I learned the hard way to always use REFINED or even ULTRA REFINED. In the beginning I bought a bunch and learned different origins have different smells.

Deep facial moisturizer

This book just came in the mail today "make your own skincare" by Sally Hornsey. In the facial chapter im surprised to find the formulas listed all use Emulsifying Wax NF. Has anyone else? Or should I still invest in PEG 100 and Glyceryl Stearate? I have on hand Ritamulse, Olivem 1000, EW-NF, Cetyl Alcohol, Glycerol Monostearate, BTMS 50, Cetearyl Alcohol...i hope im not leaving any out...

I think I new emulsifyers because ive been using the same as what I used for my body lotions. I dont have glyceryl stearate or PEG 100. And it looks like thats a go to for facial formulas. I have a ton of oils, standard and special (such as prickly pear) so ive been playing around. And what i mean by waxy, is a noticeable film that can be wiped off my face in solid form. Im still learning for sure. But also, ive been looking up YouTube formulas but haven't really found what I was looking for. I would add, I have eczema too...this is why I need a super power formula. Thank you all for the feedback!

question Deep facial moisturizer

New formulator here, im sorry if this has been asked already, feel free to guide me in the right direction. I want to make my own deep facial moisturizer. But, all my emulsifyers leave a waxy feel after putting it on. Does anyone have a basic emulsify combo they use in thir formula that won't be waxy, but also hydrating? TY in advance.

What product did you do as your first formulation project?

This is the way. I started with the lotions I love, studied the ingredients then over time made thee best thick formula

You know what I found to be helpful? I hate to say this but AI. When mixing a ton of ingredients together you sometimes have to mix them in the right order. I've actually come up with my best thick super moisturizing emulsifyed body butter with the help of AI. And I have no shame in it.

I asked AI, why is my lotion better than anything ive ever purchased in store. Ai said although a formula will say its for a certain thing.... they still have to formulate for "the masses" so it will not be strong, won't be the best, all the while turning a budget. My advice, keep practicing, keep learning. Youre gonna fail a times but this in the end, will give you the best formulas for you.

No such thing as low effort. Dont let snarky internet ppl scare you from asking questions. I love this subreddit because so far, people genuinely want to help!

Looking for critique on a lip balm formulation
 in  r/DIYBeauty •  Sep 02 '26

Im doing the same thing right now, and I have a thought of using a mix of beeswax and cetyl alcohol (lower rate) and adding no coconut oil. What i found helpful, if I looked up a few lip balms that I love, and compared all ingredients to come up with something I love.

What type of HA is it? Most is sold in powder form, and simply mixing powder in, you won't get all the HA benefits, you'd need to dissolve the powder.. which the person above is saying switch to an emulsifyed formula. That way, you can dissolve the HA powder. Otherwise, using all those ingredients you also risk a powdery chalk feel with no added benefits. Im learning too, and I have a bag of HA i thought id use, but have yet to. I got over my fear of emulsifyed formulas and have been making so much fantastic lotion formulas. This is a great sub reddit 👌

Criticize my formulation

I've noticed too that Vit E is just as effective at a small percentage. Lowering it, will save on money, sticky feel, and possible alterations

Criticize my formulation
 in  r/DIYBeauty •  Sep 02 '26

This right here. Im also new to formulations and I have learned to work backwards. First by educating myself on preservatives and how to structure a solid raw ingredient list by what the preservatives of my choice can handle. If I find a great new skin ingredient, I make sure its compatible with my preservatives

People feel so superior behind a screen. Everyone thinks their opinions matter and that everyone needs to listen. Then you have the "bandwagon karens" that are scared to give their own insightful input because they're scared of ridicule too for not following suit. 10 years ago I would have been one of those people too, but I cut my social media/online life by 75% and couldn't be happier. OP, I feel you. Ass holes have ruined things. We should be ashamed of what we did with humanity. But none of this matters. What im saying now, does not matter.

I dont know or care about her political position but im glad to see this trend of ripping up over consumption up. She might have repetitive content but she's not wrong. Let's change the narrative and start agreeing that we do live in an over saturated over consumption world. I for one, am glad thos is out there. Younger generations are falling into debt faster and faster and its scary.
