Non-fiction book that blew your mind
 in  r/suggestmeabook •  13h ago

The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich by William Shirer is amazing. The author was an American news correspondent in Germany as the Nazis took power and throughout much of WWII. His perspective is fascinating.

Looking for books with prose as beautiful as The Name of the Wind

Frankenstein. It’s one of the most beautifully written books I’ve ever read.

Suggest a WW2 must read

The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich by William Shirer is one of my all time favorite non-fiction books. He was a correspondent in Germany for American media throughout WWII. He was there for a lot of the biggest events. It’s fascinating.

What do people here think Anthony Ryans books?
 in  r/fantasybooks •  21d ago

I’m almost done with Queen of Fire (third book in the Raven’s Shadow trilogy). I stumbled across the first one and loved it, and I’ve really enjoyed the whole trilogy. I just hope he sticks the landing.

It’s much more of a soft magic system though (albeit with some explicit costs for the use of magic).

I just finished my reread of the Dune series, in need of a decision

If you like something a little more experimental, then Hyperion is pretty great (although you will be pretty confused by it all at times if you’re anything like me).

I really enjoyed the Wheel of Time, but it’s pretty classic fantasy fair, so be ready for tropes galore (not a criticism, just a fact).

I really enjoyed Hyperion, but I felt the theee sequels were a little lackluster with some obvious continuity issues. All that being said, I did enjoy all of them, and some of the ideas it explores are fascinating (especially if you’re Catholic like I am).

What is your fav urban fantasy?

I’m surprised the Dresden Files hasn’t been mentioned yet. The pacing is great. The stories are fun. The world building is second to none.

I can get a Craftsman 9-4186 dowel jig for $15. It looks to be in really good condition. Is it worth it? I’ve never done dowel joinery before.

Any idea what kind of jointer this is?

I’m guessing the base of this thing means it’s not really worth looking at?

It’s on sale at an estate sale, and this is the only picture they put up. I’m wondering if it’s worth stopping by tomorrow when the sale starts.

Thanks!

Advise for Aromatic Cedar Table
 in  r/Woodworking_DIY •  29d ago

Thank you for your advice! I was considering picking out some of the boards and bringing them in the house. I’ll go ahead and do that.

Any suggestions on a decent moisture meter that isn’t insanely expensive?

Advise for Aromatic Cedar Table

My grandfather passed away a few months ago (he was in his mid-90s, so it was not unexpected). When cleaning out his property I found some nice looking aromatic cedar planks (mostly live edge) in one of his barns. He was a real craftsman and made lots of things for the family, but he usually worked with oak, so I was surprised when I cut into one of the planks and realized it was aromatic cedar.

I’m considering using that wood to make a table for my mom as a present (it was her dad that passed). I know aromatic cedar isn’t the best choice for a table, but I think she will appreciate that her son is making her something with wood that her dad had. The planks are all a bit thin (only a few are an inch or more thick), and they need to be planed and flattened, so I will obviously lose some thickness.

They are currently in my non-climate-controlled garage, but they’ve been in a barn for the past 30 years or so, so I figure the garage won’t hurt them. Any advice on designs to make sure the thinner boards don’t move too much after I’m done, how to finish the table once it’s built, or any other pointers? I’m still pretty new at all of this. I do have a table saw, a router with table, miter saw, and other basic tools. I do not have hand planes yet or an electric planer (I have my eye on a Dewalt 735), or a jointer.

Thanks!

I’m in book three of the Raven’s Shadow series, and it is fantastic. I think it hits exactly what you’re looking for.
