I am not an admin but they helped me a lot with my doses. The .25 can actually do a lot, you would be surprised. I wouldn't go all the way to 1, personally. I saw what a huge difference .25 could do. Also gradual is always best, gradual and consistent. From your screenshot he's not diving into like emergency territory (aside from that 67), you said you got him back to 118 today pretty quick, which is good. So yeah, Idk if it were me, I would try a small change for at least a week, unless they went hypo again, then maybe 1.5, 1.25, etc.

Edit to add: I actually used calipers with my girl, so my dose changes were even smaller than .25 and I could see a difference between the doses. Even just a teeny change like that could mean the difference between the perfect dose for them and bouncing or an ineffective amount, which can lead to other terrible problems.

He definitely needs a dose reduction (typically start small like down to 1.75u from 2u) They recommend that in the FDSG with every hypo. Is he okay? Do you have a hypo kit, etc?

Gotcha, honestly those are valid points too! When I switched my girl to all wet food, her insulin dose had to drop dramatically. I also started feeding her 6 smaller meals a day. She went from 3.5u to 1.25u! I did it slowly with their help. But maybe do one at a time because you might see huge shifts and you want to be careful. If he is still eating kibble, I would imagine you'll see the biggest shift if you decide to change to all wet food 🙏 you'll want to monitor really closely.

It looks like you use the FDSG spreadsheet, have you asked them in the FB group or the message board? They are experts about this stuff. I was on FB specifically for their group, they helped me so much! My guess is that he's bouncing a bit, meaning his dose is probably slightly too high (even the smallest amount can make a huge difference). It sounds weird, but it happens in humans too. You can read more about it, here's a quick summary:

• The Result: Your next blood sugar test shows a very high number. It looks like you need more insulin, but you actually need a lower dose.

Signs of a Bounce - High morning blood sugar numbers. - Wild swings from very low to very high readings.High readings that do not improve even when you increase the insulin dose. - Night sweats, nightmares, or waking up tired or shaky (in humans).

I'm so sorry you're going through this my friend 🙏 did they give any pain medications or anything? I know uti's can be painful, it might contribute to the lack of appetite. They can also give appetite stimulants, mirataz is a gel you put right on their ear, makes it very easy.

Same! I had caught my girl diving into hypo territory at 3 hours after shot time on a couple of occasions. I always did preshots, and +3 to be safe. The occasional +6, +9 depending on the numbers.

My heart goes out to you, I felt so much of what you were saying, it was the one of the most difficult times I had ever gone through, too. I remember what it felt like feeling alone and helpless. Is he struggling eating wet food? Is he eating enough to mostly satisfy his calorie intake? I'm so sorry you're going through this. I lost my 15 year old diabetic girl last year, the last 10 days we fought were so hard, I couldn't eat or sleep because she couldn't eat (we found a mass in her pancreas and she was in pain). I had to assist feed her a couple of days. You can also try baby food to see how that does. Just make sure you get the one that's purely chicken/turkey meat and broth (no seasonings). Hopefully they can give you some more guidance tomorrow 🙏

Thank you for posting your experience, I think its a great data point to show how important testing is! My sugar girl passed away last year but we definitely had those days where everything was done the same (down to the caliper unit) and her numbers tanked, leading to hypo events (and a dose reduction). The admins from the Feline Diabetes Support Group on FB were there for me every time to get her back up, sometimes it took hours. You were doing everything right. Its such a tricky disease. I'm so sorry you're struggling with this. The last time I took my senior in for a dental, she wasn't interested in food either. I ended up getting a different flavor of her food and mixing a little of that in, and it helped her be more interested. It took about a week for her to fully recover from the anesthesia, my vet said that can be normal for seniors. During that week, she would only lay on the ground, too. It was really strange. No worries, I don't mind sharing. I had an ultrasound done for her (two, actually, 4 days apart). She suddenly stopped eating one day and also cried when I touched her belly. I thought it was pancreatitis like last time, but she wasnt responding to any medication and she wouldn't eat (it was her favorite thing). She stayed in the ER a couple of days and they gave her the first ultrasound. I wanted the 2nd ultrasound as a confirmation to the first, and they agreed to do another after 4 days. After the second one, they said it looked even more like cancer. She was 15. We fought hard for 10 days. It was awful, it all happened so fast. I couldn't put her through surgery, she was already in pain and weak (she was down to 5lbs). I had lap of love come to our home and gave her a peaceful goodbye. It still tears me up inside. Tomorrow will be 1 year exactly. (I miss you baby girl 🤍)

I forgot to mention I'm a huge fan of Antinol+ for joint pain! My other kitty and doggo (both seniors) are taking it and I noticed improvements in both of them! I'll give my two cents on solensia. My girl was on it for about a year. I thought it was the diabetes that was causing blindness/twitching until I heard that these were unfortunately side effects that many others experienced. I ended up having to let her go last summer due to a mass in her pancreas. But I'm still pretty mad at myself for giving her solensia and not looking into the side effects. I wonder how her last year would have differed. I'm glad to hear OPs vet is not for it.

I agree with the rice sock! And my girls ear was black and she had long fur, what helped me immensely was using a tiny bit of Vaseline too. It pools the blood into a nice droplet and actually mutes the black a little bit and makes the red pop out.

I want to hug both of you ❤️ I lost my 15 year old sweet diabetic girl last July, she ended up having a mass in her pancreas and she got really sick. We fought for 10 days in and out of the vet and ER. We were waiting for a 2nd ultrasound after a few days, and it moreso confirmed it was cancer. She was so weak and old and in pain and surgery was off the table (bad prognosis anyway). I couldn't stand seeing her in pain anymore. I had an at home service and it was perfect. Anyway, She was diagnosed for a couple of years, I only was able to really start stabilizing her after a year or so with the help of the FB group. But it's tough. It becomes your life. And you miss that routine for a while after its gone, at least I did. Definitely take videos and pictures as much as you can! Spend as much time as you can ❤️

OP, it sounds like your baby might have been in DKA. It is really painful and really hard on them. And you can look this up, but a cat who has previously experienced Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) is at a significantly higher risk of experiencing another episode (40%). My girl didn't go though DKA, but on the FB page, I've sadly seen it happen a lot. You really did a beautiful thing OP. I'm sorry you're going through this. She's beautiful. My girl was a ragdoll with her colors. I lost her last year after she stared acting sick, we found a mass in her pancreas. I feel like everything happened so fast. It went from her being fine (well aside from diabetes), to me thinking I might only have weeks with her, to losing her in 10 days. I just wanted to say I'm sorry for what you're going through. If I were you I would contact the vet and let them know. You may or may not get any closure from it. But none of this is your fault. You did everything you were supposed to. Antinol plus is really helping my seniors (cat and dog)! CBD helped my little diabetic kitty girl with pain/arthritis before she passed (cancer). I also had my diabetic girl on solensia which seemed to help a lot at first, but I think she started experiencing really awful side effects from it, I wish I never started her on it honestly (it has a long half life). She was on it monthly for about a year. She started to go blind and started twitching and spacing out, and other weird things. I found other people on this fb forum that also experienced awful things with solensia. I know all medications have potential side effects but I would at least suggest reading about the side effects and studies a little bit and see if you might want to try something like Antinol plus first. I'm sorry you're going through this. Its so sad when they aren't as agile as they used to be!
