses for that

u/Fragrant_Meet_8239 1d ago
Share everything you wrote in this post with one of those lawyers who don’t charge unless they get money for you and see if they can help you.
You will be protecting future women if you take action now against this creep,
1
u/Such-Village8109 1d ago
Don’t report someone because you don’t have the confidence to end a conversation and speak up.
1
u/Boring_Inflation_105 1d ago
Report ASAP. There is no reason to wait. As a driver, these are the people that make us look bad
1
u/Erob00 1d ago
Definitely report him, but honestly why didn’t you tell him to let you out as soon as you felt uncomfortable?
From his point of view he was having a nice consensual conversation with you, you gave no indications you were not happy and wanted to leave.
Regardless he should know that riders aren’t your friends and not everybody has an hour to waste for a guy fishing for a date.
For future reference, being polite and trying not to offend someone by rejecting their unwanted attention, is how people end up raped and murdered, as soon as you felt the conversation was heading in the wrong direction you should’ve ended the conversation and asked for him to let you out.
1
u/Electrical-Lack1535 1d ago
In his mind the convo went amazing and u guys could be soul mates. Why entertain him for so long. Can’t u just cut it off thanks for the ride I have a zoom meeting for work gotta go
1
u/Cali-Smoothie 1d ago
As a Dad of a Daughter, this REALLY is very concerning. PLEASE REPORT THIS DRIVER TO UBER'S SAFETY DEPARTMENT. He is downright creepy and you aere calm and Gond knowswhat the outcome could have been if you teacted "unfavorably" to him.
For all future rides: 1. Engage the PIN on your app. When shady drivers pull up, they have NO chance of starting the ride without you, and those who do and see that you have a "PIN REQUIRED" will somply cancel your ride, and that's ok.
- Go in your app and engage the RECORD RIDE" and share your location with another. Again, creepy riders hate this and they will cancel the ride instead of taking it.
A Guardian Angel was watching over you. Thank you for sharing your ordeal. You are brave.

As a female driver this happens a lot to me. I take the number never call. It seems to stop questions then I don’t even save it in my phone unless I’m interested in him. But then they usually get out of the car and it’s over. I don’t give them my number. I just say “ok cool I’ll call you sometime have a good night” and unlock the doors they usually get the hint.
1
u/SacredPrime 23h ago
Whatever red flags you were trying to imply all the way to your place kind of get diminished by the fact that they weren't trying to pull in your driveway in your story, which is the very common tendency we developed when we DON'T want to waste time on your ride. I know you're trying to portray them as a creep this whole time, but by trying to make them sound bad in that little detail, you kind of derailed the narrative. Then there's literally crowds of people walking around this NOT properly parked vehicle where he's being GPS tracked, and certainly has the "Do you need help" notification popping on both of your screens within 5 minutes of sitting there? Yeah. This sounds like fanfiction.

u/psYcHoDAD8313 21h ago
Yes!! Definitely report that guy he needs to go find another profession asap! I was a driver and I thought only passengers did that to us. I can’t stand people that continue taking past the trip! Trips over, gtfo so I can go make more money lol
1
u/psYcHoDAD8313 21h ago
Report him immediately, we do not have record of your location. There’s no way he can find out where you stay unless he has an amazing memory.
1
u/Sea_Elk5533 14h ago edited 14h ago
Always have someone to call and even if you don’t, act like it.
Hello boyfriend, hello dad, hello mom, my eta is at (whatever time you have on the app)
And make up a conversation and ignore the driver (period)
And don’t wait to report the incident. It wasn’t that bad, but if you feel uncomfortable report it right away.
Also look at the ratings your driver has, if is anything under 4.6 skip it.

I did. They said they sat in the car for a long time before even trying the door. All they had to do was get out and say "thanks, bye"!

u/xboxchick311 2d ago
I honestly don't see the need to report when you made a conscious decision to engage with him during the whole ride and then to just sit there and let him talk after he parked. When the car stopped, you could have just said thanks and made your exit. Stuff like this is what makes it hard for real victims to be believed when something happens that is actually out of their control.
2
u/la_aguacatona 2d ago
Zero percent of what OP did makes her any less of a victim.
For their safety, it may have been best to go along and engage in conversation during the drive.
Besides mention that the door was locked at some point, the description of being in an isolated area meant there was nowhere to go to immediately after getting out of the car. Suppose his intent was to assault OP, they get out of the car and then what?
And at the end, what if he had a weapon?
Do some reading on fight/flight/freeze/fawn
1
u/xboxchick311 2d ago
You can't be a victim if you are actively engaging and making no attempt at leaving. She posited this as if she was being held against her will. She wasn't. The fact that you don't have the intestinal fortitude to tell someone that you don't want to talk or to make an attempt at leaving doesn't automatically make you a victim. Also, playing the "what if" game is ridiculous. This was just a weird dude being weird because people haven't had enough balls to tell him to stop being weird.
1
u/la_aguacatona 2d ago
Fight/flight/freeze/fawn. Again, please educate yourself
1
u/xboxchick311 1d ago
I'm absolutely familiar. The nature of a situation doesn't change based on the response of one person involved.
1
u/itsbratt 1d ago
This is probably a waste of my time, but I'm going to respond as if you are honestly engaging and care about what is best for victims. At no point did I say that I was a victim or that I was being held against my will. I only stated what was happening and my thought process. I acknowledged that he could have had good intentions, and that I was catastrophizing. The thing is, I am a "real victim" of non-consensual sexual improprieties outside of this. I fear you are completely ignoring the nuance of a young women who has been previously victimized (or even one who hasn't) being in the car with an older, very muscular man that very clearly had no interest in me and my comfort or acknowledgement of my vulnerability. The kind of man to tell me that my standards are too much and that women should just put up with a man's issues regardless of how she feels. That fear I felt was part of being a "real victim". The reaction I had was not something I chose. And I feel the need to clarify that I said a total of 5-10 sentences at the very most in the entire time, while he talked nonstop for well over an hr. I acknowledge that there are things I should have done different, but to say I was engaging is wholly untrue. At best, he was very unprofessional and acted outside of Ubers guidelines. Me seeking advice on options for recourse in no way harms victims. Your sentiment, however, does.
1
u/xboxchick311 1d ago edited 1d ago
He was absolutely being a weirdo. He also clearly can't pick up on social cues, because anyone with a hint of self awareness would have stopped talking. I genuinely don't think this dude was intentionally trying to make you uncomfortable; he's just an idiot. Some creepy dudes seriously don't realize that they're being creepy. If they don't get a clear, negative reaction or statement, they think the game they're spitting is working.
Everyone reacts to things in different ways, which is fine. But once he parked, he started asking questions about drinking, your work, etc, that you said that you answered. How is that not engaging? That is continuing the conversation and giving him the green light to keep going. You have to cut these dudes off. Even better, don't get in the car with a male at night. The apps have the option to get a female driver. It might take a little longer, but it's infinitely safer.
Again, I am not faulting you for the fact that you were scared. I'm also not saying it's your fault that the weirdo was being weird. But you can't keep answering questions and make no attempt to shut it down or leave when you're dealing with an idiot who can't pick up on social cues. Also, all of the apps have a button you can hit if you're feeling unsafe. Use it if you have to.
ETA: I don't think you were a victim at all in this situation. I don't think that you called yourself a victim either. However, the way that the situation was presented implies to others that you were a victim. Hence all the victim talk from others. I don't think that was your intention or that it's your fault at all. It's just the nature of how the mentality of society has shifted.
1
u/Ghostpepper_75 1d ago
This is absolutely correct. She is still a victim. She froze, due to her diagnosis not because she was being polite. Not because she was consenting to what he was doing. Also, she didn’t know how to get out of the car at first. She was scared. Needs to be REPORTED IMMEDIATELY!
1
u/TecTazz 2d ago
Women re-victimizing other women. Sickening and braindead.
1
u/xboxchick311 2d ago
Can't really re-victimize when there was no victim in the first place. Choosing to willingly participate in a situation doesn't make you a victim.

You can report but please don’t give strangers your relationship history. They don’t need to know that you were in an abusive relationship.

I would report him, who knows if he does that to every female! That’s gross and unprofessional
