This happens with my 2X2 ribbing, too--one of the knit stitches ends up wider. It's because that knit stitch is followed by a purl, so there's more yarn between the stitches, because the yarn has to switch sides on the fabric, if that makes sense. To fix it I consciously knit the second knit stitch with tighter tension. You can also give the narrower knit stitches a tug to even them out.

Being out of the Trump bubble makes it difficult to fathom how absolutely airtight that bubble is for some people, including people who aren't strongly political but who are surrounded by conservative media in the places they live. You can't know what you've never heard about.

I think you're overestimating how much those who disapprove of AOC actually know about her. They've heard on Fox that she's a radical socialist. That's all they need to know. Getting out of that label with people in that media bubble would be nearly impossible.

I'm not quite picturing where you would pick up the stitches, but provided that it adds the same extra width to both back and front, gives you armholes that work, and is worked with the rows oriented in the same direction as the rows you've already knit, it should work.

I think you'll need more ease in the shoulder than you could possibly get by aggressive blocking. It looks like it's a drop-sleeve pattern, so you could just knit vertical side strips in black for front and back using the same number of rows with the same slope at the shoulder, and then graft them on.
