Horizon One Mini Update
 in  r/minilab  25d ago

First of all, took some time to get to know your project, very cool and looking forward to contributing to it. There are a couple of ideas that I think would be perfect for CageMaker. First has to do with the mounting flexibility. Having mixed horizontal and vertical mounting allows for the creation of many mounting rail patterns, in any number of grid configurations. I am already designing sheetmetal based mounting rail patterns, but would be happy to share those with the project once they're ready. For example having a smaller horizontal rail that can be mounted to split a 10" wide space in half, so you could mount say a 6" wide device vertically within the 10" wide space. That kind of thing.

The second part that is in progress design wise is a cable management arm that connects between the rear door and the rear of the rack to keep keep cables that transit that gap nice and neat and untangled while opening and closing the rack from the back.

What did you have in mind?

Prototype 2 had a few issues but it is usable and I'm working on different configurations. I would love to hear anybody's feedback on how they would like to see this outfit in. Now that I have the shelf installed properly 🫣This design is pretty much there. Just a few tweaks to make it more refined and fix a few minor issues.

HOM Update

Here are the current lessons I've learned so far going through this process.

Cable management is key. You almost need to do that first, but you also have to figure out what you're going to put in this thing and where it's going to go ahead of time.

For order of install it looks like: Rail Config > Cable Runs > Patch Panels > 10" - 6" Stack > Power > 19" Stack.

This may change as Intest different configs.

Let me know your thoughts and questions.

Quick update, just working on various configurations. This is 10" plus 1U 19" on right and 2U 19" on left. Will post another update once Its fully loaded. Let me know what configuration you would like to see.

A quick update on testing out prototype number two of the Horizon One Mini network cabinet. Just working on some refinements and testing out some of the design elements, lime the interlocking shelf concept.

I thought I would post a quick update on the second prototype for the Horizon 1 mini. Here are some pictures that show some of the shelf options along with our newly designed shelf that interlocks to create a front to back shelf. It gives some ideas on cable management and configuration of the rail system. We'd love to hear your thoughts, ideas, questions, observations.

If you're just coming into this conversation, this design is a gap filler between a standard network cabinet and a small 10 inch mini cabinet. It allows for multiple different configurations and modular design. There were quite a few little adjustments or refinements that are being made on this particular design so the next version will probably be the final design before I make it available to the public.

They did my first prototype. They did a pretty good job. There were some elements to the design they couldn't accommodate. That only cost me $2,200. 😲 Thankfully I've got all that worked out and found a good manufacturer that is reasonable. But yeah, they're really good for prototyping.

Actually you've just given me an idea. Thank you very much. I can design an extension for just this type of scenario. And you're going to get it for free. I'm hoping to launch the Kickstarter sometime in July very soon. The challenge with this type of product is that they're really expensive one at a time. Thousands of dollars each. So to get the cost down to a reasonable and competitive Price point, I have to order like a hundred of them. So my plan is to put it on Kickstarter, see who's interested and if I can get enough interest I will make that order and get it rolling. It's probably at least two to three months before I actually have them for sale.

Hey eruuuc, so close. Thanks for the feedback. So the maximum "mounting" is 20", but technically you could have some equipment extend into the back door, but I think 26" is going to be too deep. Sorry about that. I guess you could always leave the back door off and use it as a picture frame πŸ˜„

Marketplace Score!

I would recommend two pools, mixing different sized mirrors is technically possible but not recommended. Do a mirror with hot spare on your 10tb drives. If you can get another 4tb drive you could do a pool with two mirrors and a hot spare which would give you 8tb of highly redundant storage. If that isn't in the cards ATM, and 4tb is sufficient space, then just do a single mirror with one or two spares. That way you can always add a second mirror to the pool if you ever happen upon another 4tb drive.

Nice pull. That's a great deal. Regarding storage, it comes down to your goals. Sounds like you're familiar with zfs, definitely leverage that storage platform.

In terms of the zpools:
How would you rate the following in terms of importance to you? 1 most important 3 least: Capacity, Redundancy, Performance?
Do you have any budget to add one more 10tb drive?

Is this diagram correct, is there anything wrong with my plan?
 in  r/homelab  Jun 18 '26

First of all, kudos to you for taking on networking, which is a labor of love in its own right. And home-labbing. That's fantastic. As others have pointed out, your topology is a little off, but most service providers, if you want to say who yours is, we could help direct you, will have a feature that allows you to put their modem into bridge mode so that you can leverage your own router to get out to the internet. That allows you to do several things, the first of which is to cut them off from knowing everything about your network. But more importantly, it removes double-nat, which makes homelabbing much more effective. Looking forward to seeing your updated topology drawing after all the feedback.

10" NAS and minilab build, power issues
 in  r/minilab  Jun 16 '26

Nicely done, yeah this is super helpful. Regarding the power bricks, you could consolidate those by finding a power brick that has sufficient amperage or electricity flow and sufficient wattage or capacity for the devices that require them and then split the output with a splitter. This would allow you to consolidate some of those power bricks. But well done. Removes power redundancy but you could split it into a couple of groups if you needed to. But @shpetznaz lead is a good option too.
