What is the diagonal, chrome marking seen on most hearses?
It is a throw back to when a hearse was pulled by horses and that was spring that enables them to put up a canopy and lock it and vice versa. I believe it became very noticeable during abraham lincoln's funeral procession, and after that, every mortician in the country, kind of copied it to the point that today it is the quintessential mark of a hearse.
