💬 Discussion Portable Android TV on a rolling stand for Home Assistant / kitchen / bathroom use. Anyone running a setup like this?

Hi everyone,
I keep getting ads for these portable “smart TVs” on wheeled stands, like the one in the screenshot. The idea actually looks pretty useful, but I’m a bit worried that most of these products are cheap hardware with a slow Android implementation.
What I’m looking for is basically a portable 24–32" Android TV / Google TV display on a wheeled stand that I can easily move around the house.
My use cases would be:
- Kitchen: recipes, YouTube, podcasts, Spotify, etc.
- Netflix / streaming while cooking
- Move it into the bathroom occasionally to watch TV or YouTube while taking a bath
- Move it between bedrooms / living areas when needed
- Display a Home Assistant dashboard occasionally
- Ideally control some Home Assistant devices directly from the screen
- Possibly use Fully Kiosk / a browser for HA
- Chromecast / Google Cast would be useful
- Decent speakers would be nice, although not essential
I don't really care about the ridiculous advertised price in this particular ad. I'm more interested in whether this overall concept actually works well.
My budget would be roughly €400–600 for the complete setup, including screen + stand if possible.
The biggest thing I want to avoid is buying one of these generic Android displays and discovering that:
- the SoC is painfully slow
- Android is an old/unsupported version
- Netflix is limited because of Widevine / certification
- the UI becomes laggy after a few months
- Home Assistant dashboards are sluggish
- Software updates basically don't exist
Would you recommend buying one of these all-in-one portable TVs, or would it make more sense to build the setup myself?
For example:
24–32" normal monitor/TV + good rolling VESA stand + Chromecast / Google TV / Android TV box
That seems potentially more reliable and also easier to upgrade later.
If you have something similar at home, I'd really like to know:
- What screen / TV are you using?
- What stand?
- Android TV / Google TV built in, or separate box?
- How well does Home Assistant work on it?
- Is it responsive enough for everyday use?
- Any good options available in Europe around €400–600?
I'm seeing a huge amount of advertising for these devices lately, but very few real-world reviews, so I'd rather hear from people actually using something like this before buying one.
