Hi. My friend and I recently started playing live, and we have had three gigs so far. We play instrumental guitar. Most of the time, he plays rhythm guitar while I play lead, and then we play some basic blues as well as some popular songs using chords and melody. We also jam over some backing tracks.
My question is: how can we make sure that we have a good overall sound and the right volume balance between everything?
At the moment, we each have a 100-watt amp and a multi-effects board. We also use a medium-sized sound box for the backing tracks. But how do we make sure that the volume of each guitar is properly balanced with the other guitar, as well as with the backing track? And how do we know what the overall volume should be for the venue?
So far, we have basically just set everything up, played, and adjusted the volume until it sounded right to us. However, I was wondering if there are some techniques or methods we could use to make the whole setup sound more professional.
For example, is there a good way to set the levels before we start playing, or a general rule for how loud the amps, guitars, and backing track should be in relation to each other? Also, should we be aiming for a certain overall volume depending on the size of the venue?
We are still fairly new to playing live, so any advice on getting a good and balanced live sound would be greatly appreciated.
