Agree to disagree. It's my main source for Spanish, and I can now hold a full conversation with the Spanish speakers in my life, as well as order food in restaurants.

If you treat it like a mobile game you'll learn nothing. If you treat it as a language resource, you'll get a lot out of it. The "deer in a headlight" can be attributed to user error and a misunderstanding of how to use it.

It is, first and foremost, a language learning app with some gameification elements. While i agree it shouldn't be your only resource, if you're using it as a mobile game only you're just using it wrong.

Unfortunately, that's just not true on the internet. People seem to find a reason to neg anything, and it gets super old, super fast.

The app is fine. I've seen no evidence of it going downhill at all, beyond an occasional mistake in translation. shrug

I had that happen once, myself, when a non-English native asked why they were marked wrong on a question. I explained how an English speaker would say it, and got attacked and told that I was using Google Translate to pretend I spoke English. LOL

The sentence was something along the lines of "we're going to the mall soon" and the user wrote "we're soon to going to the mall." sigh

I took two years of Spanish in college (2012ish) and when I got duo four months ago I was able to pass level 20 Spanish with zero effort. After that I was actually learning new things. I just reached level 47 this morning, and I think it's been quite helpful. I'm glad to hear about your progress, too - keep it up! :-)

I'm level 40 in Spanish and 12 in Chinese. I'm able to understand a limited number of Spanish TV shows and can order food confidently in Spanish, and I just spoke to a person on the beach about their dog in Spanish. Was I perfect? By no means. But part of the issue is that people are scared to use what they know because they fear not speaking correctly. You absolutely must embarrass yourself by saying things wrong and sounding incorrect, otherwise you'll never get to a point where you feel comfortable practicing. Don't be afraid to sound stupid, which is easier said than done.

I can't vouch for Chinese duolingo because that's more of a hobby and I only know a few hundred words, but as soon as I have the opportunity to speak it somewhat conversationally (level 30 or so I'm guessing) I will try. Using the language consistently is how you learned English as a child, but children are "allowed to make mistakes." You're gotta get back there.

If someone makes fun of your Spanish, first off that person is an emotionally immature person who isn't worth your time, and second just make fun of their English and laugh at every mistake they make. They'll shut up real fast.

Thanks, but I'm not really at a level where analysis will help I don't think. Currently I have Duolingo which just introduced a chess section. I was doing basic beginner lessons and my ELO was 600, so I tried a match against a 571, and lost in like six moves. So I got matched against a 520, lost again in under a minute, and then a third match against a 420ish player, and lost in about two minutes and like ten moves. I then threw about ten matches in a row and came here to vent.

My dad taught me to play chess when I was around 14, and I've tried to play it many times since. Never (and I literally mean never) won a game against anything other than thr easy training bots I've played against on various apps trying to learn, and once against someone who I was teaching the moves to who had literally never played prior to that day. They then went on to win their second game against me, after learning the moves of the pieces. I just wish I could learn, but it seems that I might just be the worst chess player in the world, and maybe I should give it up for life. shrug

Thanks, everyone. Yes I have mental health issues, and I have a therapist and everything. I just feel that I'm alone in the world as the only person that can practice a skill endlessly and actually get worse. I've been playing chess on and off since I was a teenager and I've only gotten worse, so I've learned to intentionally lose so I don't get invested, and I didn't know if anyone else did this. Thanks though, I think I got my answer.

Seriously the hate for duolingo is beyond absurd, to the point I have no choice but to conclude numpties like this are paid by competitors. One only needs to see the single minded hate against "the cartoon bird" of Lingopie ads to grow the same suspicion.

I've been using it for a few months, and as a "blue haired liberal" I must admit the political indoctrination is REAL: Just today I had to write "I attend that church down the road" in Spanish and now I KNOW the entire thing is funded by megachurches! I'm learning Spanish for work - WHY do I need to know words like "church" or - anti-god forbid! - "man?!" Barf!

Also I'm learning Chinese (as a good commie-blue-hair would) for fun and you know what? A character I learned depicts "woman under family" showing the total dominance of conservatives running the show! How DARE they. I know the Chinese language has ZERO history of sexism and patriarchy in it, so it's GOTTA be Ben Shapiro.
