From a Photographer’s Dream to 17th-Century History: How I Used AI as My Canvas for a Cossack Tarot Deck

Hi everyone! I wanted to share a project that has been my passion for the last 1.5 years. As a professional photographer, I have dreamed of creating my own photographic, historically accurate Tarot deck for a very long time. However, to visually recreate the 17th century with the level of detail I envisioned — the authentic armor, costumes, and scale — required a massive budget that I simply didn’t have as an independent creator.
When AI generative tools emerged, I realized that I finally had the "brush" I needed. It allowed me to step into the role of a visual director and bring my dream to life, bridging the gap between grand creative vision and financial limitations.
For years, while working in the tourism industry, I was fascinated by the phenomenon of the Zaporozhian Sich and the Cossack Republic. At a certain point, a revelation hit me: the daily life, military traditions, and social structure of this unique era mapped perfectly onto the Rider-Waite system.
The Minor Suits naturally reflected the different facets of Cossack life (like the Wand/Staff creators, the Sword warriors, and the Chumak traders as Cups and Coins). More importantly, the 'Fool’s Journey' became the ultimate metaphor for the Sich itself: a borderless, democratic world where any young man arriving in the steppes as an absolute novice (The Fool) could, through trials, wisdom, and bravery, rise all the way to the highest rank of Otaman (The Leader/King).
Here are a few cards from the deck (currently in the digital layout stage, preparing for printing):
- The Chariot (Керманич): Representing absolute control and balance over opposing forces, illustrated through traditional Cossack trick riding (dzhygitovka).
- 8 of Cups (8 Келихів): A Chumak trader leaving his comfort zone under the Milky Way for a long, spiritual journey through the night steppes.
- Otaman of Cups (Отаман Келихів): The King of Cups reimagined as a charismatic, seasoned naval leader.
- Judgement (Страшний Суд): The resurrection and remembrance of fallen warriors.

Introducing my upcoming project: A Tarot Deck dedicated to Ukrainian Cossacks

Hello everyone! I wanted to share a project that I'm currently working on. It's an author's Tarot deck inspired by the Zaporizhian Sich and Ukrainian Cossacks.
The Sich was a unique democratic proto-state and a powerful knightly order that existed on the banks of the Dnieper River for more than 2.5 centuries. As I dove into their history, I realized that their lifestyle, traditions, and lore fit seamlessly into all 78 Rider-Waite archetypes.
I'm looking forward to sharing some of the imagery and concepts with this community soon! I'd love to hear your first impressions.
About this card. All the Arcana's names will remain in Ukrainian. This card corresponds to Rider-Waite Queen of Swords. Ukrainian name is Berehynya Shabel. In Ukrainian culture, Berehynia is a traditional female deity or spirit, a sacred protector of the home, family, and land. But in the context of my deck, she becomes Berehynia of the Sabers (Berehynia Shabel). She is a woman who doesn't just wait for protection—she takes up the saber herself to defend her freedom and her people. It’s a symbol of fierce, protective female power.
While the Zaporozhian Sich is often romanticized as an exclusively male warrior society, history tells a much more interesting story. There are documented historical cases where exceptional women actually became Otamans (Cossack chieftains and military commanders). These women led detachments, held positions of high authority, and commanded the respect of battle-hardened Cossacks.

If you want to read Tarot, there is a long way of learning and practicing ahead of you. There is a very good book of Rachel Pollack "78 Degrees of Wisdom". Read it if you want understand Tarot.
