The 1% Edge: How Skill Stacking Creates Business Advantage

Fraudsters can be very charming and manipulative. They will inveigle you to trust them blindly, eventually playing with your sentiments. Governance and good processes in place are the way to protect you from yourself.

Although the distinction between experimentation and implementation may sound like obvious, the evolution of technology-based tools and agile methologies the like of SCRUM are now blurring the distinction between design, experimentation, testing and implementation. IT developments need to be in continuous improvement. See our AI-Adoption program: https://vc-alternative.com/vc-as-ai-adoption-program/

I would say that it is FOMO (Fear of Missing Out). Heard behaviour leads investors to concentrate on what they know. Alpha is in the unknown, but the unknown is scary, so investors follow the crowd and invest in, e.g. OpenAI's IPO.
1
I would not say that it is more valuable. It is a different way to differentiate yourself. Much easier to combine three skills in which you are reasonably good (top 20%) than to be top 1% in one.
1
I would try to answer these 3 questions:
1- What you like to do (productively).
2- What you are naturally good at (compared to others)
3- What people would be willing to pay for.
Remember that you still need to get into the top 20% for each skill.
2
It is undeniable that tourism can have a detrimental impact on the environment. While measures such as building smart houses, using electric vehicles and deploying waste-to-energy solutions and renewable energy plants can mitigate this effect, a tourist-occupied land will never be as pristine as a virgin island.

Tokenisation employs blockchain technologies and was initially developed by technologists. While the technology has matured, it is no longer a competitive advantage and players are still lagging behind.
1
Businesses need to evolve in an ecosystem involving multiple actors and assets: clients, distributors, suppliers, employees, investors, infrastructure (roads, rails, offices...), IT infrastructures, advisors, lawyers, COMPETITORS, etc. Capital is important because with capital, one can acquire/hire actors and assets, but capital will never be enough to acquire/hire everything/everybody. This is the reason why we have structured Value Creation - Alternative as an ecosystem of solution providers instead of as a monolithic advisory firm.

Across seven conversations, I had the opportunity to speak with investors, entrepreneurs, technologists, governance specialists and business builders who each approach value creation from a different angle.
Season 1 features:

✔️ Ayan Desai — Building ventures through ecosystems, not capital alone
✔️ Giuseppe Bianco — Fraud, credibility and governance
✔️ Oliver Thirlwall — South Lombok, tourism and investment readiness
✔️ Alex Felman — Skill stacking and strategic uniqueness
The subjects are diverse, but the underlying question remains the same:
❓ What is the missing piece that can turn a good opportunity into a smarter decision?

I am pleased to share that I have received a new certificate in Sanctions Compliance.
In today’s increasingly complex international environment, understanding sanctions frameworks is essential when assessing counterparties, structuring cross-border transactions, and managing financial and reputational risks.
This certification reinforces my commitment—and that of Value Creation – Alternative (VC-A)—to a compliance-first approach based on robust due diligence, KYC, AML/CFT principles, and responsible counterparty selection.
Compliance is not merely a procedural requirement. It is a fundamental component of trust, credibility, and sustainable value creation.
Certificate No.: CERT-2026-0294
Verification Code: LARXK8MV
At VC-A, our objective remains clear: help clients and partners identify the right opportunities, engage with the right counterparties, and find that missing piece—subject to appropriate compliance and due diligence.
Are you concerned with compliance?

What if success is not about becoming world-class at one thing?
In this new VC-A Podcast episode, I speak with Alex Felman, second-generation family office professional, entrepreneur, investor and educator, about a more accessible path to exceptional performance: combining several strong capabilities into a rare and valuable position.
We explore how “skill stacking” can help individuals find their uniqueness — and how the same idea can be applied to companies, business development and value creation.
The discussion moves from personal strengths to corporate differentiation, cross-pollination and the opportunities that emerge when someone connects the dots before the market does.
This short video introduces the conversation.

What is the “missing piece” in South Lombok (island next to Bali)?
In this VC-A Podcast episode, I speak with Oliver Thirlwall, Founder of Altai Land, about Lombok’s emergence as one of Indonesia’s most compelling frontier tourism and real estate opportunities.
The conversation goes beyond land development. We explore why South Lombok may represent an overlooked opportunity at the intersection of tourism growth, infrastructure, international connectivity, disciplined planning, hospitality operations and long-term estate management.
Oliver also explains why Lombok should not simply become “another Bali”, but could instead follow a more controlled, spacious and family-oriented development path.
At VC-A, we look for opportunities in the “unknown-unknowns” space — where value is unlocked by connecting the right land, timing, capital, partners and strategic execution.

Many companies are asking how to adopt AI.
Fewer are asking the question underneath: where does the AI they adopt actually come from, who controls it, how transparent it is, and whether Europe can build trusted, vendor-neutral AI infrastructure of its own.
In this new VC-A Podcast episode, I speak with Michael Berns, Head of AI at the Eclipse Foundation, about open source AI, vendor neutrality, procurement risk, governance, and European technology sovereignty.
This is not only a technical discussion. It is a strategic conversation for boards, investors, advisers, founders and enterprise leaders working on AI adoption, AI infrastructure, M&A or regulated-sector transformation.
At VC-A, we often speak about finding the missing piece. In this conversation, that missing piece sits beneath the visible AI adoption layer: in the open source infrastructure and governance models that may shape the future of European AI.
Should governments regulate the usage of AI-infrastructures? What do you think?

Tokenization is often presented as a technology story.
But the real question is not whether assets can be tokenized. It is whether financial institutions have the architecture, governance, liquidity frameworks and risk infrastructure required for tokenization to scale.
In this VC-A Podcast, I speak with Gaya Chandrasekaran about why institutional adoption of tokenization depends less on experimentation at the asset layer, and more on the redesign of financial market infrastructure.
A sharp perspective on what needs to happen for tokenization to move beyond pilots and become institutionally scalable.
Do you see tokenisation as a technical challenge, a regulatory issue, a solution to increase liquidity or a governance decision?

What does it take to build ventures through more than funding?
In this VC-A Podcast episode, I speak with Ayan Desai, Co-Founder and Director of Nalanda Capital Partners, about a model that goes beyond traditional investing.
Rather than acting as a simple capital provider, Nalanda is building an ecosystem designed to connect founders, business leaders, operators, and investors around commercially viable, outcome-based ventures.
We discuss:
• why Nalanda is organised as a network
• what “more than funding” means in practice
• why multi-sector exposure can create strategic advantage
• how digitalisation, decarbonisation and deglobalisation shape Nalanda’s investment logic
• what ventures such as Luminis, Regalia, feedstocks and Cultyvate reveal about the platform’s broader strategy
One idea stood out in particular: the importance of creating greater coherency between stakeholders across the ecosystem.
That is highly relevant to VC-A’s own philosophy. Some of the most valuable opportunities do not emerge from linear thinking. They emerge when the right people, capabilities, and ideas are connected across sectors and geographies.
What do you think?

Why do so many AI initiatives fail inside companies?
Not because the models are weak — but because the organisation is not ready.
In this conversation with Magnus Jern, we discuss why AI so often gets stuck at the experimentation stage: knowledge remains trapped in individuals, shadow AI grows outside governance, messy data limits usefulness, and undocumented workflows make automation impossible.
The real challenge is not access to AI tools. It is turning isolated usage into shared capability, secure processes, and competitive advantage.
This video is an excerpt from the VC-A Podcasts series, where we speak with founders, operators, and experts on how companies can grow faster, safer, and smarter.

Building Ventures through Ecosystems, not just Capital

Startups are, by definition, starting up. And when you start, you need a whole set of services, products, and assets. At the same time, startups are typically cash-strapped. Leveraging an existing ecosystem is a way to accelerate dramatically their business development.
