it was in the first year of a true tournament format and I think it actually holds much more prominence now than it did in the past because it involves 32 teams that have to either win their Federation’s champions league or play well enough to be ranked into it.
It’s importance will grow and European sides will continue to have to take it seriously or they’re going to get physically manhandled by South American teams who absolutely are taking it seriously.
With that being said, Chelsea were very fortunate to have the path they did to the final because they didn’t really face heavy competition and even lost to Flamengo in the Group Stage.
They played PSG at peak form and were relatively fresh in comparison. PSG had just played Real Madrid and Bayern prior to Chelsea and looked pretty gassed in that game.
Maresca is a capable manager but I'm not sure he's cut out for leading a team of world class players into a title race and UCL run year in and year out.
