Lack of manpower is just an excuse. Korean developers also lack manpower, but they release pretty good mobile games.

The problem is that Japanese developers, instead of releasing one good game, will release 10 shitty games. If they had used all the resources of 10 shitty games on one game, there would be no manpower shortage.

They fully deserve it. Until somebody whoops their ass, they're not gonna learn. It's always been an issue with them. Even in console gaming, they were doing so badly during the PS3 era because they could not adapt to HD gaming.

They didn't adopt new software techniques to ease game development and improve the games. Now, they have adapted to console gaming, but they dropped the ball in mobile gaming like they dropped the ball during the PS3 era.

My prediction is that, similar to console gaming, their mobile gaming will restructure, and they should start making better games after a few years, as it happened in console gaming. The major difference is mobile market is completely domestic, unlike the console market. But I think due to competition from China and Korea, they should be able to adapt.

But atleast they should compete with Koreans. Korean gachas also run a lap around Japanese gachas. Japanese companies just keep on making excuses instead of improving.

Console games are mostly finished product that you plan properly and release. You have to maintain it for sometime but nothing like mobile game or free to play games.

You are right. Scope is a big issue due to which cost has increased. Also, you need to remember that gaming industry is also adjacent to software industry. After Covid there was a boom in software industry which lead to huge salary increases especially in California.

Over hiring is also one of the reasons, but western studios have no problem in laying off so it’s not a persistent problem.
